JOE BARTA MISSING MAN’S BODY IS FOUND ON LAKE BEACH Joseph Barta, Mishicot Farm Hand, Declared a Suicide By Coroner Rau. The body of Joseph Barta, 37, town of Mishicot farm hand missing since last Sunday night, was found by two boys on the beach two miles south of Two Creeks late Thursday afternoon. Barta is believed to have carried out a threat he made last year that if he had another accident with his automobile, he would end his life. Last Sunday, Barta’s car figured in a slight accident, according to Wenzel Barta, a brother with whom Joseph made his home. He disappeared from the Barta farm shortly after. No Inquest Planned The body was found by two sons of John Berres whose farm runs to the shore of the lake at that point. The only mark on the body was a bruise on the forehead apparently resulting from the automobile accident. The Berres boys ran to the home to give the alarm. Coroner G.A. Rau, Two Rivers, who was summoned, pronounced Barta’s death a suicide. No inquest will be held the coroner announced after conferring with the sheriff and district attorney. The remains were removed to the Klein and Stangel Funeral Home at Two Rivers where the aged father, Frank Barta, identified the body. Barta was unmarried and according to some of his friends, said last year following an automobile accident that if he ever had another smashup, “It would be the end of me.” Wenzel Barta, Mishicot, the brother, said the second accident in which the dead man’s car was damaged, was not serious. Funeral Saturday Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at one o’clock from the home of his brother, Frank Barta, in the town of Mishicot with interment in the Bohemian cemetery at Tisch Mills. Joseph Barta was born in the town of Mishicot Nov. 22, 1898, a son of Frank and the late Anna Dvorak Barta. For many years he worked as a farm hand on farms in the vicinity of his home. Last fall, he was hired by his brother Wenzel, with whom he made his home since. Besides his father, he leaves five sisters, Mrs. Anna Meyer, Manitowoc, Mrs. Lucy Jung, Whitelaw, Mrs. Antonie Karl, West Kewaunee, Mrs. Agnes Naidl, Whitelaw, and Mrs. Mayme Barnard of Nespelem, Wash.; and four brothers, Wenzel, town of Mishicot, Frank on the homestead farm; Otto of Denmark and Edward, also residing on the homestead farm. Manitowoc Herald Times, Thursday, January 31, 1952 p.2 ********** TWO CREEKS FARMER IS BADLY BURNED Wenzel Barta at Hospital After Losing Barn and Stock Wenzel Barta, a well known farmer of Two Creeks, is at the hospital in a precarious condition as result of burns which he suffered Saturday when fire destroyed the large barn on his farm, together with a valuable team of horses, several cows and other stock and quantities of hay and grain. Explosion of a gasoline engine which back fired and set fire to the clothing of Mr. Barta and the barn threatened to cost the life of the owner. Mr. Barta was operating the engine and when the oil caught fire his clothing became a mass of flames. Shouting to his brother for aid Mr. Barta, who saw his barn threatened rolled himself in the snow and succeeded in extinguishing the flames. He then rushed to the barn to aid in attempt being made by his brother to rescue a valuable team of horses and other livestock but the attempt was futile, the flames having gained too much headway. The barn was completely destroyed together with all its contents and the loss is estimated at between $2000 and $3000 if not more. Mr. Barta’s attempt to rescue his horses is responsible for his serious condition more than the burns which he suffered in the fire. The exposure, after his injury, operated to bring on a condition that is serious. Mr. Barta was burned about the face, left arm and left leg. Mr. Barta is a young man with a family and is well known in this city and Two Rivers. Manitowoc Herald News, Monday, December 22, 1919 Page 1

