JOHANNA MENKE July 19, 1911-September 27, 2004 ***** Miss Johanna Menke Wedded To Louis H. Gunnemann Jr. In a nuptial ceremony read by her father, the Rev. Otto Menke, at the First Reformed church in Manitowoc at 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Miss Johanna Menke became the bride of Louis H. Gunnemann Jr. Miss Menke is the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Otto Menke of Manitowoc and the groom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Louis Gunnemann Sr. of Indianapolis. During the service, Dr. Josias Friedli of Mission House led a prayer and two classmates of the groom at Mission Hours, Miss Helen Strassburger and Burnell Eckhardt of this city, sand a soprano and tenor duet, "The Lord Is My Shepherd.: Miss Strassburger's solo was "O Perfect Love." The bride, escorted to the altar by the groom, wore a simply cut white satin gown with long sleeves edged with a ruffle. The high neckline was accented with a row of gardenias at the front. The veil arranged in cap effect and caught with a row of tiny orange blossoms, was trimmed with lace and her cap was formed of lace Her shower bouquet was fashioned of pink roses, snapdragons and blue larkspur. Miss Martha Menke, sister of the bride, was maid of honor and Miss Margaret Gunnemann, sister of the groom was bridesmaid. They were attired in pink and blue frocks fashioned alike. Net capes edged with taffeta ruffles and an edging of ruffles on the gown were the only trimmings. They carried arm bouquets of pink roses and snapdragons. Edwin Gunnemann was best man and Frederick Menke, groomsman. White lilacs, red tulips, lilies of the valley and narcissus were used lavishly to decorate the church. Large bouquets of lilacs lined the aisle down which the wedding party came. Melving Kitzerow was the organist and the organ was decorated with white lilacs and red tulips. An informal reception was held at the Menke home from 5 until 6 o'clock and a wedding dinner was served at 6:30 o'clock to immediate relatives who included the parents of the groom, his brother and sister, and Leon Baumer, all of Indianapolis, the bride's uncle and grandfather, Walter and Frederick Menke of Potter, and Elsa Schmidt of Black Creek. Mr. Gunnemann, although he will not be ordained to the ministry until June 16, has finished his theological studies at Mission House seminary and has already been assigned to a pastorate in Tipton. Gunnemann, age 93, a resident of Cedar Lake Health Care in West Bend, died on Sept. 27, 2004, at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee, where she had been a patient the past week. She was surrounded by members of her family at the time of her death. The oldest of three children, Mrs. Gunnemann was born on July 19, 1911, in Schaller, Iowa, to the Reverend Otto and Anna Maurer Menke. On June 4, 1935, she was married to the Rev. Louis H. Gunnemann in Manitowoc. As a minister in the Evangelical and Reformed Church (now the United Church of Christ), her husband served parishes in Tipton, Iowa, and Lafayette, Ind., before becoming Professor and Dean of Mission House Seminary near Plymouth in 1953. With the move of the seminary in 1962, he became Dean of United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities in New Brighton, Minn. After her husband’s death in 1989, she continued to live in Fridley, Minn., before moving to the Cedar Lake Campuses in West Bend in 1997. As a young woman, Johanna had served as church organist for the church her father served in Manitowoc. Johanna continued as a active member of the churches her husband served, in the ladies organizations at St. John and Salem Churches in Lafayette Ind., and was an active member of Immanuel UCC in the Town of Herman, Sheboygan County, and St. Anthony Park Congregational UCC in St. Anthony Park, Minn. She will be remembered by both students and faculty alike at the seminaries at which her husband taught, opening her home to students; she was a gracious hostess and mentor to the students, and when the situation required, lent a nurturing hand. Since moving to the Cedar Lake Campus, she had been a member of Immanuel UCC in West Bend. Mrs. Gunnemann is survived by her three children and their spouses, .... She is also survived by five grandchildren; two step-grandsons; four great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandson; two sisters-in-law, Elsa Gunnemann of Los Angeles, Calif., and Jeanette Menke of Sheboygan; and two cousins. She was preceded in death by one sister, Martha Kephart, and one brother, Frederick Menke. Peck(sic) of this city, son of Mrs. James W. Pech of this city, in a ceremony on Easter afternoon at 3 o’clock. The Rev. Mr. Sauer, pastor of St. John’s church, read the ceremony. For the ceremony, at which she was attended by her niece, Miss June Hauck, as maid of honor and Mr. Robert J. Ruehl as bridesmaid, the bride wore a trailing colonial gown of white silk marquisette and a veil that fell in points to fingertip length from a coronet of seed pearls. She carried Easter lilies in a loose colonial bouquet. Her