GERTRUDE KNUTH LAMP EXPLODES, CHILD LOSES LIFE MARIBEL CHILD DIES OF BURNS SHE SUFFERS Daughter of A. Knuth Loses Life In Accident At Farm Home Gertrude Knuth, 11 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Knuth, residing two miles west of Maribel, was the victim of a horrible tragedy last night when she was burned to death when her clothing caught fire from an exploding lamp in the farm home of her parents. The child died at the hospital in this city two hours after the accident after terrible suffering, having been conscious up to the time of her death. The child’s body was burned to a crisp, only small particles of flesh here and there remaining on the body when she was brought to the hospital here, and physicians said that the case was one of the most unusual in that the girl retained consciousness and survived even a short time after her burns. Father Sees Girl Afire The tragedy happened shortly before 9 o’clock last night. Mr. Knuth was at the home of a neighbor and Mrs. Knuth was preparing to retire in another room. The girl had found the gas lamp burning low and had attempted to turn up the flame when the lamp exploded, the oil and flame communicating to her body. In terror and suffering excruciating pain the child rushed from the house screaming and the flames fanned by the air, enveloped her body. Mr. Knuth, from a window of the neighbor’s home, saw the flames in the house as the furnishings started to burn and rushed toward home when he discovered his child a living torch in the yard. Before he could reach the girl, she had been fatally burned. Mrs. Kuth(sic) unaware of her daughter’s danger and seeing only the blaze in the house, worked heroically to extinguish the fire and succeeded by the time her husband carried the tortured child into the house. Dr. Kellner, who was summoned, found the child beyond hope but in a last effort to save her, rushed her to the hospital here where death occurred within a short time. Conscious To The Last The unfortunate child retained consciousness to the end and suffered greatly from her burns and death was a relief to her. She is survived by her parents, three sisters and a brother. The body was taken to the home near Maribel today and will be buried there. Manitowoc Herald News, Tuesday, April 13, 1926 P. 1 ******** Little Victim of Fire Tragedy Is Laid At Rest Funeral services for little Gertrude Knuth, little 11-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Knuth, were held from the home of the parents at 1 and from the German Lutheran church at Maribel at 1:30 Friday afternoon were largely attended, voicing the widespread sympathy of the community for the bereaved family. MARVIN LUEDTKE BURY VICTIMS MONDAY MARIBEL BOYS WHO WERE FOUND IN RIVER AFTER WEEK’S ABSENCE ARE TO BE BURIED SAME DAY Last Chapter To Happy Birthday Celebration Which Ended In Tragedy Is Written As Bodies Are Recovered Friday Afternoon Desire to continue a birthday celebration that continued at Polifka’s Corners last Saturday night, to this city, when it appeared that the event was not to continue longer at the country place, indirectly led to the death by drowning in the river here of Leo Wanek, 21-year-old, Maribel youth, who attained his majority but three hours before the fatal plunge off the dock at the foot of South Ninth street here and his seventeen-year-old companion, Marvin Luedtke, also of Maribel. Recovery of the Wanek car at the river bottom at the bow of the steamer White Swan, at the dead end of South Ninth street, with Wanek’s body behind the wheel, shortly after 4 o’clock Friday afternoon was followed an hour later by the hooking of the clothing of the Luedtke boy, who had evidently gone through the top of the car. The recovery of the two bodies ended a search for a week that has been under way by the parents, and county authorities, started Monday morning when the pair failed to return to the homes of their parents, residing on a rural route out of Maribel. And the two youths will be buried in cemeteries near Maribel on the same day, next Monday. Wanek will be buried from Kellnersville at 10 in the morning. The funeral of Martin Luedtke will be in the afternoon at Maribel. Come Here Together Pieced together, the information gained from the parents of the young men and from their companions disclosed that while Luedtke and Wanek did not go to Polifka’s last Saturday night together, they came on to Manitowoc later in the evening in Wanek’s Ford coupe. Here the pair progressed to a dance in progress at Weber’s hall on Washington street, where Wanek, proud in the possession of a new $40 accordion, sat in with the orchestra there and played for the dance until it broke up at three Sunday morning. It was then that the pair started on their fatal ride. The recovery of the bodies of the two young men in the river here was a shock to the parents of both. They figured that the boys had gone off on a trip and would be heard from most any time. But the fact that there was only about $3 or $4 between them in actual cash caused apprehension of something serious having happened to them as the days went on with no word. Find First Clues First definite clue that the car and the bodies came when Policeman Chas. Novak and Deputies Anton and James Novy from the sheriff’s office, struck an object in the river bottom at the foot of South Ninth street shortly before two yesterday afternoon. Novy, working about the object