Manitowoc Herald Times Monday, February 9, 1953 pg. 4-M ******** FARMER IS GORED BY BULL Frank Klabatch May Die as Result of Vicious Attack TOSSED 20 FEET OVER BIG DITCH Gored by an angry bill and thrown bodily over a ditch and into a pool of water, where he was picked up and found to have sustained such serious inuries that he may died, Frank Klabatch, a Whitelaw farmer is in a serious condition and it is said his death is not unexpected. the occurrance took place this morning a the farm of Joseph Lemberger, a neighbor. Lemberger sought to take the animal out of the barn and was leading him by a rope when the bull started to attach the owner, who, however, let go of the rope when he saw he could not manage the animal and sent his little girl over to Klabatch to secure assistance. The latter came over and had hardly stepped into the yard when the bull turned and ran toward him. Klabatch, who was unafraid sought to grapple with the bull while Lemberger is said to have cautioned his neighbor to seek safety in flight for it was apparent that both men had better make a concerted effort if they wanted to catch him. His neighbor however, either because he did not have the time or because he thought he could handle the maddened bovine, grabbed the animal by the horns but only for an instant. the bull wrestled with Klabatch for a moment and then got free. Giving a vicious lunge, the animal made a sweeping flank movement, caught Klabatch in the side with his horn, which buried itself in the body of the unfortunate man and then lifted the victim bodily off the ground, tossed him twenty feet over a ditch. Klabatch, bleeding and unconscious, lay there for over two minutes while the bull stood over him. He made no further assault however, and the unconscious man was picked up and carried to his home. Doctors were called from nearby villages who are now caring for the man and it is not known at the hour of going to press whether he will live, the hole in his side where the horn entered is five inches deep and it is thought that some vital organ was pierced. The Lemberger and Klabatch farms are located about a mile and a half southwest of Whitelaw. The bull which is a Holstein is but three years old and has never shown symptoms of viciousness before. He has always been gentle and tractable and has been led out of his stall many times before without showing temper. Desiring for all time to rid himself of the animal, Mr. Lemberger, after the incident, telephoned for Anton Bruner, the Whitelaw butcher to come and dispatch the animal. Bruner did not want to take any chances so he took a rifle to the Lemberger farm and went into the field rather cautiously. Picking the bull out of the herd, Bruner shot him full in the head but the lead only had the effect of enraging the target. Six shots from a Winchester were necessary to dispatch the bull; the carcass of which was bought by the meat market, Manitowoc. Klabatch, the injured man, is married and owns a farm adjoining that of Lemberger. Manitowoc Daily Herald - Aug. 10, 1912 - page 1 ******** Last week at a party near Pine Grove in Cato there was case of accidental shooting through negligance, which proved almost fatal. Frank Klabatz (sic) had a revolver which he thought was loaded with a blank cartidge. He discharged it and then discovered it "was loaded." The bullet struck George Zieber in the left breast and penetrated the lung on that side. An attempt was made to keep the whole matter a secret, but the facts finally leaked out.
