JACOB ANDRES FATALLY HURT, HE DRIVES HOME Reifs Farmer With Bursted Artery, Reaches Home After Fatal Accident With a bursted artery from which he vainly strove to stop the ebb of his life's blood, three broken ribs and internal injuries, all of which he received in an accident when he was thrown from his rig onto a stone pile in the road, Jacob Endress, a Reif's Mills farmer made a gallant effort for his life and succeeded in getting into the wagon, from which he was thrown and drove to his home a distance of a mile from the scene of his fatal injury on Wednesday night only to succumb after several hours of terrible suffering. Endress reached home a little after nine o'clock and died at 2 am never regaining consciousness after being carried into the house. Endress was returning to his home from Branch were he had been on business during the day and met with the accident that late culminated in his death, at a point a mile from his home. At that place there is a broken culvert in the road which had been partly repaired by throwing in a big pile of stones. The spot is a bad one and has been shunned by the farmers thereabout because of the danger from accident. The night was pitch black and it was thought that the farmer was not conscious of his proximity to the broken culvert until the wagon gave a lurch throwing him out in a violent way. How he managed to control the team which was spirited, regain his seat and drive to home is a matter of mystery. First intimation that his family had of the accident was when the injured man's feeble cries were heard from the house and he was discovered helpless in the wagon covered with blood from a wound that severed an artery and which primarily caused his demise. A physician arrived when hastily called, but the loss of blood had been too great and death ensued. The decedent leaves a widow and family of six children, one of whom, Mrs. J. Augustine, lives in this city. His father-in-law, J. Nicholai, South Eleventh Street, also resides here as does a cousin, Jac. Wickert. Manitowoc Daily Herald - Apr. 4, 1907 - page 1 ******** A FATAL ACCIDENT, Jacob Endries (sic), a well-known, prosperous farmer, aged fifty-five, died at 2 o'clock a.m. last Thursday at his home, three miles north of Branch, from injuries he had suffered in an accident with which he had met six hours before his death. Mr. Endries had been in Manitowoc Wednesday afternoon, April 3. He started to drive home early in the evening. On arriving at Branch he made a short stop. At about 8 o'clock he resumed his homeward drive. The night was quite dark. He was alone. When he was a mile and a half north of Branch, one of the front wheels of his wagon suddenly dropped into a deep rut at a place where the road had been in a bad condition for some time. The sudden and violent force with which one side of the front of the wagon descended caused Mr. Endries to be thrown out of the wagon with great force. He was thrown upon a pile of stones in the road and he thereby had three ribs fractured and a large artery ruptured, so that he bled profusely. He also sustained other internal injuries. However, he was not rendered unconscious. With great efforts he managed to get into the wagon again, and to get his spirited team of horses under control. He then proceeded to drive home, ai distance of a mil and a half from the scene of the accident. He arrived home at about 9 o'clock. He was then almost unconscious from the loss of blood he had suffered. His faint moaning attracted members of his family, who carried him into the house, and then hurriedly summoned Dr. Guttman of Kellersville. On examining the injured man, the doctor found that three ribs were broken, that an artery had bursted and that other serious internal injuries had been sustained by the unfortunate man, who was then hovering at the verge of dissolution and suffered untold agony. After lingering for about five hours, Mr. Endries expired, while the doctor was in the act of reducing the fractures. Mr. Jacob Endries is survived by a wife and six children. One daughter, Mrs. J. Augustine, resides in this city. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the home. A large concourse of friends of the decedent attended the obsequies. Mr. Jacob Endries' terrible and untimely death will be sorrowed for by many people. He was held in high esteem by all who knew him. Manitowoc Pilot, April 11, 1907 ******** A terrible accident, which ended in death, happened Wednesday evening last week involving farmer Jacob Endress who lives near Reifs Mill. He was in Manitowoc on Wednesday on business and started for home that evening, stopping in Branch to handle other affairs. When finished he started toward home, and as he was going along the pitch-black road he reached a point about a mile from the Endress farm where part of the passage had recently been repaired. He was unaware that it was still dangerous and one of the front wheels dropped into a hole throwing Endress from his seat onto the rocks. He tore an artery, broke several ribs and suffered internal injuries from the fall. He was able to stop his horse, get back on the wagon and continue on, arriving at his farm more dead than alive from the loss of blood. He was taken into the house, a doctor was called, but there was little that could be done. He died of his injuries several hours later. Jacob Endress leaves a widow and 6 children. BALDWIN FOGELTANZ AUTOPSY HELD TO DETERMINE CAUSE OF DEATH Whitelaw Youth Dies following Injury To Determine the cause of death of Baldwin Fogeltanz, 20 years old Whitelaw youth