THOMAS FITZGERALD From the Files of the Pilot – Twenty-Five Years ago - 1894 Yesterday morning Thomas Fitzgerald, his grandson, Eugene Allicot, a boy nine years of age and Louis Luethge started out with a small boat from the foot of the bluff near the water tower to do some fishing. When about half way across the river the boat, which was a cranky affair, tipped over. Fitzgerald placed his grandson on the bottom of this capsized boat and himself took a place at the stern but in the water. Luethge clung to the boat. The only person who could swim was Fitzgerald. The little boy fell off and Fitzgerald at once went to his rescue. Both were drowned. A boy named Schipper saw the accident from the shore. He at once sprang into a boat and used a piece of board for a paddle. He arrived just in time to save Luethge, but the other two had sunk. Luethge was sick with fright from this bath and went home and to bed. The chief of police was notified of the accident and with assistants proceeded to search for the bodies. That of the child was found after 11 o’clock and Fitzgerald about 3:30 in the afternoon. Fitzgerald could have saved himself but he gave his life in an attempt to save that of the child and thus made full atonement for the errors of late years. The drowning occurred only a short distance from where George ? was drowned less than a year ago. The river there is about twenty feet deep. Luethge says he was rowing and that Fitzgerald stood up to take something out of his pocket when the boat capsized. He did not see either of them after they fell in. Manitowoc Pilot - Thurs., June 26, 1919 ***** Yesterday morning Louis Luethge and Thomas Fitzgerald, along with the latter’s 8 yr. old son, went fishing on the Manitowoc River in a small boat. All went well through the city, but near Schuette’s Pier for some the reason the boat overturned. Luethge could not swim and sank, but his companion brought him back to hang onto the boat, which again rolled, dumping everyone back into the water. Again Luethge hung onto the boat and cried for help which was heard by a passing boy who pulled the boat to shore with Luethge hanging on. Meanwhile Fitzgerald and his son had disappeared. Luethge was assisted to his home and a search was begun for the others. The body of the boy was found about 12 o’clock and a few hours later the body of his father was found. FRANK FORSTER FRANK FOERSTER (sic) of this city shot himself on Thursday last. He purchased a revolver, went up stairs in his house, stood before a looking glass and sent a bullet through his mouth and another through his breast. He died instantly. The matters which led to the suicide have a pathetic side. Four of his children have died through the year of consumption. His wife is in a hospital at Chicago a victim of the same disease. His troubles caused him to take to drink. He was also distressed by poverty and despondency drew him to the taking of his own life. An inquest was held on the body.
