WILHELM GERKEN (GERCKEN) The Circuit Court adjourned on Monday. The Grand Jury found a bill of indictment aginst Geo. Egloff and Gustoff Eichoff for the murder of Wilhelm Gercken. As the parties were not ready for trial, Judge Howe appointed a special term for November, when this case will be tried. A horrible and fiendish murder has been committed, but how far the accused are implicated is yet to be determined. Circumstances strongly point to them as perpetrators, but a legal investigation may develope [sic] facts substantiating their innocence, at which none would rejoice more than ourselves. ANDREW HORNICK FATAL ACCIDENT HERE THIS MORNING ANDREW HORNICK IS CRUSHED TO DEATH BY TRACTOR TODAY Crushed between the front end of a Fordson tractor and another automobile after he had cranked the tractor while it was in gear, Andrew Hornick, 1601 Ontario Avenue, an employe at the Excelsior Wrapper company, suffered fatal injuries at 7 a.m. today. Mr. Hornick was a minute or two ahead of time this morning, and when he reached the garage in which the Excelsior Warpper company cars are stored, he was alone. He want around to the front of the tractor to crank it, and the instant the engine was started, the machine plunged forward, having been in gear. It squeezed Mr. Hornick against another automobile which was parked nearby. The victim's chest was crushed as a result. A minute or two afterward, Charles Kohls, truck driver for the wrapper company, went into the garage to get his car. As he was getting ready to start his machine, he saw Mr. Hornick leaning against the front of the tractor. Assistance Too Late Immediately, Mr. Kohls sensed what had happened. Mr. Hornick was not breathing and was held fast between the tractor and automobile. Mr. Kohls tried to push the tractor back, but was unable to do so without assistance. He ran outside and asked for help. Several employes rushed to assist him, but they could not move the machine. Mr. Kohls then realized that the tractor was in gear. He threw it out of gear, after which it was an easy matter to move the tractor away from the victim. All this took only a few second. The men were all working frantically and with as much haste as possible to relieve the unfortunate man pinned between the two cars. After they had been able to free Mr. Hornick, they worked over him and restored his breathing. Chest Crushed The city ambulance was called, and the injured man was removed to St. Nicholas hospital. Two physicians were called to attend him. They did everything they could to save him, but his ribs and chest had been badly fractured and he suffered other internal injuries of such a serious nature that he could not live. His remains were taken to the Kroos funeral home. The body will be removed to the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Schneider, brother-in-law and sister of the deceased, in the town of Centerville on Saturday morning. Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Wendell Catholic church. Interment will be made in the church cemetery. Mr. Hornick was born in Marshfield on March 12, 1885. He came to Sheboygan in 1913. He was married on October 3, 1916, to Miss Albertine Schneider of St. Wendell. They have lived here ever since. They have no children. Experienced Driver Mr. Hornick was not an amateur at driving a tractor. He had been employed for about three years at the same work, and had never had an accident of any kind before. He obtained employment with the Excelsior Wrapper company on December 22, 1922. He began working inside the factory, but shortly afterward, being mechanically inclined, he was given charge of the tractor. His work was that of hauling wood from the yards to the factory. Usually, the men in the garage meet and have their morning chats before they start working, but this morning Mr. Hornick was ahead of the others, and was going to start work early. The firm blow of the tractor was a strenuous one. This was followed by a steady pressure against Mr. Hornick until the strain killed the engine of the tractor. The rear wheels spun around several seconds before the engine finally died. After the man died, Coroner Van Zanten was called and he pronounced death as being accidental and due to internal injuries. Besides his wife, Mr. Hornick is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Hornick, of Marshfield, four brothers and six sisters, none of whom live here.