attendants wore identical frocks of pale aqua marquisette and carried loose colonial bouquets of jonquils. Mrs. F. J. Asmus of Detroit, the bridegroom’s twin sister, sang “O Perfect Love” as a solo during the ceremony. George W. Pech was his brother’s best man and the ushers were Kurt Williams of Madison, fraternity brother of the groom in Alpha Gamma Rho, and M. A. Mair of West Bend. Mr. Pech was born May 4, 1911, at Manitowoc, son of the late James and Ellen Pech. He married Esther Erler April 11, 1941. Mr. Pech started his career in Milk Products Research in 1929, serving as laboratory technician at the White House Milk Co., Manitowoc for three years. He then established a laboratory at West Bend for the White House Milk Co., where he remained for another three years. After completing his education in Dairy Science at the University of Wisconsin he took a position with Food Machinery Corp., of San Jose in 1941 working in research of machinery for milk products. At the time of his death he was manager of the Milk Machinery Dept. Survivors include his wife, three sons, James, Robert and Daniel, of San Jose, two sisters, Miss Ethel Pech, of Manitowoc and Mrs. F. J. HASKELL PRICKETT February 28, 1910-November 4, 2006 ***** Haskell Georgia Jensen, age 96, passed away November 4, 2006. She had most recently resided at The Heritage, in Scottsdale, Arizona, although Appleton, Wisconsin, had been her home for almost 60 years. She was born February 28, 1910, in Shawano, Wisconsin, to the late John and Sarah (Pendleton) Prickett. Haskell is survived by her son, Bill (Evelyn) Jensen, of Scottsdale, Arizona; her sister, Frances Haroldson, of Gladwin, Michigan; and her grandchildren, Rachel and Sarah Jensen. She is also survived by nieces, Sharon (Paul) Meany of Tempe, Arizona, and Nancy Weidbrauk of Glenwood, New Jersey; nephews, Mike (Kay) Prickett of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and Scott (Jeanette) Prickett of Marshfield, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, and her brother, John (Muriel) Prickett. Haskell was a proud member of the Native American Muncie-Stockbridge Tribe, and was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, where she was crowned Miss Manitowoc, of 1928. She retired from Rich Products in 1978. She was also a longtime member of All Saints Episcopal Church. Haskell and her family would like to thank her close friends and neighbors who have meant so much to her life these past years, as well as the people at both Peabody Manor, in Appleton, Wisconsin, and The Heritage, for their care and compassion. PAUL RAHR March 2, 1911-November 30, 1972/died at Glen Ellyn, Illinois ***** Paul F. Rahr, Dead at 61 Manitowoc—Paul F. Rahr, 61, a former director and vice president for sales of Aluminum Specialty Co., died Wednesday at Glen Ellyn, Ill., of an apparent heart attack. A memorial Mass was offered this Saturday afternoon at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Rahr had been associated with the firm from January, 1946, until he resigned in August, 1963, when he formed a company to package and merchandise a liquid chemical formula designed exclusively as a lime solvent in water systems. Sales Manager A year after his association with the local firm he was appointed Chicago district sales manager and was named general sales manager in August of 1952. In April of 1956 Rahr became vice president for sales and was made a director of the company in March of 1957. He also had been the firm’s sales representative in New York. In addition to his company duties, Rahr served as a member of the public relations committee of Metal Cookware Manufacturers Assn. and Toy Manufacturers Association of the USA Inc. , and on the advisory board of American Research Merchandising Institute. Rahr was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Manitowoc, and a past president of Housewares Club of Chicago. “Man of Year” In 1962 he was selected “Housewares Man of the Year” in recognition of his efforts in furthering the housewares industry by the Southeastern Housewares Club of the USA. The award, in the form of an engraved Brown Jug, was given at the annual housewares show at Chicago. In recent years he was in the real estate business. Mr. Rahr plans to use some of the woodwork trim in the residence in a new home he is erecting northwest of the city. The old Rahr home has not been occupied for years. Paul Rahr reported to the police last night that quantities of lumber have been stolen from the property the past few nights. The business primarily was radio sales and repair. In 1938 the Rahr Appliance Company was organized when Claude P. Allie, now president of the company, joined the firm as vice-president…The company took on electrical contracting, roofing, insulation, sheet meal, heating and other types of home improvement. Although both Miss Shimek and Mr. Mayer are socially prominent young people, the wedding was kept a very quiet affair, the guests being only the families. Funeral services will be at 4:15 p.m. Saturday at Sault Ste. Marie. Ms. Barber was the