Brickbauer, Well Known Resident, Summoned Dr. G.W. Brickbauer, 81, passed away suddenly at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at his residence, 2111 Main street, New Holstein, after suffering a cerebral hemmorhage. Born in the town of Russell on May 21, 1867, the son of George and Eva Strub Brickbauer, he attended the rural school and then the Missouri Homeopathic College of Medicine at St. Louis where he graduated cum laude in March, 1885, receiving the Materi Medica award for rating the highest scholastically in his graduating class. He was married to Amalie Sinz of the town of Russell in September, 1892, and she passed away in 1896. On July 11, 1899, he was married to Martha Gutheil of Waukesha. Dr. Brickbauer practiced medicine for 53 years, starting in Elkhart Lake in 1895. In 1910 he moved to Plymouth where he became associated with Dr. E.A. Bruns. In 1924 he moved to Sheboygan where he took over the controlling interest in the Crocker Chair co. He returned to Plymouth in 1933. He served as president of the State Bank of Plymouth from 1918 to 1936, and was a director of the Plymouth Hotel Co. In 1938 he moved to Hilbert and practiced medicine there until 1944 when he moved to New Holstein. He served as village president at Elkhart Lake for three years. Purchasing the Elkhart Lake Light and Power Co. in 1904, he extended the service of the company to Crystal Lake, St. Cloud and Glenbeulah. In 1917 he built the hydro-electric plant near Crystal Lake and later sold it to the Wisconsin Gas and Electric Co. In 1907 he built the street car service between Elkhart Lake and Plymouth. Dr. Brickbauer was instrumental in getting the Chamber of Commerce started in Plymouth and served as president for the first two years; in getting the City of Plymouth to purchase electricity instead of manufacturing it; in getting the Rocky Knoll Sanitarium near Plymouth; in starting the Plymouth Building and Loan association and serving as it's first president. He was director of the Sheboygan Chamber of Commerce in 1926 and served as president from 1927 to 1929. He served as president of the Manufacturers' association in Sheboygan in 1929, and as director of the Sheboygan Civic Music association from 1929 to 1931, and was a former member of the Kiwanis and Elk's clubs. Survivors are his wife; a daughter, Miss Marie E. Brickbauer of New Holstein; brothre Gustave of Elkhart Lake; two sisters, Mrs. E.W. Burkhardt of Menomonee Falls and Mrs. W.W. Kreuter of Wautoma. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Erbe-Hoffmann Funeral home in New Holstein with the Rev. J.R. Seidler of St. John's Evangelical and Reformed church officiating. She had been hospitalized there for the past four weeks with a broken hip. She was born in Kiel, October 16, 1865, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Gutheil. She was born Dec. 23, 1906, at Elkhart Lake, a daughter of George W. and Martha Gutheil Brickbauer. She attended Plymouth schols and was valedict- orian of her high school graduating class at Plymouth in 1923. She attended Lawrence College and was a member of the PHSMU Sorority and the Athena Literary Society. The family operated the Curtiss Hotel in Plymouth from 1933 to 1939 and then moved to Hilbert, where Miss Brickbauer assisted her father in his medical practice until 1948. She was later employed as a society Reporter, retiring after 30 years. Survivors are several cousins. The cremains will be interred at St. John Cemetery, Elkhart Lake.
