DIANNE JEAN BUCHBERGER Two Killed, Two Injured When Car Strikes Tree Two Cleveland teen-agers were killed outright and two others were injured early Sunday when a car left County Trunk M, a half mile south of Franklin, and uprooted a large tree. The dead were identified as John A. Logan, 18, the driver, and Miss Dianne Jean Buchberger, 16, a passenger in the front seat of the car. Injured and reported in "fair" condition at St. Nicholas Hospital today were Thomas Wagner, 17, and miss Clementine Meyer, 16, also of Cleveland. Miss Meyer was being treated for a fractured collarbone, a back injury and multiple bruises. Wagner's injuries included a fractured right leg and ankle and lacerations of the scalp and left leg. It was the first double fatality accident in Sheboygan County this year and raised the county's 1959 highway death tool to five, compared with nine on this date a year ago. Torn Out Of Ground Investigating sheriff deputies said Logan's northbound car hurtled off a curve with such force that it torn an 18-inch diameter tree out of the ground, 125 feet beyond the edge of the highway, and then smashed into a smaller tree. The car, a 1954 Chevrolet two-door sedan, was completely demolished. Deputies said the uprooted tree tore through the frame metal of the auto and pinned both Logan and Miss Buchberger against the dashboard. Wrecking equipment from a Plymouth garage had to be used to pull apart the twisted wreckage before the bodies could be extricated. Miss Meyer and Wagner, who were riding in the back seat, were thrown from the auto after the impact. They landed about 10 feet beyond the wreckage. Dr. Roman C. Pauly, acting county coroner, pronounced both victims dead at the scene. He said Logan apparently died of a crushed chest and abdomen. He attributed Miss Buchberger's death to probable fractured neck and internal injuries. Both died instantly. Sheriff Harold B. Kroll, who visited the scene of the accident Sunday morning, said the car narrowly missed hitting a large rock, about 30 inches high and four feet long, along the north side of the curve. He said evidence at the scene indicated that the car, after hurtling a ditch along the edge of the road, may have spun through the air over the rock before crashing into the tree. Cause of the accident remained a mystery today. Miss Meyer, who was questioned at the hospital this morning by sheriff deputies, said she was sleep in the back seat of the car at the time of the mishap. Flags Down Motorist After being thrown from the car, she stumbled back to the road and flagged down a passing motorist who notified the sheriff's office from a nearby farm home. Wagner was under sedation at the hospital today and could not be questioned. Miss Meyer said she and the Buchberger girl had met Logan and Wagner at a wedding dance late Saturday night at the Tourist Inn at St. Wendel. She said Logan offered to drive her and Dianne to another wedding dance at Laack's Hall in Johnsonville to look for Dianne's sister. They left St. Wendel between 11:30 p.m. and midnight. The girls spend 15 or 20 minutes at Laack's hall, while Logan and Wagner waited outside in the car, and then began the return trip to Cleveland. Miss Meyer told deputies that shortly after they let Johnsonville, Dianne fell asleep in the front seat and she fell asleep in the back. Neither had been drinking, she said. The accident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. Attended Central Dianne, a daughter of Joseph and Loretta Piehl Buchberger of Cleveland, would have been a junior at Sheboygan Central High School this fall. Logan, a 1958 graduate of Central High, was the son of Edward and Catherine Steinhardt Logan. he was employed at the Lakeshore Canning Co. at Cleveland. REUBEN SCHNEIDER From Der Nord Westen, 04 July 1889: Death on Sat. of a 6-yr. old son of Mr. Albert Schneider in Centerville, with the burial on Monday.
WILLIAM SCHNEIDER Threshing Accident Kills County Farmer William Schneider, 51, town of Centerville farmer, was killed instantly Thursday afternoon when he fell head first into the whirling blades of his threshing machine which was in operation on the Frank Junk farm at the south end of the village of Centerville. Schneider was standing on a wagon loaded with grain and was feeding bundles into the separator. Also on the wagon was Arno Thomas. They had finished unloading the wagon and Schneider reached down to pick up a bundle that had fallen between the threshing machine and the wagon. He apparently lost his footing, fell on the treadmill, and was drawn into the blades. Thomas caught hold of Schneider’s legs and attempted to pull him out of the machine, but could not get good footing and was unable to do more than hold on until the machine was shut off. It was believed that Schneider was alive when he was taken out of the machine, and Dr. F. A. Kolb, Howards Grove, and a priest were summoned. Dr. Theodore A. Teitgen, Manitowoc county coroner, said that death must have been instantaneous, however. There was a deep cut running diagonally across Schneider’s head, and he was almost decapitated. There were also cuts and bruises on his chest, arms, and legs, probably made by spikes on the treadmill. Sheriff Elmer Bergner was summoned with the coroner. Dr. Teitgen said that no inquest will be necessary. Schneider, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Schneider, was born in Centerville in 1890 and attended parochial schools there. In 1920, he married Miss Magdelena Schneider of Centerville, and they located on the present homestead farm. He was a member of the St. George Catholic church in Centerville and the Holy Name society. Survivors are the widow; two sons, Raymond and Eugene, on the home farm; a daughter, Caroline Mary, on the home farm; three brothers, John, of Hika, Anton and Joseph, of Centerville; three sisters, Mrs. George Bauman and Miss Albertina Schneider of Centerville, and Mrs. Frank Schikowski, of Sheboygan. Burial will be in the St. George cemetery in Centerville. The body may be viewed after Sunday morning at the funeral home. The rosary will be recited at the funeral home Sunday evening at 8 o’clock. HUGO SCHURRER Oldest Resident of Cleveland Dies at Age 94 CLEVELAND—This village’s oldest resident and the oldest tavern license holder in the state, Hugo Schurrer, 94, died Tuesday morning at St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan, where he had been a patient the past five days. Schurrer had traveled half-way around the world from Stuttgart, Germany, where he was born, to make his home at Cleveland in 1885.
