William Burkhardt is Suicide at His Home Here on Saturday
Ill health and despondency over the death of his wife, which occurred
in the spring of this year, caused William Burkhardt, aged 69, a well-
known Kiel resident to commit suicide in hanging himself in the garage
of his home, on Saturday afternoon about 3:30 o'clock.
His lifeless body was found by Miss Frances Moritz of Kiel, a house-
keeper at the Burkhardt home. Miss Moritz, who had been gone from the
residence several hours returned at 3:30 to do her usual work. When
Mr. Burkhardt failed to return home she went to look for him and found
his body in the garage. Neighbors were called, and Dr. D.F. Nauth of
here and the Manitowoc county coroner, Gerald A. Rau, were summoned,
who pronounced it a clear case of suicide.
The deceased, who was the son of the late Mathias and Elizabeth Burkhardt,
was born on the Burkhardt homestead, two and a half miles northeast of
here on June 16, 1865. His marriage to Miss Henrietta Reichert of the
town of Rhine occurred on May 14, 1891, and the couple immediately located
in Kiel where they have always resided at 611 St. Paul street. Mr. Burkhardt
was employed in the Kiel Wooden Ware company's plant. Mrs. Burkhardt passed
away April 15, this year.
Survivors are two brothers and three sisters, as follows: Gottlieb of here,
Henry and Miss Ida and Mrs. Edgar Schunk on the Burkhardt homestead near
here, and Miss Bertha Burkhardt of near here. One sister, Mrs. William
Meiselwitz, passed away on November 13, 1907.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon from C.J. Meiselwitz
Funeral Home at 1:30 and at two o'clock, with services at the St. Peter
Reformed church, the Rev. E.L. Worthman officiating. Burial was made in
the Kiel cemetery. Fellow workmen of the deceased acted as pallbearers.
