DENNIS E. BEHNKE Dennis Behnke 15, was found dead in an overturned truck in a creek near Reedsville yesterday morning when his brothers, (private), were lead to the scene by one of Dennis' dogs. The dog, ice coated where water had frozen on him after he swam out of the creek, rushed back to the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Behnke, town of Rockland, for help after his young master lost control of the farm truck he was driving and plunged off a bridge abutment. The car landed on an extension of the abutment on its top, breaking Dennis' neck. Was Going Hunting Dennis left his home, 4-1/2 miles southwest of Reedsville, yesterday morning on his way to the farm of his uncle, Emry Dallman. He had two dogs with him and was going hunting. Mrs. Behnke saw her son turn the corner at a nearby farm, less than a mile away, but did not see the machine reappear on a hill a short distance further on. She did not become alarmed, however, until the dog came racing back to the farm, his body wet and ice coated. His brothers (private) set out immediately to find their brother. At a creek spanned by a concrete bridge, they found their brother pinned under the little farm truck in three feet of water. The entire top of the car was crushed in. DAVID KRUEGER (d. 1904) With the death of David Krueger which occurred Sunday at his home in Rockland, one of the landmarks, solid, substantial and most worthy citizens was removed from the scenes of this life; settling in that township in 1853 when it was nothing more than a wilderness, he had by frugal and honest methods reared to respectability a large family and acquired a competency in the way of a large farm that any man might be proud of. Every man that understood David Krueger was his friend. Plain and outspoken always but willing at anytime to do what he could for a neighbor or friend, very few realize the hardships that this man endured. He fought through two wars, one in his native country (Germany) which ended in 1848 and the other our civil war in which he served with honor to himself and country. He leaves one son and four daughters, namely August, Mrs. A. Hemple, of Cecil, Mrs. W. H. Pettey and Mrs. Ferd. Haese of Brillion and Mrs. Amelia Reinke of Milwaukee. The funeral was held at the Rockland Evangelical church on Tuesday and was very largely attended, people coming for miles to pay their last tribute of respect to their old friend and comrade. FERDENAND KRUEGER EXTRA! MAN IS FOUND DEAD IN SWAMP NEAR COLLINS Believed to have been overcome while crossing a swamp in the town of Collins and then to have frozen to death, Ferdinand Krueger, 60 year old town of Franklin farm worker, was found early this afternoon by a nephew searching for him. The dead man was last seen on Sunday night when he left the home of his brother, Emil, for whom he worked with the announced intentions of visiting relatives at Collins. Failure of Mr. Krueger to return to his home on Sunday caused no worry as it was believed that he had remained on a more extended visit than first planned, but after several days passed without trace being found of him, a search was started. It was brought to a close early this afternoon when the dead mans' nephew, Clarence Krueger, found the body near the old homestead. Partly Covered Definite cause of Mr. Krueger's death was not determined up until 3 o'clock this afternoon as persons finding the body did not disturb it but notified Sheriff Herman Carstens who, with Coroner W.G. Kemper, left immediately for the scene to investigate the conditions surrounding the death. The body, it was said, was partly covered by ice covering the swamp. Mr. Krueger was a life-long resident of the county and was born in the town of Rockland. He never married and his only immediate relatives are two brothers and several sisters, living in the vicinity of Collins. Manitowoc Herald News, Manitowoc, Wis. January 7, 1932 P. 1 ******** NO INQUEST IN DEATH OF MAN FOUND IN SWAMP Co. Authorities Ascribe Death of Fred Krueger, Rockland Man, To Exposure No inquest to determine the death causes of Ferdinand Krueger, 63-year old town of Rockland resident found dead in the township yesterday afternoon after being missing from his home since Sunday, will be held, county authorities announced today after conducting an investigation shortly after the man was found. Death, it was said, was due to exposure as there were no marks on the man's head or body to indicate violence. Barking of dogs sent out to gather cattle attracted the attention of Clarence Krueger, a nephew of the dead man, and when he investigated he discovered the body, partly underneath the water. The body was found midway between Collins and the home of Emil Krueger, a brother with whom Ferdinand Krueger resided, a distance of about one and one-half miles from each place. Died In Sleep Authorities who investigated said they believed that Krueger died while sleeping in the swamp. It was thought that he was walking along Highway 32 when he became drowsy and walked into the swamp at the side of the road to rest below trees about 150 feet from the highway. One hand was in his pocket and the other was being used as a pillow by him. Burial Monday Funeral services for the deceased will be held from the home of Emil Krueger on Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock and from the Evangelical Zion church of Rockland at 1:30 o'clock with interment taking place in the church cemetery. Besides the brother with whom he resided, Krueger is survived by two other brothers and four sisters living in the vicinity of Rockland. Manitowoc Herald News, Manitowoc, Wis. OLGA PETERMANN KILLED BY A BOLT OF LIGHTNING The home of Paul F. Peterman of Rantoul was plunged into sorrow on Monday afternoon at about half past three o'clock when his wife was killed by a bolt of lightning while at work in the garden. Mr. and Mrs. Peterman were at work in the garden when a rain storm came up. Her husband left her and went to the barn to put the cattle in and when he returned he was horrified to find his wife lying prostrated on the ground. He hurried to her side and raised her up but life seemed to be extinct. In the vain hope that she might be resuscitated he summoned Dr. Bolton who arrived at the Peterman home, shortly after but she was beyond earthly help. She was struck on the head, the bolt passing through her body, tearing her shoes from her feet and badly discoloring her face and body. The strange feature of the sad happening is that the storm was not a severe one, the flash of lightning being about the only one noticeable. Olga Krueger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. G. Krueger, was born in the town of Rockland, Manitowoc County, Oct. 2, 1892, remaining there until her marriage to Paul F. Peterman on Dec. 11, 1913. They lived at the Krueger home for some time then moved to Gravesville and three and a half years ago purchased the Geo. Whalen farm in Rantoul on which the accident occurred. Her neighbors speak in the highest praise of the deceased as a neighbor, wife and mother and all over the deepest sympathy to the bereft husband and little son, who survived her. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon, the body being taken to her old home in Rockland for interment, following services held at the Rockland Evange- lical Church. In addition to her husband and little son she also leaves her parents, a brother, Levi Krueger, of Rockland, and five sisters, Mrs. Wm Behnke, Misses Alma, Martha, Linda and Irene of Rockland. Many beautiful floral pieces were presented Mr. Schultz, although living to an advanced age was active and alert up to a few days before his death. He was a highly respected neighbor and friend and a kind and loving husband and father. Taken sick last Tuesday he failed rapidly and calmly and peacefully breathed his last Sunday evening, surrounded by members of his family. Thus one by one the ranks of the sturdy pioneer settlers are thinned and each year finds the surviving group growing less and less as one by one they answer the Final Summons. With them died much of the old true genuine hospitality and neighborly solicitude.
