'TWAS TWENTY YEARS AGO.
That Mr. and Mrs. John Gens Took Marriage Vows.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. John Gens on South Main street was the
scene of a happy gathering last evening. Yesterday was the
twentieth anniversary of the marriage of the worthy couple and a
celebration in honor of the event had been planned. About thirty
couples were present and everything was merry as the marriage
bells of twenty years ago. Music and dancing made the occasion one
to be long remembered by all who assisted in the commemoration of
the event. Numerous gifts were presented to Mr. and Mrs. Gens and
their cup of joy was filled to o'er flowing. The HERALD trust that
they may live to celebrate the golden anniversay and extends well
wishes.

Wedding Bells
The Johannes-Lueth nuptials were duly solemnized at St. John's Lutheran Church
last Thursday evening and were afterwards royally celebrated at the Turner Hall.
The event was one of the most notable and pleasant that has occurred in this city
for years and pleasant memories thereof, will no doubt linger long in the minds of
many. The hour set for the ceremony that was to unite in marriage the happy couple
was 7:30 o'clock but long before that time had arrived a large crowd had gathered in
the church to witness the interesting rites. Indeed, it is quite likely that never since the
consecration of the church was it so crowded with people. Outside the church and
along the street through which the wedding procession was expected to approach
the church there was an immense throng, eager to see the bride and groom on their
way to the altar and to express by approving glances their goodwill and kind wishes.
Promptly at 7:30 o'clock the great bell in the church tower clanged forth its summons
for the young couple to come to the altar and the wedding party started on their march
to the church. In advance were four groomsmen and four bridesmaids who led the
bridal couple to the altar and behind the bridal couple were their parents and relatives.
When they reached the church, the clanging of the bell ceased and as the party entered,
the organ pealed forth a joyous wedding march which ended as the altar was reached.
The marriage ceremony was most impressively conducted by the pastor, Rev. C. Doehler
and lasted for some time. At its close, the happy young couple were escorted by their
attendants to Turner Hall where a reception was held and afterward a grand ball was
given which was one of the prettiest affairs as everyone said, that was ever enjoyed in
Two Rivers.
Fred C. Johannes, the bridegroom, is the son of Chr. Johannes Esq., and is foreman in
the large sawmill of the Two Rivers Manufacturing company. He is not only very popular
with the men employed under him but with all who know him. His bride is the daughter
of Mrs. H. Kapplemann by her former husband. She is a pretty little lady and has a large
circle of friends. The Chronicle wishes the happy couple a pleasant journey through life.

A SAD SCENE.
Perhaps no scene in our life has ever been so sad to contemplate
as the one which occurred last week. A young man, named Jay Johns,
who married a Miss Morgan from Clark's Mills about two years ago,
lately moved to Kewaunee with his family. The young and happy couple
eight months ago were blessed with a pretty little babe that they
fairly idolized.
Some time ago Jay and his "precious little one" as he familiarly
called his babe, were both taken sick. They were both growing worse
day by day, until last Friday, when his idol breathed her last. The
poor unfortunate wife thought it prudent not to break the news to
her sick husband for awhile at least, as the divulgence of the news
to him might endanger his life. But last Saturday afternoon he called
his wife to his bedside and told her that he was feeling better and
that he had high hopes of a speedy recovery and inquired about the
condition of his little darling. His poor wife unable to bear the
restraint any longer told him that their little treasure had been
borne away by angels to her Father on high.
Poor Jay Johns.
The news was a terrible shock to him. He gave one deep sigh, waved
his last farewell to his wife; turned over on his side and in a few
moments passed away from among the living.
The afflicted wife, the only remnant of a once happy home; has the
sincerest sympathy of the whole community.-Ahnappe Record.

