B. Burkhardt Laid to Rest Miss Bertha Burkhardt, aged 77, a lifelong resident of Manitowoc county, passed away Thursday at her home at 926 6th st., this city. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock at the Meiselwitz Funeral home, with Rev. E.L. Worthman officiating. Burial was made in the Rockville cemetery. Miss Burkhardt was born Dec. 20, 1870, the daughter of Matthias and Elizabeth Burkhardt, on the Burkhardt homestead north of Kiel. After the death of her sister, Mrs. William Meiselwitz, Miss Burkhardt dedicated herself to the care of that family, consisting of her brother- in-law and his three daughters: Miss Gertrude Meiselwitz, now of Maryville, Tenn., Mrs. R.J. (Elvera) Mullen of Clinton, Miss., and Mrs. H.J. (Bernice) Schwegler of Cincinnati, Ohio. Miss Burkhardt is survived by two sisters, Ida Burkhardt, and Mrs. Edgar Schunk, and two brothers, Gottlieb and Henry. A brother Willie, and sister Clara (Mrs. William Meiselwitz) preceded her in death. Pallbearers were John Burmahln, Frank Jobat, Albert Maurer, Alfred Feile, Raymond Menne, and William Buchholz. ************ From death record: Death of Bertha Burkhardt (single). She enjoyed good health and was able to be up and around until about a week before she passed away, death being due to the infirmities of old age. Deceased, nee Feile, was born August 15, 1839, in Rothenacker, Wuerttemburg, Germany. She came to America in 1854 with her parents, who settled near Milwaukee. Four years later the family came to the town of Schleswig, where she was married in 1858 to Mathias Burkhardt. This union was blessed with eleven children, of which four passed away in their youth, and one daughter, wife of Wm. Meiselwitz, in 1906. Her husband also preceded her in death thirty years ago. The survivors are three sons and three daughters, as follows: Gottlieb, William, Henry, Anna, Bertha, and Ida, 7 grandchildren, and 3 great- grandchildren, and other relatives. She reached the advanced age of 83 years, 9 months and 3 days. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, from the late home, Rev. Wm. Rech officiating. Interment was made in the family lot in the Rockville cemetery. Marriage of Gottlieb Burkhardt and Alma Glock. Married April 28, 1888 at Reformed Church, Kiel. Gottlieb Burkhardt was born in the Town of Schleswig of Christof Burkhardt and Elizabeth Feile. Alma Glock was born in the Town of Schleswig of Adam Glock and Katherine Gerlack. ************* City's Oldest Man Dies Monday; Rites To Be Held Today Funeral, services for Gottlieb Burkhardt, Kiel’s oldest male resident, will be held this afternoon, Thursday, from St. Peter’s Evangelical and Reformed church. Mr. Burkhardt was 94 years old when he died Monday at the St. Nicholas hospital. He had been seriously ill but a short time. The services will be conducted by the Rev. E. L. Worthman and burial will be made in the Rockville cemetery. Mr. Burkhardt was born in the town of Schleswig January 17, 1862, son of the late Matthias and Elizabeth Felle Burkhardt. He attended Kid schools and on April 28, 1888, married the former Alma Glock of Millhome. The couple settled in Kiel where Mr. Burkhardt was an original stockholder in the Kiel Wooden Ware Co. He served as company treasurer and superintendent until his retirement 20 years ago: Surviving is his wife; a daughter, Mrs. John Giese of Chicago, two sons, Edgar of Milwaukee and Calvin of Elkhart, Indiana; eight grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren. Five children, four sisters and two brothers preceded him in death. She was Mrs. Gottlieb Burkhardt, aged 91. She had been living in the nursing home since 1956. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from St. Peter's United Church of Christ with the Rev. Vernon Jaberg in charge. Burial was in the Rockville cemetery. The former Alma Gerlach(should be Glock) was born May 16, 1867, in the village of Franklin, Sheboygan county, daughter of the late Adam and Catherine Gerlach(should be Glock). In her early years she moved with her parents in Millhome, Manitowoc county, where she attended the district school. She was married to Gottlieb Burkhardt April 26, 1888, at Kiel. He was one of the original stockholders and served for a time as treasurer of Kiel Wooden Ware Co. Mr. Burkhardt was also super- intendent of the plant until retiring in 1936. He died April 23, 1956. Mrs. Burkhardt was a charter member of the Frauenverein of St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed church. Four sisters and a brother preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons, Edgar of Milwaukee and Calvin of Elkhart, Indiana; and a daughter, Mrs. John Giese of Chicago. Also eight grand- children and 11 great grandchildren survive. On April 28, 1888, Gottlieb married Alma Glock.) *********** Mrs. Alma Burkhardt Funeral services for Mrs. Alma Burkhardt, 91, widow of Gottlieb, a former Kiel resident, who died on Sunday afternoon, were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peter's Ev. and Reformed Church in Kiel. The Rev. Vernon E. Jaberg, pastor, officiated. Mrs. Athniel Raquet, soloist, accompanied by Mrs. Howard Vorpahl, organist, sang, "Naher, Mein Gott, Zu Dir" and "My Faith Looks Up to Thee". Pallbearers were William Buchholz Sr., Walter Casper, Edwin Diefenthaler, Frank Drews, Alfred Feile and Henry Kattre. Burial took place in the Rockville Cemetery.
