DEATH CLAIMS KIEL'S MAYOR, E. GUTENKUNST Heart Attack Suffered a Week Ago Proves Fatal; Was 64 Years Old A heart attack suffered a week ago proved fatal early today in Edward Gutenkunst, mayor of the city of Kiel for the past three and one-half years. Mayor Gutenkunst, who was 64, died at his home, 412 South 5th street, Kiel, at 5:30 a.m. today. The retired druggist, who had been a leading figure in the political life of Kiel since coming there in 1902, was drafted as a candidate in 1939 and won handily. He was unopposed for re-election in April 1941 and his present term would have expired next April. Well Known Public Figure From 1902 to 1922 he operated a drugstore on Fremont street in Kiel and served as manager of the Kiel branch of the Wisconsin Telephone company during that time, handling that business from the rear of his store. He served six years as village trustee; was treasurer of the school board when preparations were made to build the new high school; was trustee of the light plant when the new plant was erected; served as president of the Chamber of Commerce in 1935; was justice of the peace for ten years; was a member of the Park board; and has been a director of the Citizens State Bank of Kiel since it was organized about 28 years ago. Arrangements for the funeral have not het been completed but the body was removed to the C.J. Meiselwitz funeral home. It is expected that there will be short services in Kiel and that the body will then be taken to Milwaukee where services will also be held and where interment will be made. Born in Milwaukee Mr. Gutenkunst was born in Milwaukee on June 12, 1878, the son of the late Jacob and Justine Gutenkunst. He received his schooling in Milwaukee and after completing high school studied pharmacy under a tutor. He then worked in a Milwaukee drug store for nine years, coming to Kiel in 1902 and purchasing the Peter Kaebel drug store. In 1922 he sold out to Stewart Lindsay and retired to private life. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. On June 9, 1903 he married Miss Sigrid Akerhielm of Chicago at Chicago. Surviving are the widow; two sisters, Mrs. Emily Dishneau and Mrs. Jennie Bartlog of Milwaukee; and a newphew, Edward Bartlog Jr., of Milwaukee. Gutenkunst, who passed away at his home at 5:30 Wednesday morning after a week's illness. Mr. Gutenkunst was born June 12, 1878 in Milwaukee, the son of Jacob and Justine Gutenkunst. In 1902 he came to Kiel and purchased the Peter Kabel drug store, which he owned until 1922, when he sold his business to Stewart Lindsay and retired. He was also manager of the Wisconsin Telephone Company during that time. On June 9, 1903 he was united in marriage with Miss Sigrid Akerhielm in Chicago. He is survived by his wife; two sisters, Mrs. A. Dishneau and Mrs. Jennie Bartlog of Milwaukee; and a nephew, Edward Bartlog, Jr. His father, mother and a brother Alex preceded him in death. Mr. Gutenkunst was elected mayor of Kiel three and one-half years ago; he has been a director of the Citizens State Bank of Kiel since January, 1923, and was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 o'clock Saturday morning at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home. The body will then be taken to Milwaukee for burial in the Forest Home cemetery.
