Anton Herzog, 80, Called at New Holstein. New Holstein. –Anton Herzog, 80, passed
away at about 7:30 p.m. on Friday at his home in New Holstein after an illness of
several months. He was born on February 20, 1863, in the town of New Holstein, the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Herzog. On January 17, 1888 he was united in marriage
with Miss Sophia Mertens at St. Ann. The couple operated a farm in town New Holstein
until about 1921. Twenty-one years ago they moved the their present home on Broadway
in New Holstein. The homestead farm is now operated by their son Oscar. The deceased
served for 22 years as a member of the town board of Town of New Holstein. He was a
member of the school board of the third district, composed of Town New Holstein; Town
Russell; Town Marshfield and Town Calumet for 20 years. His survivors are the widow
and three sons and one daughter, the children are: Hubert at home, Oscar on the
homestead farm in Town New Holstein and Peter of Town New Holstein, and Mrs. Joseph P.
Schneider of Johnsburg. Six grandchildren and three great grandchildren survive,
three sisters, Mrs. Voltine Boll of Beverly Hills, Calif.; Mrs. Frances Mertens, Town
New Holstein and Mrs. Katherina Klotz of Elkhart Lake also remain. One brother, J.J.
Herzog of Mobile, Ala., is the last survivor. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday
at the Erbe-Hoffman Funeral home in New Holstein at 9:30 a.m. and at 10 o’clock at the
Holy Rosary church. The body will lie in state at the funeral home from Sunday noon
until the time of services. The Rev. Alfred Pitzl will officiate. He will be assisted
by the Rev. Clemens Kern of St. Ann and the Rev. Henry Langenfeld of Elkhart Lake.
Burial will be made in the St. Ann cemetery.

Anton was born Feb. 20, 1863 and died Nov. 12, 1943. He is buried at St. Ann,
Calumet County. On Jan. 17, 1888, he married Sophia Mertens at St. Ann. Anton
is a son of Joseph Herzog and Theresia Turba. Sophia Mertens Herzog was born
of Casper Mertens on April 12, 1865 and baptized at St. Ann. She died April 19,
1954 and is buried at St. Ann - as is her husband Anton.

Obituary of Sophia Mertens-Herzog as follows:
Mrs. Sophia Herzog, 89, New Holstein R. 2, - died Monday evening at St. Agnes
Hospital Fond du Lac, following a lingering illness.
She was born at St. Anna, April 12, 1865, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Casper Mertens. She attended St. Ann's Parochial school and married Anton Herzog
on Jan. 17, 1888, at St. Anna.
She was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the Christian Mother's
Society, New Holstein. She is survived by two sons, Peter and Gilbert, town of
New Holstein; one daughter, Mrs. Joseph P. Schneider, Fond du Lac; six grandchildren;
16 great grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Joseph L. Voelker, St. Anna.
Mrs. Herzog and her son lived in New Holstein until December 31, 1953, when they
moved to the home of another son, Peter, of R. 1.
Her husband and two sons preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at
9:30 a. m. Friday from the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, New Holstein. Burial will
be in St. Ann's cemetery.
Friends may call at the Erbe-Hoffmann Funeral Home, New Holstein, from 7 p. m.
Wednesday until the time of services. The Rosary will be recited at the church at
8 p. m. Thursday.

Frances Herzog -is a sister to the above Anton Herzog. Anton married Sophia Mertens
and his sister Frances married John Mertens - a case of a brother and a sister
married to a brother and a sister. Both couples were married at St. Ann on the same
day - Jan. 17, 1888.
