JESSE H. CORNISH
Jesse H. Cornish 1836-1912
Lillie M. (Griswold) Cornish
Jesse Hubert Cornish enlisted in Co. E, 38th Wisconsin Volunteers, in the War of the Rebellion, and served with his regiment until he was severely wounded at Petersburg, Va., July 30, 1864. He settled at Hortonville, Wis., where he engaged in farming and lumbering while his health permitted him. He was a man of genial disposition and well beloved by all his friends, was a prominent member of the G. A. R. and an influential citizen. Severely wounded and taken prisoner on July 30, 1864 at Petersburg PA. Jesse was a Corporal. He received a medal for Valor for his service as a Union Soldier. The medal is now in the possession of Greg Cornish, his grandson. Married to Lillie M. Griswold on March 28, 1870 in Germantown, Wisconsin, in a Civil Ceremony by Charles DeWitt. Witnesses were: Charles Hale and Alice Hall. Her parents are named as: Gilbert Griswold and Julia Ann Griswold. Died Jun 12, 1912 in Hennepin County Minnesota. Buried at Lakewood Cemetery Minneapolis, MN. Age 76. Birth: 1836 Death: Jun. 12, 1912 Hennepin County Minnesota, USA ******** Mrs. Jesse Cornish is my great great grandmother. Lillie M Griswold (1851-1922). She was born in Ashtabula Co., Ohio on Sep 18, 1851 and died on May 29, 1922. She was living in Minnesota before her death so we figure she is buried there but we can not find the grave. She married Jesse Cornish on Mar 28, 1870 in Juneau Co. WI. This was a very patriotic family. Jesse's grand father Gabriel Cornish served in the Revolutionary War. From History and Genealogy of the Cornish Families in America comes, "he served during the entire war of the Revolution, took part in the battles of Saratoga and Manmouth, was an eye-witness of the execution of Major Andre, and of the surrender of Burgoyne and Cornwallis, and wintered with Washington at Valley Forge."
