FRED C. SCHWALBE (d. 1898) Private Fred C. Schwalbe, son of Friedrich Schwalbe and Emelie Zutz, was born in Rockland Township, near Collins, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, on February 6, 1875. He served in Company H of the 2nd Regiment of the Wisconsin Volunteers, during the Spanish American War and died on July 27, 1898 of typhoid fever at the old Civil War battlefield in Chickamauga, Georgia. He is buried in the family plot near his parents in St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery at Collins, Wisconsin. (No newspaper or date) ********* Death on Wednesday last week of Fred Schwalbe of Eaton in Camp Thomas in Chicamauga, a member of Company H, 2nd Wisconsin Regiment of typhus. The 22 year old young man is a son of Fred Schwalbe who is serving in Washington in government. The casket will be brought to Eaton and buried there on Monday. Der Nord Westen, Aug. 4, 1898 ********* Notes From Niles: One of the saddest and largest funerals that ever took place in our midst, occurred here last Saturday afternoon, when the remains of F.C. Schwalbe were brought here for interment. Fred was the first victim from this county of the present war with Spain. When the president issued his first call for volunteers, Fred was one of the first to enlist, and went with Co. H of Manitowoc. His letters since that time to relatives and friends were jolly, but he was anxiously waiting for a chance to get to Cuba to fight the Dons. Shortly before the order was given to move to Charleston he was taken with typhoid fever and after about four weeks of terrible suffering he succumbed to the dreadful disease. When he was in a delirious state he called for his father incessantly, and he was sent for and was with him the last few weeks of his illness and also accompanied the remains here. Fred was the son of Fred Schwalbe, Sr., who resides at Washington, D.C., at present. He was formerly a teacher and taught three successful terms of school in this county, but resigned his position to go to the front. He had no bad habits, was strictly temperate in all things, and was beloved by all his many friends. He was just the sort of a young man that would have made a good soldier, and we think would have been promoted rapidly for his bravery, good conduct, and patriotism. Mr. and Mrs. Schwalbe and family have the sympathy of the whole community. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, August 4, 1898 pg. 2 ******** The remains of Fred Schwalbe, the young soldier of Co. Vallesky claimed to have lost 21 sheep in different months but the jury found that only the sheep killed in the month of June should be charged up to the Schroeder dog and awarded $10 each for eleven sheep killed in this month together with $3.50 each for six lambs accounting in all to $131. Vallesky tried to make a settlement with his neighbor before the court action was started claiming that he should receive double the amount the sheep were valued because the farmer had been notified that the dog was committing the depredations. The case was remarkable in that twenty witnesses were heard in one day and a decision reached the same day the case was tried. She would have been 84 years of age on August 2, being born in Germany on August 2, 1845. Her maiden name was Augusta Zutz and she was married in 1863, her husband dying some time ago. She is survived by three children, Mrs. Robert Reichard of this city,Adolph Wegner of Chilton and Fred Wegner of Minneapolis. Nineteen grandchildren and 13 great grand- children, two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Murray, Duluth and Mrs. Arnold Luethy, Milwaukee and three brothers, Adolph Zutz of Red Lake Falls, Minnesota, Fred Zutz of Rhinelander and William Zutz of Fargo, N. Dakota also survive. The body will remain at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert Reichard until Saturday morning and it will then be taken to the town of Rockland where services will be held from the Lutheran church at 1:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Schlei officiating. Manitowoc Herald News, April 11, 1929 ******** TOWN OF EATON RESIDENT, DIES Mrs. Paul Wegner, a life long resident of the Town of Easton, passesd away at 10:30 am Thursday, April 11, 1929 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert Reichard in this city. Coming to Manitowoc in October to visit her daughter, she became ill and was confined to her bed the greater part of the winter. She was born in Prussian Germany on August 2, 1845 and would be 84 years of age on her next birthday. Her maiden name was Auguste Zaetz and on coming to America with her parents, she lived practically all her life in the Town of Eaton having been married at the age of 18 to Paul Wegner who passed away April 23, 1902. She was the mother of seven children, the three remaining being Fred of Minneapolis, Adolph on the home farm where she made her home and Mrs. Robert Reichard of this city. Besides her immediate family she is survived by nineteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren; three brothers, Adolph Zutz of Red Lake Falls, Minn., Fred of Rhinelander and William of Fargo, N.D., also two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Murray of Duluth, Minn., and Mrs. Arnold Luethy of Milwaukee; her sister, Mrs. Murray spending the past winter with her during her illness besides a legion of friends and relatives who mourn her passing for to almost everyone she was known as "Grandma" Wegner. The body remained at the home of her daughter until Saturday forenoon when it was taken to the old home in Eaton now occupied by her son, Adolph with whom she had lived since the passing of her husband. Funeral services were read at St. Peter's Church in the Town of Eaton Sunday pm., April 14 by Rev. Wm Schlei of whose church she had been a devout member, assisted by Rev. Theo Uetzmann of this city, the long cortege proving the esteem in which she was held by everyone. She was the last of the old settlers, those sturdy men and women who braved the hardships and difficulties of pioneer days to blaze a trail and a home for those who succeeded them; a woman of great natial(sic) reserve and executive ability; a patient and willing assistant in sickness and in trouble in her community and her passing even at such a ripe age is to be regretted by neighbors and friends as well as the void in the hearts of her immediate family. No task was too great nor assistance too hard for "Grandma Wegner" and in her immediate family she was a comforter and a consoler to many in sorrow and affliction; her mind finding no place for criticism or ill will and of her may it be well said, "It is regrettable to leave life when best fitted for it."" She maintained so great an interest in all about her, her children, her friends, her flowers and her garden that she did not grow old for she always saw the person in you first, while the things you did or said were secondary. It is a thrilling experience to meet with such people and to be able to count them among ones most precious possessions. And the loss to her children can only be compensated by the fact that: In the Heavens above The Angels whispering to one another; Can find, amid their burning terms of love, None so devotional as that of "Mother", Peace and eternal rest to the soul of "Grandma Wegner" Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., Apr. 18, 1929