JOSEPH A. BAUER (d. 1959) Freak Accident Kills Man Near Kewaunee Joseph Bauer Victim While Clearing Snow From Driveway With Tractor. A freak accident took the life of Joseph A. Bauer, a Kewaunee County farmer, Saturday afternoon as he prepared to clear snow from his driveway. According to Sheriff Darwin Legois, Bauer started his 1925 tractor and backed down the farm driveway to the road preparatory to plowing snow. The body was discovered about a half hour later by a passerby when he noticed the unmanned machine running in the ditch. Death resulted from a skull fracture. ANTON HOLLY ANTON HOLLY, TISCH MILLS FARMER, DIES AT 57. HAD ASSEMBLY POST; BUTCHER FOR LONG TIME. Dairy Cooperative Leader To Be Buried Wednesday; Had Slaughter Record. Anton Holly, 57, former Tisch Mills meat dealer and cattle buyer in Kewaunee county, and for three terms, a member of the assembly from Kewaunee county in the state legislature, died early this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Josephine Cherovsky, in the city of Kewaunee. He had been in failing health for the last six months. Learning the butcher’s trade when a boy of 19, Mr. Holly established a national record of slaughtering and dressing a beef complete for the block in four minutes and 26 seconds. This record, as far as known, has never been beaten. After giving up the meat market at Tisch Mills, he operated a 160 acre farm in the town of Carlton, Kewaunee county, just north of Tisch Mills and in addition, engaged in cattle buying. It was in 1920 that he was elected to the assembly on the republican ticket over August Fenske and he was returned to Madison by the voters at two subsequent elections. For the last few years, he had been living a retired life, although prominent in cooperative dairy and cheese movements. Born on Farm Anton Holly was born on a farm in the town of Franklin, Kewaunee county, March 19, 1875. In his youth, he learned the butcher trade and opened a shop in Tisch Mills. He was married 35 years ago to Miss Mary Forst, and they took up their home at Tisch Mills. In the years that followed, Mr. Holly won many beef slaughtering contests, terminating when he established the national record which still holds. KAREL MARSALEK Two Creeks News: DIED - Carl Marshalek died at his home in Tisch Mills on Sunday last (August 21). He was about 52 years old at the time of his death. Mr. Marshalek was born in Nowe Kdiny, Bohemia. While quite young he left his native country to settle in America and at a time when the tide of immigration was turned toward the lake shore counties of Wisconsin especially those of Manitowoc and Kewaunee. He was married in 1872, the issue of which was three daughters and one son and to all he was anxious to give a liberal education. Until the past two years he was the proprietor of the well-known "County Line House" of Tisch Mills. The deceased was in ill health for more than a year. He was troubled with Bright's Disease. No pains were spared by his wife and his aged mother, who survive him to restore him to health, but gradually as time passed on it was discovered that all proved fruitless. While an invalid his children were devoted to him and never for a moment did they cease to calm and comfort their fond, suffering father. He was an ardent supporter and a good member of the Catholic Church. His funeral was probably the largest ever witnessed in this vicinity. Two Catholic societies of which he was a member paid him their last tribute by marching in a body from his home to his grave. His remains were interred in the Catholic Cemetery in Tisch Mills on Tuesday of this week. Manitowoc County Chronicle, Tues., Aug. 30, 1898 ******** Notes From Nero: The funeral of Carl Marshalek (sic) of Tisch Mills on Tuesday of last week was probably the largest witnessed here for many years. MARIE MARSALEK A fourteen-year-old daughter of Charles Marschalek, proprietor of the County Line house at Tisch Mills, Manitowoc county, died recently after an illness of several days. The disease from which she died is believed to have been brought on by drinking impure water. Others in Mr. Marschalek’s household were taken at the same time but recovered. Many in that vicinity have been similarly afflicted. The symptoms of the disease appear to be similar to those of cholera. Oshkosh Daily Northwestern, June 11, 1887.

