IGNATZ BLAHA FATHER OF MERCER TEACHER STRIKEN Ignatz Blaha Spent Last Several Summers with Son Mercer, Wis., March 16 - Word was received here Tuesday that Ignatz Blaha, 69, father of Julius Blaha, Mercer teacher, died at his Two Rivers, Wis., home early Tuesday morning. Death resulted from pneumonia. Mr. Blaha was well known here having spent the past several summers in Mercer and at the Big Lake resort of another son, Otto. He was an ardent fisherman and hunter. Ironwood Daily Globe, Wed., Mar. 6, 1940 page 2 ********* HISTORY OF BLAHA HOMESTEAD DATES BACK TO DAYS OF NERO AND THE PFISTER TANNERY THERE Back in 1860 or thereabouts, a little village of Nero vied with Manitowoc for the position of leading city in this section of the state but today, all that is left of Nero is the memory of it by some of our older residents in the Township of Two Creeks. Ignatz Blaha, 60 year old retired farmer, living with his son, Victor on the Blaha homestead, route 1, still recalls some of the events and activities of that extinct village which played such an important part in the early history of Two Creeks. Frank Blaha, the father of Ignatz, came over from Bohemia sometime about 1860 and secured a job in the tannery at Nero. Practically all the land in that section of the county was owed by Pfister who operated the tannery. Many years before Pfister had purchased thousands of acres of land along the lakefront to operate his saw mill and tannery. As soon as the lumber and tan bark was removed from an acre of land, the land was sold to men who wished to clear it for agricultural purposes. The best customers for this type of land were the employees of the tannery, who paid for it by their labor in the tannery. Frank Blaha secured his first 40 acres of land in this manner. He put up a log shack during spare time before and after working hours to house his family. Ignatz recalls that there was a logging camp located to the west and the logs were conveyed to the saw mill at Nero on a narrow gauge track. The cars coasting down from the camp on a natural incline to the lake front from where they were hauled back to the camp by oxen to be reloaded with logs. Frank Blaha raised a large family, paid for his original 40 acres and added 40 more acres to it later on. In due course of time, the farm passed into the possession of Ignatz. The tannery village of Nero was completely destroyed by fire and was never built up again and the present hamlet of Two Creeks sprang up along the highway. Ignatz carried on the task of improving the farm, paid off the heirs and saw the township of Two Creeks change from a wilderness into a highly developed agricultural area. He started breeding a herd of holstein cattle in about 1902 and at the present time has a fine herd of about 25 head of high producing Holsteins, the greater share of which are registered. The barn and house have been modernized and a few years ago his son, Victor, took over the management of the farm and is carrying on the work of improvement and progress started by his grandfather.