whose demise occurred at the hospital here on Saturday afternoon, following an injury he suffered while working with a threshing crew, physicians, at the request of relatives, conducted an autopsy on the body Sunday at the Urbanek & Wattawa morgue. The autopsy established that Fogeltanz had died from concussion of the brain, due to the accident of which he was a victim ten days ago. Drs Gleason of this city and Nauth of Kiel, performed the examination and Drs Farrel, Two Rivers, Meany, this city and Guttman of Cooperstown witnessed the autopsy. Official record of the autopsy will be used in connection with the claim for damages for the death of Fogeltanz to be filed under the Wisconsin compensation law, it is understood. Accident Ten Days ago Fogeltanz, who was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Fogeltanz, residing on rural route 1 at Whitelaw, was injured ten days ago while employed with a threshing crew at work on the farm of Jacob Naidl, near Whitelaw. The youth was engaged in work upon the belt of a clover huller when he was caught in the belt and thrown to the floor of the barn, sustaining the fracture of the skull. He was removed to his home in unconscious state but was not thought to have been seriously injured until later when he failed to recover his senses and on Saturday he was brought to the hospital in this city, his condition showing some improvement during the day when he regained consciousness but was unable to talk. Death occured at 5 o'clock the same day. Decide on Autopsy After the body of the dead youth had been removed to the undertaking rooms and prepared for burial, decision to conduct the autopsy was reached by relatives and arrangements were made. Fogeltanz had been employed with the threshing crew for some time, being onf of eight or nine men engaged with the crew, whose operators are required by state law to cover by compensation insurance. MARY ANN FREIDENBERGER MOTHER DIES, 9 HURT AS AUTO OVERTURNS Seven Children Spill Out of Car Near Whitelaw Mrs. Freidenberger Is Victim; Others Not Seriously Hurt An automobile containing two women and eight children went out of control and overturned on a town road about 1-1/4 miles north of this village shortly before 2:45 p.m. Wednesday. Mrs. Charles Freidenbeger, 29, of Rt. 1, Whitelaw, the driver, was killed. An expectant mother, she leaves behind eight children who were at home at the time of the accident. Hospitalized with injuries were her sister-in-law, Mrs. Raymond Polifka, 32, Mounted Rt. 18, Memorial Drive, and the latter’s 8 children. They included (private). Mrs. Polifka, who is expecting another baby, suffered several facial injuries but was not believed critically hurt. Her daughter, (private), had undetermined back injuries. The other Polifka children were treated for head injuries and cuts and bruises to the body… County traffic police reported that the two sisters-in-law and the Polifka children were traveling north in a 1953 model Buick two door sedan when it went out of control. The vehicle left the gravel road on the east side and ran into the ditch, then swerved back on the roadway and overturned near the top of the hill, throwing out all the occupants except (private), police said. After landing back on its wheels, the car continued driverless and under power to the south for about 290 feet where it came to a rest against an embankment on the east side. Bunched Together (private) was found on the floor in the back of the car. The others, including the dead woman, were bunched in a small area on the roadway near the point where the vehicle overturned. The car apparently rolled over Mrs. Freidenberger’s head. Police were investigating the possibility that the accident may have been due to a mechanical defect. An inspection of the car after the accident showed that the upper accelerator arm was disconnected and that the left rear shock linkage was unhooked. A passerby told investigating officers that the motor was running at half throttle and the power wheels were still spinning after the car came to a stop against the embankment. There was no indication that the car was traveling at an excessive speed. Jack Braun, who operates a farm in the area, said (Continued on Page 2-M) (Continued from Page 1) that he saw the vehicle traveling in a normal manner at about 30 miles an hour shortly before the accident. Dust Cloud Attracts Him He was attracted to the accident scene by a big cloud of dust kicked up from the gravel road by the Freidenberger car. Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner, said Thursday that he had not definitely decided whether an inquest would be held into the accident. Final decision will rest, he said upon an investigation into the activities of the women earlier in the day. The women and children apparently were enroute to the Freidenberger residence which is located about a mile to the north and west of the accident scene. The former Mary Ann Polifka was born Feb. 1, 1931, in the Town of Franklin, the daughter of Frank and Anita Warner Polifka. She attended Riverside school at Taus and April 39 (sic), 1949, was mar-Jr. (sic) at Francis Creek. They settled in the town of Franklin where they lived until the present time. Survivors include her husband, three sons, at home; five daughters, at home; sister; three brothers (names omitted for privacy); paternal grandmother, Mrs. Anna Polifka of Rt. 1, Whitelaw; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Freidenberger, Sr., of Rt. 1, Whitelaw; and 16 nephews and nieces. Funeral services for Mrs. Freidenberger