CARL SCHAEFER (d. 1918) KILLED IN FALL FROM WINDOW Carl Schaefer fell from a window at the county asylum while trying to get out of his room Monday night and was killed. Mr. Schaefer, who was 82 years of age had been in failing health for a long time and his mind had become afflicted. His aged wife is ill and it was found impossible to care for him at home and he was sent to the hospital and later removed to the asylum where he was given a room on the second floor. The windows were protected by a screen, both inside and out, it having been said that Mr. Schaefer had a penchant for opening windows. Shortly after 2 o'clock Tuesday morning attendants discovered Mr. Schaefer was not in his room and upon investigating found that he had forced the screen and attempted to escape by using a bed sheet as a rope. But he fell to the ground and as stated above, was killed. He was born in Germany and came to this country when a boy. He was an old resident of this city and was engaged in the tailoring business for many years. He was a Civil War Veteran. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Miss Emma Schaefer. ERWIN SCHALOWETZ FIVE YEAR OLD BOY RUN DOWN BY AUTO, YORK ST. Crushed under the wheels of a delivery car of the Kielsmeier creamery when he was struck by the car in attempting to cross the street ahead of it, Irwin, five year old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Schalowetz, York street, was seriously, if not fatally, injured late this afternoon. The child suffered a concussion of the brain and was severely injured on the leg over which the car passed. The accident is said by witnesses to have been one of those unfortunate happenings for which no one can be blamed. The driver of the car had turned his machine to avoid a wagon just as the child stepped from the curb to cross the street. The car was proceeding at a slow speed and was stopped within a few feet after striking the boy. The child was carried into the home of Frank Forestor, near by and a physician called. The condition of the child is critical. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Saturday, July 17, 1915, Page 1 ******** BOY RUN DOWN BY AUTOMOBILE SATURDAY DIES SUNDAY; 1ST FATALITY OF KIND IN THE CITY LITTLE IRWIN SCHALOWITZ, AGED 3, FAILS TO SURVIVE INJURIES SUSTAINED WHEN STRUCK BY CAR OWNED BY KIELSMEIER BROS., AND SUCCUMBS AFTER TWENTY HOURS Manitowoc has had its first automobile tragedy, little Irwin Schalowetz, run down by an automobile owned by Kielsmeier Bros. on York street, Saturday afternoon, having succumbed to injuries sustained Sunday morning at 11 o’clock. The child’s death occurred at the hospital where he had been removed late Saturday. News of the death of the boy, who was but three years old, caused a sensation in the city and awakened widespread sympathy for parents of the babe and for Walter Kielsmeier, who was the driver of the car when the terrible accident occurred. The accident happened at 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon on York street, between Ninth and Tenth streets. Mr. Kielsmeier was proceeding west on York street at a slow speed when the child stepped from the curb on the north side of the roadway, directly in the path of the car, and was struck by the front wheel of the machine. The wheel struck the babe’s head causing a fracture at the base of the brain. The body was pushed along the pavement and several abrasions were made upon the leg but aside from this the body was not marked. The child’s arm appeared to have been injured but no bones were found broken, and there were no internal injuries. At the time of the accident a moving van was backed up to the curb on the opposite side of the street where Mr. Niles, grandfather of the dead child was loading his furniture to move. The child had been a great favorite with Mr. and Mrs. Niles and it is presumed wanted to get across the street where Mrs. Niles was. Mr. Kielsmeier had turned his machine a little so as not to pass too near the horse attached to the moving van and just as he reached a point in line with the van, the child ran from the curb to cross the street and was struck by the automobile. Witnesses say that the wheels of the machine did not pass over the boy’s body and that Mr. Kielsmeier stopped within a few feet, indicating that the driver was proceeding slowly. The injured boy was carried to the home of the Forestors and Dr. C.M. Gleason was summoned and dressed the injury to the leg and cared for the little sufferer who was later taken to the hospital where he lingered through the night and early morning, death coming at 11 o’clock Sunday morning. The little victim of the tragedy was three years old, the report Saturday that he was five years old being an error. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Schalowetz and was a bright little fellow. The parents are prostrated. Manitowoc has been fortunate in escaping automobile tragedies of this nature, the death of the Schalowetz boy being the first within the city, though two years ago a little girl named Pleuss residing near Silver Lake died from injuries sustained when she was run down on the road near Brown’s corner. Coroner Falge and District Attorney Schmitz held a conference this morning and an inquest was decided upon in the Schalowetz case and a jury will be drawn. While the case appears to be an accident that was unavoidable under the circumstances, Coroner Falge believes that an inquest should be held and ordered one. Mr. Kielsmeier, driver of the car, was overcome by the accident and personally hurried to summon a physician after assisting in caring for the injured child. The inquest was called at 2 o’clock this afternoon, the following jury having been sworn: George Orth, Wm. Buenning, Wenzel Kadow, Charles Gruhle, J.G. Lehmkuhl and Frank Guse, Jr. A number of witnesses have been summoned. The funeral of the dead child will be held Wednesday morning at 9:30 from St. Boniface church, with interment at Evergreen.