JOSEF SKUBAL Tisch Mills: DIED - Once more we reminded that the silent messenger of death passed this way on Saturday, stopping in its flight to summon another friend and neighbor, Jos. Skubal, to that mysterious country where during untold ages, countless numbers have gone before and from whose shores no traveler returns. His long career marked him as a man of deeds rather than words. His devotion to his wife and children and his kindness and charity to his friends will long linger as a fragrant memory in the hearts of those who knew him best. Thus marks the passing of another pioneer. Though he is gone his record has been made and will remain with us as a lasting memento of a life well lived and a duty faithfully performed. Mr. Skubal has been for the past year a sufferer of a complication of diseases and nothing could bring him relief but death. He is survived by a wife and several grown up children to whom we extend our most sincere sympathy. His remains were laid to rest on Wednesday afternoon in the Public Cemetery and a large concourse of friends followed the deceased to its last resting place. The Reporter, Sat., Dec. 4, 1914

JOSEPH SKUBAL (d. 1925) JOS SKUBAL ENDS LIFE ON COUNTRY ROAD Body with Bullet in Heart Found off Highway 16 Joseph Skubal, 49 and unmarried, a former police officer of the city committed suicide some time last night when enroute from Kellnersville to this city. Skubal's dead body with a bullet from a .38 caliber revolver was found in his automobile a short distance off Highway 16, north of Francis Creek, early today. Investigation by the authorities made the suicide theory acceptable although sensational rumors of murder had been circulated earlier. Discovery of the dead body of Skubal in the automobile which had been ditched apparently by intent, was made by Clarence Trochil, son of Wencil Trochil, who with his father had engaged in work on the road, a county trunk line off the second turn north of Francis Creek. The boy summoned his father and report was made to the sheriff's office here and Sheriff Kasten and the district attorney proceeded to the scene, being followed later by Coroner Kempen. Skubal's body was wrapped in a blanket and the shot through the heart had been fired from underneath the blanket. The car, which of all appearances had been driven along the end of the embankment at the side of the road with care and had turned over on its right side, was not damaged, except for a broken glass of a rear door and a hole in the top. It is believed that Skubal did not leave the car after it was ditched and made no attempt to get it out as the engine was not damaged and the lights were alright. The man had evidently wrapped himself in the blanket with a view to spending the night in the car and upon later thought had fired the fatal shot. The bullet penetrated the heart and caused instant death. The body was cold when found, indicating that the tragedy occurred sometime earlier. Skubal, it is said had been considerably worried over the loss of an appeal in the Supreme Court of a suit to which he was defendant in local courts and in which a judgment for several hundred dollars had been found against him. Skubal had been unable to raise money to meet the judgment, it is said, and had been pressed for payment and it had preyed upon him. It is also reported that the dead man had differences with relatives and that on one occasion recently had made threats against a brother, although members of the family said that the trouble was not thought to cause his rash action. Mr. Skubal was born in Mishicot August 19, 1876 being 49 years of age. He received his education in the Mishicot schools and later removed to this city where he was a member of the fire department for some time and in 1920 took an examination and was named to the police force. He served on the force until November, 1924 when he resigned. Of late, he had been employed as a salesman for the Mason Shoe Company of Chippewa Falls and was in Kellnersville yesterday in that capacity. He formerly made his home with his brother, John F. Skubal until the later located at Melnik and since that time had resided with a sister, Mrs. Emma Fowler, Jay Street, this city. Three brothers, John at Melnik, Louis and Anton at Mishicot; three sisters, Mrs. Emma Fowler, city, Mrs. Mary Martinee, Chicago and Mrs. Anna Gabriel of Denver survive. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Coroner W.G. Kemper said this afternoon that it was not probable that an inquest would be called in the death as the evidence was conclusive that the cause was one of suicide. Sensational rumors flooded the city this morning and originally reported John Skubal, brother of the dead man, as the victim of a murder. It is said that Skubal had told officers that his life had been threatened recently. A search of the effects in the grip after the arrival of the coroner revealed a note directly that the debts owed by Skubal, all of which were listed, be paid out of the insurance money and that the funeral expenses also be taken from this sum. The note dispels all doubt of the death being a suicide. Manitowoc Herald News - Thursday, Oct. 22, 1925 - page 1 ******* SKUBAL TO BE BURIED ON SATURDAY The funeral of Joseph Skubal, former city patrolman who committed suicide in his sedan near Kellnersville sometime Wednesday night, will be held from the home of his brother, Louis Skubal in the town of Mishicot tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Tepley of Melnik officiating. Burial will be in the Tisch Mills Cemetery. Notes left by Skubal in a tablet found with his insurance papers indicate that he feared sudden death or contemplated taking his own life. He lists a number of personal debts with the amount due including $700 due on his car and then directs that after the payment of the debts, the balance of insurance money be used by his brother, John Skubal to pay the funeral expenses. Skubal's body was removed to the home of his brother yesterday afternoon after Dr. W.G. Kemper, county coroner had viewed the remains and the scene of the death. No inquest was ordered.