will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Saur Funeral Home, Kellnersville, and at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Riefs (sic) Mills. The Rev. John Haen will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home where the Rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m. Manitowoc Herald Times, Thursday, July 7, 1960 P. 1 ******** Advance Cause For Accident Fatal to Woman An automobile accident Wednesday afternoon which killed one person and injured nine others was “probably due to the inexperience of the driver,” County Traffic Police Chief Henry L. Pleuss said Friday. Mrs. Charles Freidenberger, 29, of Rt. 1, Whitelaw was killed when the two door sedan she was driving went out of control and overturned on a town road hill about 1-1/4 miles north of the Village of Whitelaw. Her sister-in-law, Mrs. Raymond Polifka, 32, Mounted Road 18, Memorial Drive, and eight Polifka children, ranging in age from eight years old to nine months were hospitalized with injuries received in the accident. Close to Road Edge From questioning one of the older Polifka children, it was learned that Mrs. Freidenberger was driving close to the edge of the road. Pleuss and members of his department theorized that the car may have gotten into the ditch and caused Mrs. Freidenberger to become excited with the result that she gunned the motor. The car then jumped back into the road and overturned at the top of the hill, throwing out all but one of the occupants. After regaining its wheels, the vehicle proceeded downhill about 290 feet driverless and under power before coming to a stop against an embankment. Lending credence to the police version was the statement of a passing motorist who said the motor was running at half throttle and the power wheels were still spinning after the car came to a stop against the embankment. No Driver’s License Pleuss said Mrs. Freidenberger had no driver’s license and apparently did not have much driving experience. She had been warned earlier by her husband not to drive, Pleuss added. Mrs. Polifka was a licensed driver. Further investigation disclosed that the Freidenberger and Polifka families had met at Branch before the accident. The two husbands left in Polifka’s car to go to Clark Mills to help a relative with hay baling. The two women and the Polifka children were going to the Freidenberger home to pick up the eight Freidenberger youngsters when the accident occurred about a mile southeast of the residence. The women and children had intended to go to the Clark Mills farm where their husbands were to work. Manitowoc Herald Times, Friday, July 8, 1960 p. 15

ELLEN HUSSEY RESIDENT OF COUNTY FOR 70 YEARS, DEAD Mrs. Ellen Hussey, one of the oldest residents of Manitowoc county, who for more than seventy years had made her home here, is dead at the home of her son, Jerre Hussey, at Cato. Mrs. Hussey was past 92 years of age but, despite her advanced years, she retained her faculties and took a keen interest in affairs. Since the death of her husband, eleven years ago, she had made her home with her children. Mrs. Hussey was born in Ireland and came to America in youth. She celebrated her 92nd birthday December 4 last year. She was the mother of John Hussey, who, more than forty years ago was principal of the Third Ward school here. Three sons, Jerre of Cato, Michael of Waukegan and James of Milwaukee, and two daughters, Mrs. Julia Regan of Denver and Mrs. Michael Fitzgerald of Cato, survive. The funeral will be held tomorrow with services at the Whitelaw Catholic church. Manitowoc Herald News, Wednesday, August 10, 1921 P.1 ******** Notes from Cato Mrs. Michael Hussey died at the home of her son, Jerry Hussey, in the Town of Franklin, Tuesday afternoon, August 9. Mrs. Hussey had made her home with her son, Jerry, her husband having dies some years ago. Mrs. Hussey was the mother of ten children, five of whom survive being Michael of Waukegan, James of Milwaukee, Mrs. J. Regan of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Michael Fitzgerald of Cato and Jerry, living on the homestead farm of Franklin. Mrs. Hussey was 94 years of age, being one of the oldest resident of the county. Born in County Claire, Ireland, Mrs. Hussey came to this county when it was but a wilderness. No doubt she suffered the privations and wants that was the lot of all the pioneers coming to this country at that time, but no one knowing her can say they ever heard her complain of the many difficulties and sacrifices that necessarily made up her life. Hers was not a complaining nature. The sorrows of her life were hidden from her friends and those that knew her not have lost the opportunity of knowing a friend whose generous helpful nature, it is impossible to over estimate. Because of her wonderful vitality and the clearness of her mind it seemed to her many friends and relatives that her lease of life would never end although 94 years of age. We all feel we have lost a youthful friend. Her many years did not age her and her gentle womanly disposition was a gift the attainment of which it took years to develop. Her life was one of devotion and love to her family and friends, a goal, the attainment of which very few of us reach. It has been said the Lord has set amongst us a few ideal characters to be our guide and inspiration and we can surely say that she was one. Let us hope that His judgment of her may not be severe and that her many acts of kindness and sacrifices have been rewarded. The funeral will be held Thursday morning from the Catholic Church at Reifs. Peace to her soul. Manitowoc Pilot - Thurs., Aug. 11, 1921