with a pike pole, brought up a bit of stuffing or padding usually found in the top of a coupe. This resulted in Sheriff Carstens ordering up the big derrick scow of the Antonsen Co. from the foot of South Sixth street. By this time the news had spread throughout the city and it was estimated that when the scow in tow of the gasoline tug reached the scene shortly after three o’clock, there was a crowd of 1,000 people lining the docks on both sides of the river and seeking vantage points on the White Swan and other craft in the vicinity. The hooks were dropped into the river near the dock and soon hooked the car. It was raised to the surface but the hooks failed to hold and it dropped back to the bottom. But enough was seen to make certain that it was the Wanek coupe. Only One Body In Car In the next try the hooks held and soon extra chains were fastened to the car through the upper frames, as all the windows in the coupe were broken. As the car was raised to the surface again, wheels first, the body of Wanek was in the car, slumped over the steering wheel. But Luedtke was missing. The body was taken from the car and placed on the dock and then the car raised higher and swung over on the large derrick scow. The scow was moved out a bit from the dock and drags secured to search for the Luedtke body. Shortly before five o’clock, Policeman Novak with his drag caught the trouser leg of the Luedtke lad, and pulled him to the surface. And not until then did the crowd move away from the scene. Neither body was badly bloated or marked up in any way. Reconstruct Last Ride Authorities today were able to reconstruct the story of just what took place. Last Saturday night was the coldest of the present winter. The thermometer dropped to 13 below zero. During the hours that the Wanek coupe was parked near the Weber parlors on Washington street, it is presumed that all the windows frosted up badly. Wanek and Luedtke, starting on their return journey, went east on Washington street to go over Eighth street bridge, and misjudged the distance, turning south on Ninth street in the belief that they were on Eighth street. At the dead end of the street, there is a warning light near the North Western spur track, a street light near the water’s edge with a big white and black striped “Stop” warning board. In addition, the bow of the steamer White Swan, moored at the Oriental dock for the winter, sticks out to beyond the middle of the __. Wanek, it is figured, was coming along at a good speed with the windshield badly frosted when the big stop sign loomed in front of him. He probably swung the wheel sharply to the left to avoid striking the sign and the car swept over the dock, clearing the nose of the White Swan, and a large steel mooring chain, and plunged into the river, overturning as it did so, and landing on the bottom, wheels up. Wanek probably died behind the wheel. Whether Luedtke broke free through the top of the coupe after it struck the water is not known. His body may have worked free from the coupe days after the fatal crash. With the bodies recovered and turned over to undertakers, the work of the rescuers was over. The scow was taken back down the river and the Wanek coupe was placed on the dock and later removed to the Huppert garage. Wanek’s Father Here Frank Wanek of Maribel accompanied by friends was in the city yesterday, and two hours before the discovery of the car and the bodies, was in the Herald-News office, expressing the word that some hope from his son and Luedtke would be heard. The parents of the Luedtke boy at Maribel were notified at once of the finding of the body of their son. The two young men are members of youths in the vicinity of Maribel who have been in the habit of meeting often. It was such a gathering that was arranged for last Saturday night, with Wanek the principal figure by reason of the fact that Sunday was his twenty-first birthday. When the birthday festivities at Polifka’s Corners did not turn out as expected, a shift to Manitowoc was decided on. Wanek, an only son, had for years been a musician and played the accordion. Only a few weeks ago his parents presented him with a new instrument. He took it with him last Saturday night to aid in the birthday festivities. And so when he and Luedtke reached the dance here, he took his accordion into the hall and joined in with the orchestra playing there until the “good night” waltz was played. Complete Funeral Arrangements The body of Marvin Luedtke was taken to the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei Funeral parlors. It will be removed to the home on route 1, Maribel, Sunday, where it may be viewed up to the time of the funeral. The youth was seventeen years of age, and after completing the grade school, worked with his father on the farm. Besides the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Luedtke, four brothers, Ervin of this city, Raymond and Leroy at Green Bay, and Clarence at home, and one sister, Elfrieda, at home, survive. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at one o’clock from the home and at two o’clock from the St. John’s Lutheran church in Maribel. Mrs. Luedtke has been an invalid for years and a shock from her son’s death is feared. The remains of Leo Wanek were removed to the Emil Husar undertaking parlors at Kellnersville and will be taken to the home tomorrow. The parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wanek, are the sole survivors. Funeral services will be held at 10 o’clock Monday morning from the St. Joseph church at Kellnersville. Recovery of the two bodies late yesterday afternoon relieved the strain that the parents and friends of the young men have been under the past several days. Even this morning there was a throng of the idle curious gathered at the dock at the foot of South Ninth street where the Wanek car made the fatal plunge in the early morning hours of last Sunday’s 13-below-zero weather. ALFRED AND MARY PAUTZ MARIBEL COUPLE FOUND DEAD IN CAR OVERCOME BY MONOXIDE GAS, LOCKED IN CAR Sad Fate Overtakes Alfred Pautz and Bride of Few Months Sunday Deadly carbon monoxide is believed to have been responsible for the tragedy which early Sunday morning snuffed out the lives of Alfred Pautz and his wife Mayme, bridal pair of six months who were found dead in their Ford coupe on a road near West Kewaunee, Kewaunee county. The couple resided near Maribel, this county, where they are well known. A double funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon from the home of William Pautz rural route one of Denmark, where the bodies of the two victims were taken yesterday after Kewaunee county authorities had decided that no inquest was necessary and that death was due to gas poisoning. The funeral services will be held from the Maribel church, the Rev. Kloska officiating. Car Stalled, Death. Mr. and Mrs. Pautz who since their marriage on June 25 last year had made their home with the husband’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Pautz near the Manitowoc county line, left there a week ago to visit with Mrs. Pautz’s mother, Mrs. F. Vlasck in Kewaunee county. Last Saturday the couple decided to go to Krok for a visit with an aunt there and it was while enroute there that the tragedy overtook them. The automobile, with lights on and the engine running, was discovered on the highway off the main road, near the farm of August Karl, six miles from Kewaunee, Sunday morning. Investigation revealed the presence in the car of two persons, both apparently asleep or dead and when efforts to open the door of the machine failed a call was dispatched to the authorities at Kewaunee. The district attorney and sheriff, arriving 35 minutes later, broke the glass in the door of the car and it was found that Pautz and his wife were dead, although apparently death had resulted but a short time previously. Every effort to revive the two failed and the bodies were removed to the Karl home and later taken to the Pautz home near Maribel. In Snow All Night. Mr. Karl near whose farm the car was found, said that he had heard the engine of the machine running late Saturday night and that lights were burning on the car. Later near midnight, when he was again out doors, he saw the car on the road but the engine was quiet and no lights were burning and he thought the machine becoming stalled, had been left by its owner until morning. In the early morning, however when sons of Mr. Karl left the house they heard the engine of the car and stated that the lights were burning. When the machine did not leave the spot where it was discovered, the Karls made their way to the scene to investigate and it was then that the discovery of the plight of the unfortunate occupants was learned. When an effort was made to open the door of the car, it was found that the handle had been broken off and the other door was locked from the inside. No response to their repeated rappings and calls being received, it was decided to notify the authorities at Kewaunee and upon their arrival the death of the two in the automobile was established. Theory of Officers. It is the theory of the officers that Pautz and his wife became stalled on the road late Saturday night, and that when Pautz found it impossible to proceed the couple had decided to remain in the car for the night and attempt to continue their journey in the morning. The fact that death had ensued but a short time before the bodies were found supports the belief that after spending the night in the coupe, Pautz had succeeded in starting the car but the two had been overcome by monoxide poisoning while endeavoring to get the automobile going. Near Destination at Time. Mr. and Mrs. Pautz were within a mile and one half of their destination, the home of the aunt at Krok, when their car stalled. The location is a side road off the main highway near West Kewaunee and about six miles from the city of Kewaunee. The Kewaunee county district attorney said today that there was no explanation of the double tragedy except that of poisoning from carbon monoxide. Pautz 21, Wife 19. Pautz, a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Pautz, was 21 years of age while his wife, who previous to her marriage was Mayme Melera, of Carlton, was 19, having reached this age on February 4, this year. Pautz is survived by his parents and two brothers, Aaron and Edward, both at home while Mrs. Pautz leaves her mother, Mrs. Vlasek of Ellsville and three sisters, Mrs. Wesley, Manitowoc, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Martin, residents of Kewaunee county. The funeral at Maribel tomorrow will be a double one with the bodies of the two laid side by side in the same grave. The tragedy has cast a pall over the section where the young couple were well known and popular. Manitowoc Herald News, Tuesday, February 28, 1928, Page 2
