He died in the home of his son in Town Newton. The funeral will take place this afternoon at the Lutheran Cemetery alongside Meyer's farm. Der Nord Westen, 21 Sept. 1893 ******** (Note: St. Paul cemetery is on Weyer's Corners ******* Further details on the life of Julius Hermannn Vogel, whose death was reported last week. Mr. Vogel talked about his life to us a few years ago: "I was born 13 July 1792 in Dresden, Saxony. At age 19 I began service on 11 Dec. 1811 in the Saxon Dragoon Regiment. In 1812, shortly before the march into Russia, I was promoted to Corporal. The march into Russia was difficult, but the retreat from Moscow was frightful. I served in the army of the Saxon General Leggoques, then subsequently in the French Army under General Reincke. The burning of Moscow was an enormous spectacle: I lay only 30 Werst* from it on icy fields, hungry, thirsty, and freezing. The crossing of the Beresina was terrifying. I served in the advance party of the Life Company of the feared tyrant Napoleon I, so that I was able to see his intimidating face almost daily. I was severely wounded at Kalisch and still carry scars. For a few days we were held prisoners by the Cossacks, then 39 of us risked the ice and snow to escape, suffering hunger and thirst and wolves, finally reaching the Saxon Free Corps under Col. Taubenheimer on the Bohemian border. I was also lightly wounded at Waldheim, Saxony in 1813. (*Russian measure. One Werst is 1.0668 kilometers or about 1170 yards.) Pieper officiating. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Saturday, February 4, 1899 P.1 ********* Frederick Weyer of Newton died on Friday last quite advanced in years. He was one of the early settlers of Newton and owned a large and highly productive farm. Several years ago he built a large house of a peculiar style of architecture which must have cost a mint of money. He was rather eccentric and was always getting up something odd in the line of vehicles. He was a man of considerable intellectual attainments and wrote a history of the Bible. He visited Germany several years ago to submit the manuscript to Bismarck but failed to secure an audience. He put in much time on this work and the piles of manuscript he carefully guarded.