former Marjorie Vetting, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Vetting, of 824 N. 13th St., Manitowoc. Mr. Barber was a graduate of Milwaukee Downer College and had been director of the rehabilitation center at Aurora, Ill., for the Aurora Chapter of the Association for Crippled Children. She was an enlistee in 1943 into the Waves and took her indoctrination training at the naval training school for WAVES on the campus of Iowa State Teachers College, and was commissioned an ensign. Before separation from the branch of service she had earned the rating of lieutenant. She also held the position of director of occupational therapy at St. Luke Hospital, Chicago. She is survived by her husband, parents, and two sisters, Mrs. Carl (Lucille) Schobelt of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and Mrs. Fred B. (Winifred) Tendick of Milwaukee. JOHN RICHARD VIEREG December 5, 1911-August 26, 1950 ***** Marjorie Sleight, J. Richard Viereg Are Wed Quietly With only the members of their immediate families gathered about them, Miss Marjorie A. Sleight, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Sleight, Sagla, Mich., and J. Richard Viereg, son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Viereg, 815 Clymer pl, were married Saturday morning at 10:30 in the rectory of St. Raphael's church. The Rev. William Mahoney read the service. The bride wore a smart gown of marine blue trimmed in white. Her Princess Marina styled hat and sandals were navy blue and her shoulder corsage was of white gardenias. Miss Jeanette Viereg, a sister of the bridegroom, was the maid of honor. She wore brown accessories and a shoulder bouquet of yellow roses with her gray gown designed in tunic style. George H. Ashby, Rocky River, Ohio, was Mr. Viereg's best man. After a dinner for 12 guests at the Viereg home, the young couple left on a wedding trip to the Mardi Gras in New Orleans, La. Mr. Viereg was graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1933 and is employed with the state highway commission at LaCrosse. He was born in St. Paul. In 1933 he was graduated from the University of Wisconsin and that year became a civil engineer with the Wisconsin highway department. He served until 1941 when he became executive vice president of the Schless Construction Co., Downers Grove. Survivors include his wife, two daughters, Nancy and Lana, both at home; his mother, Mrs. Gertrude Viereg; a brother, Donald, and a sister, Mrs. J. L. Von Gunten, Madison. Funeral services have been tentatively set for Wednesday at 2 in the First Congregational church chapel here. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial park. The body will arrive at the Frautschl funeral home Tuesday and friends may call Tuesday afternoon and night. ***** Funeral services for J. At the ceremony, at the St. Ann Catholic church in Milwaukee, Miss Lorein Wanless, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Wanless, formerly of this city, became the bride of Raymond Neuok, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Neuok, Milwaukee. Attendants were Miss Wilma Seibel, also a former Manitowoc resident, and Howard Wanless, brother of the bride. A reception was held at the Neuok home after the wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Neuok will reside at 2942 North Fifty-fourth street, in Milwaukee. The former is a salesman at Gimbel’s. The bride, a graduate of Lincoln high school, was a member of the art department of the Manitou staff. Death was attributed to a blood clot. The Wanless family lived on North Ninth street in Manitowoc for many years and moved to Milwaukee in 1930. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Raymond P. Westphal, daughter of Mr. and Mr. Emil Westphal, 1934 South 17th street, will wear this afternoon for her wedding to George J. Behringer, of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Behringer, 818 North 9th street. The hour of 4:30 o’clock has been chosen for the ceremony and the Rev. C. H. Phipps, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, will read the nuptial service at the First Reformed church. The bride’s gown, which touches the floor but does not have a train, is topped with a tunic of starched lace. The bride will wear flowers in her hair in lieu of the conventional veil, and she will carry Johanna Hill roses and pompons. Attending as matron of honor is another Westphal daughter, Mrs. A. A. King. She will wear a formal frock of dubonnet crepe topped by a short jacket. Miss Edith Behringer, the bridesmaid, will wear a frock of royal blue velvet. Both maids will carry roses and pompons, and they will wear flowers in their hair. Charles Behringer will be best man to the groom and August Dueno will be groomsman. Immediately after the ceremony at the church the bridal party will go to the Westphal home to receive their guests. The wedding supper will follow the reception. This evening Mr. Behringer and his bride will leave for a honeymoon trip, not announcing their destination. They will be at home after September 21 at 1634 South 10th street.
