GEORGE J. MACFARLANE (d. 1956) George MacFarlane, Veteran Editor, Dies George J. MacFarlane, a gentle, hard-working newspaperman, died Friday afternoon at his home, 430 N. Fifth St. He had been a reporter and editorial writer for more than 55 years. He was 73 years old. Death came at 1:45 p.m. to the dean of newspapermen in this city and Wisconsin about four months after he had submitted to surgery, the first time he had ever been ill enough to require hospitalization. “Packy” as he was affectionately known to legions of friends, started as a reporter for his father at the age of 13 in 1901, the same year he was graduated from Racine High School. He took over the paper, the Manitowoc Daily News, on the death of his father in 1917. Later, when the paper was sold to the Manitowoc Herald, Mr. Mac Farlane became associated with the M and M Printing Works here for several years, although continuing to do free lance writing and reporting for the Manitowoc Herald News. Within a few years he rejoined the paper and as the Two Rivers representative reported the news solicited advertising and handled the circulation. He, however, maintained his residence in this city. Named Editor in 1940 When he was transferred back to The Herald-News editorial staff here he became sports editor and remained with the paper after its merger with the Manitowoc Times as the Manitowoc Herald-Times. He successively was ____ editor, city editor and managing editor. On the occasion of his 50th year in the field of journalism, Mr. MacFarlane was feted at a dinner Aug. 21, 1951, at which time the late H.T. Bayne, editor and publisher of The Herald-Times, presented Mr. MacFarlane with a gold watch. Although the newspaper profession was his great love, Mr. MacFarlane consented to serve four years as alderman of the Second Ward on the City Council and several years as a member of the City Safety Commission after leaving the City Council. Mr. MacFarlane had a combination of traits that made him many friends and a devotion and ability to a profession that made him unique in the journalistic field. Lively Interest in Events These were a gentle understanding of others, a lively interest in everything around him and an ability to see the humor in every situation. Mr. MacFarlane, always had been a working newspaperman. As managing editor, he kept the City Hall for his beat and covered council meetings himself until recently. The county Board was also a “beat” he considered his, and for many years he turned out reams of copy on the proceedings of the supervisors. He almost always took his lunch at his desk and when he did leave it was only to quickly snatch a bowl of soup and a light dessert. During the noon hour at the office, more frequently than not it was..(line underinked)..calls, but never did he resent the interruptions because most often a news story would result. Mr. MacFarlane could handle big stories with ease but he never snubbed the small ones, and over the years he had been in on some of the top news stories as they broke in the community and area. His favorite avocation as a news (continued on Page M-15) (Continued From Page 1) ..paperman was sports, and wherever there was a football, baseball or basketball game, Mr. MacFarlane almost without exception was present. His interest in marine activity was widespread and he chronicled events in that field with considerable enthusiasm for the many years he worked with a typewriter. Was Lover of Theater Outside of the newspaper profession Mr. MacFarlane had another avocation—theater. He would travel many miles to attend a stage play and he also had a keen interest in moving pictures, often expressing a desire to manage a theater. Mr. MacFarlane was widely known throughout the ___ as a newspaperman and had acquired a host of friends in the profession. He had earned a reputation for “tipping off” nearby newspapers on items of interest in the areas of their circulation coverage. He was instrumental, working in cooperation with the late Stanley Barnett of the Green Bay Press Gazette, in organizing the Fox Valley and Lake Shore Writers Club. In June of this year he was reelected vice president of the organization, a post he had held since the group was formed several years ago. Top figures in the sports, business, entertainment and professional world knew Mr. MacFarlane intimately and frequently went out of their way when in the vicinity to stop in the editorial office of The Herald-Times and visit, if even briefly, with “Packy.” He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John MacFarlane and was born Jan. 14, 1883, at Racine. In 1916 he married Mrs. Veta Martens Haukuhl, who survives along with a sister, Miss Jean MacFarlane, a French teacher at Oshkosh High School. KARL MACHMILLER, PASTOR TO END LONG PASTORATE On July 14, this year, Rev. Karl Machmiller of this city will round out a half century in the ministry. He has announced that on that date he will retire. Mr. Machmiller has been the pastor of the local German Evangelical Lutheran Congregation for almost forty years. In that time, he has not only endeared himself to his flock but he has impressed his character upon the community. He has not attempted to go outside his sphere or reform the political and social life of the people. He has evidently construed his call to preach the Gospel to mean just that, and he has done it with devotion and singleness of purpose. This and a rigid adherence to the principles of Christian rectitude, a helpful spirit and a kindly nature have earned for Rev. Karl Machmiller such esteem of his fellow citizens of all creeds and no creed that his abandonment of his labor in the vineyard as the evening begins to be presaged will cause unanimous regret where he has toiled so long and faithfully. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., March 8, 1928 ********* Rev. Machmiller Dies Here Today Pastor 37 Years of German Evangelical Lutheran Church The Rev. Karl Machmiller, 90, had spent 50 years in the ministry, 37 years of which he was pastor of the First German Evangelical Lutheran church in this city, died early this afternoon at the Holy Family hospital. He retired as pastor of the church here, in July, 1928. In recent years he has been making his home at the hospital. Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced Monday. Born in Watertown, Wis., in 1855 the Rev. Machmiller was graduated from Northwestern college, Watertown, and received his theological education at the Evangelical Lutheran seminary at St. Louis, where he was graduated in 1878. Came To City in 1891 He was assigned to a parish at Fairbanks, Iowa, where he stayed six years. Then he went to Lowell, Wis., to assume a pastorate and in March, 1891, he came here to head the German Lutheran congregation at Eighth and Marshall streets. The pastor married Miss Martha Fuerstnau, when a young man and she took an active interest with him in his church duties. She died January 18, 1928. The Rev. Machmiller saw the Lutheran congregation grow to more than 600 families here when he retired in 1928, despite the fact that a new Lutheran congregation on the north side took away 150 families. Retired in 1928 He bade farewell to his flock here on July 29, 1928, after 37 years as head of the church. On that occasion he was a guest at a big church gathering at Silver Creek park, where the congregation presented him with a $1,000 check. He was succeeded by the Rev. L. H. Koeninger. The Rev. Machmiller left Manitowoc to live with a brother at Iron River, Wis., but in recent years returned to Manitowoc to spend his declining years. Surviving the pastor are two daughters, Mrs. F. J. Asuma, of this city; Mrs. John Guse, who is in a sanatorium in Minneapolis; brother, T. F. Mackmiller of Iron River, Wis.; and a granddaughter, Mrs. John Stanton of Milwaukee. A son, Richard, preceded his father in death. Manitowoc Herald Times, July 14, 1945 P. 1 ******** Hundred of friends and former parishioners of the Rev. Karl Machmille, who died Saturday, visited the Urbanek, Wattawa and Schlei funeral home today to pay their respects to the retired pastor of the First German Evangelical Lutheran church which he served 37 years. The body will be at the funeral home until 8 o’clock Tuesday morning when it will be taken to the church to lie in state until 2 p.m., time of services, when the casket will be closed. Three ministers will officiate at the service: the Rev. L. M. Koeninger, present pastor of the church from which Rev. Machmiller retired in 1928; Dr. Henry Koch, pastor of Grace Evangelical Lutheran church in this city, and the Rev. Paul Peiper, Milwaukee. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Manitowoc Herald Times, July 16, 1945 P. 2 ********* [cause: broncho pneumonia] ********* VETERAN PASTOR LEAVES Rev. Karl Machmiller, fifty seven years in the ministry and thirty-seven in the local charge preached his farewell sermon at the German Evangelical Lutheran Church at Marshal and Eighth Streets Sunday morning. He spoke in both German and English. One main point was that the occasion should be one of joy, not sorrow, a happy leave taking that could be remembered for years without pain. He was however visibly affected. The church was decorated with countless gifts of flowers. In the afternoon there was a big picnic at Silver Creek park. Here Henry Detjen, president on behalf of the congregation presented the retiring pastor with a purse of $1000. The Marine band added immensely to the occasion and the men's choir gave enjoyable numbers. Mr. Machmiller said that he did not propose to quit working but would take a rest for a time. He left for Janesville where a daughter resides. He is to be succeeded by Rev. L. Keoninger, coming from a charge at North Fond du lac. Mr. Machmiller leaves here after decades of service with the love of his flock and the respect of every resident of the city. He has lived a life of service and has been true to the best traditions of the Christian ministry. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., Aug. 2, 1928
MARTHA MACHMILLER DEATH OF MRS. K. MACHMILLER IS GREAT SHOCK Wife of Pastor of German Ev. Church Passes Away After Short Illness Mrs. Martha Machmiller, wife of Rev. Karl Machmiller died at 9:20 last evening at the parsonage 1101 South Eighth street, which has been the family home for thirty-seven years. The demise was due to a liver complaint and followed an illness of only five days. Mrs. Machmiller was taken ill last Friday and failed steadily until the end at 9:20 last night. Her two children, Mrs. I.M. Mackmiller of Janesville and Mrs. John Guse, wife of the Rev. Guse of Litchfield, Minn., had been called several days ago and were with their mother when the end came. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon with services at the church at 2 o’clock. Prof. August Pieper of Wauwatosa officiating at the service and the trustees as pall bearers. Burial will be at Evergreen. Mrs. Machmiller, born as Martha Fuerstenau, first saw the light of day at Watertown, Wis., July 3, 1858 and grew to young womanhood there. She was married to Rev. Karl Machmiller August 28, 1878, only a little more than a month after he had been ordained as a minister and the newlyweds moved to Fairbank, Iowa, where he held his first charge. They remained for six years and then moved to Lowell, Wis., where Rev. Machmiller had accepted a call. Thirty-seven years ago they came to this city and have since made their home here. Death Is a Shock. The death of Mrs. Machmiller comes as a great shock to friends and to the community in which she has spent so many years and has won the love and admiration of those with whom she came in contact. Mrs. Machmiller, while devoted to her home and family, found time to assist her husband in his work in the congregation and through her kindly administrations, her loving sympathy and many acts of relief of those in distress and need of help, she had endeared herself not only in the congregation but to all who knew her and of her kindly deeds. Mrs. Machmiller had been in apparent health up to the time of the fatal attack and had been much interested in plans with Rev. Machmiller for celebrations they had planned this year for the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage and the half-century of Rev. Machmiller’s ordination. Surviving are the husband, two daughters, Mrs. John Guse, wife of Rev. John Guse of Litchfield, Minny and Mrs. I.M. Mackmiller of Janesville, two grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Rev. H. JOSEPH MADSON HEART ATTACK PROVES FATAL Joseph Madson Dies At St. Nazianz Today When those in the bar room of John Wiedencheck, proprietor of the St. Nazianz opera house, went to arouse Joseph Madson, 34, farm hand, who had fallen asleep at a table early this morning, they discovered that he was dead. Later in the evening he sat down at a table and buried his head in his arms.