FRANCIS HUSSEY The Hussey family has again been stricken with affliction. Last week, Frank, a younger brother of John A. Hussey, died. In May last, he suffered from a diseased leg to such an extent that it was found necessary to amputate the troubled limb. The operation was performed in a Chicago hospital. A few weeks ago, the patient was brought to his home in this county, but it was evident that his days were numbered. Blood poisoning had set in and the life current was no longer strong and healthy. He died last week, and was buried by the side of his sister, who had preceded him. He was a young man, but twenty five years of age, and during his life time, enjoyed the respect and warm friendship of all who knew him. KATHLEEN JUNK Headon Crash Kills Rural Cato Girl, 21 (photo) Kathleen Junk Victim, Fiance One of Drivers Gerald Grall, Other Driver in Critical Condition Wedding plans for a young couple were cancelled out in death in a grinding headon collision a quarter mile east of this village on a Highway 10 curve Sunday night. Kathleen Ann Junk, 21, of Rt. 2, Cato, was killed when a car driven by her fiance, Dale A. Shamburek, 21, Whitelaw, collided with an oncoming vehicle operated by Gerald L. Grall, also 21, of 3112 Meadow Ln., Manitowoc. County traffic police said Grall was on the wrong side of the road at the time. The Junk girl suffered severe head injuries and died before an ambulance reached the scene. Grall was listed in critical condition at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, with a possible skull fracture, a deep scalp laceration and cuts and bruises to the body. Wedding Planned Schamburek was less seriously hurt with a knee laceration and face cut. Schamburek and the Junk girl were to have been married Saturday at Cato. Earlier Sunday evening they had been to Manitowoc to look for an apartment. The accident occurred about 9:45 p.m. in clear weather on Highway 10 just to the west of its junction with a town road. Police said the impact occurred partially on the shoulder of the westbound lane being traveled by Shamburek. Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner, quoted a witness as saying that Grall’s car was going east at “a terrific rate of speed.” Following the impact, Grall’s 1962 model Oldsmobile veered to the left across the ditch and came to rest on the town road. Grall was thrown out and was found lying on Highway 10. Investigating officers felt that he would have escaped serious injury if his car had been equipped with seat belts. The Schamburek vehicle, a 1954 (Continued on Page M-15) (Continued from Page 1) model Mercury veered to the south and stopped in an upright position in the eastbound traffic lane. Both Schamburek and the Junk girl were pinned in the front seat. Doctor Teitgen said Grall had had a disagreement with a girl friend from Reedsville and had dropped her off at that village prior to the accident. Earlier Grall and the girl had visited several bars in Manitowoc and Calumet counties, he declared… Miss Junk was born Feb. 5, 1941, in the Town of Manitowoc Rapids, daughter of Valarian and Mayme Shoulak Junk. She was educated at Branch school and was a 1959 graduate of Reedsville High School. She was a member of her church choir and was employed at Mirro Aluminum Co., Manitowoc. ANTON KABAT (d. 1910) PIMPLE ON ARM CAUSE OF MAN’S DEATH. Anton Kabat Picked Pimple and Poisoning Resulted from Act. DEATH CAME AFTER INTENSE SUFFERINGS A small pimple which formed upon his arm a few days ago and which he attempted to remove by picking with his finger nails caused the death of Anton Kabat a well known North Side man whose demise occurred at the family home at 430 North Tenth street at 2 o’clock this morning. death was due to blood poisoning which developed from the injury on the arm and Mr. Kabat endured several days of intense sufferings before death came to relieve him. Mr. Kabat first noticed the appearance of the pimple upon his arm on Thursday last and sought to remove it. The arm was poisoned in the wound caused by removal of the pimple and on Saturday, while at his work Mr. Kabat was taken ill and was forced to give up his work and return home. The arm became swollen to twice its natural size and the patient suffered intense agony. Physicians were summoned everything possible was done to halt the progress of the poison but it was impossible to check it and Tuesday Mr. Kabat’s condition became alarming and the family realized that he was in grave danger of death and at 2 this morning the end came. Mr. Kabat realized his danger and Tuesday afternoon made his preparations for death, summoning attorneys to prepare his will and to close up business affairs which he, because of his sudden illness, had been unable to attend to. Mr. Kabat was 37 years olf age and formerly resided with his family at Maple Grove. He removed to the city two years ago and had been employed by the Rahr Sons Company and was well and favorably known. A widow and two small children, a son and daughter, survive and his parents, three brothers and a sister also survive. The body will be taken to Reifs’ mills for burial Friday and services will be held at St. Augustine’s church. The untimely death of Mr. Kabat and the circumstances surrounding it are a shock to a host of friends who will sincerely mourn his demise. The case emphasized the danger of blood poisoning and the extreme caution which should be exercised in dealing with injuries which appear minor in nature but are too often serious and dangerous to life.