MARRIED
The wedding prank fiend has been getting stung quite considerably lately. Belle
Rand and charley Johnson, by their quiet wedding by Rev. Preuss Sunday evening,
slipped another over on him. Being widely acquainted and deservedly popular, their
wedding has been looked forward to for weeks but the young people succeeded in
maintaining secrecy in regarding their plans and only members of the family were
aware that the ceremony had taken place until Monday. Mr. Johnson is one of the
strikingly successful of the younger business men of the city, his natural aptitude
for attention to business details, and his untiring energy being important factors
in the growth of the J.G. Johnson company. No bride in the city has ever been
accompanied to the altar with more well wishes than Mrs. Johnson, who is a daughter
of the late Edward Rand and a young lady of refinement and winning social graces.
The young couple have taken up their residence on North 8th Street.

MR. AND MRS. H. JOHNSRUD, NEW YORK AVE. WILL HAVE GOOD REASON
TO REMEMBER SILVER WEDDING
Mr. and Mrs. H. Johnsrud, 1504 New York Ave yesterday celebrated
their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary and it was a joyous occasion,
coming on the day when the world war was brought to a close. All but
one of the children were present for the occasion. Clarence, their
eldest son was unable to be here, being on military duty at Newport
News, Va. The friends of Mr. and Mrs. Johnsrud, who gathered to help
them celebrate yesterday insisted that the continual din of the
whistles [note: there are articles about whistles blowing in the
street all day due to armistice] was in celebration of the
anniversary.
In the evening a large number of their friends gathered. One son,
Lester Johnsrud, was slated to leave today for Camp Logan but the
ending of the war resulted in the cancellation of the movement of
men to camp. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hovi, Forestville, and K.N. and
Norman Johnsrud of Kewaunee were present.

SOLDIER BOY WEDS ON THE SLY
Hugo Jonas Returns from Camp & Then Goes on His Honeymoon with Bride
HAPPY UNION OF HEARTS
Couple to Make Home in City
Quietly stealing away to Milwaukee, procuring a special dispensation and then
as quietly wed, are the incidents in connection with a ceremony which on Tuesday
united Miss Elizabeth Rosinsky and Hugo Jonas both of this city for weal or woe
through life. No intimation of the intentions of the couple were given and although
the marriage was a foregone conclusion, friends of the couple did not expect the
sudden announcement by the groom who with his bride returned to the city on the
same day that the marriage was celebrated and told of the event to a group of
acquaintances.
Mr. Jonas who is a member of Company H, attended Camp in company with his
command and returned to this city with it after the week at Camp Moore. He is a
salesman in the employ of the O. Torrison Company and securing an extension of
his vacation one week, left for the Cream City with his fiancee and they were married
before a justice there. Returning to Manitowoc he broke the news to friends and then
with his bride left for Mishicott to spend a brief honeymoon at his former home. The
couple will return to this city on Monday and the groom will resume his occupation at
the O. Torrison Co. store. They will go to housekeeping at once.
Mrs. Jonas is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Rosinsky residing on North Eighth
Street and has always made his home in this city where she is well and favorably known
by a large number of friends. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Jonas of Mishicott
and has been a resident of this city for some past and is recognized as one of the most
promising young men here, his occupation as an employee of the Torrison store being
sufficient to make him many friends both in a business and social way.

ALONZO JONES DEAD.
Son of the Benjamin Jones Founder of Manitowoc.
This morning's Chicago Tribune had the following notice:
Alonzo DeForrest Jones, Chicago, who died on Jan. 19,
was buried yesterday at Oakwoods. Funeral services were
conducted at his late residence, 47?8 Prairie avenue, by
Dr. Walter Delafield of the Church of the Transfiguration.
The palbearers (sic) were Thomas Fitzgerald, Henry T.
Blake, William Dogget, Henry E. Pierpont, George Bell,
and John T. Ryan. Mr. Jones was born in Chicago in 1835.
He was a cousin of Fernando Jones. He was prominent in
the early lumber trade and founded the town of Manitowoc,
Wis.
The Tribune is in error when it says Alonzo Jones was the
founder of Manitowoc. That honor belongs to his father
Benjamin Jones. But Mr. Alonzo Jones spent much of his
early life in this city and will be well remembered by the
older residents here.

MARRIED:
Miss Mabel Emilie Pritchard, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J.F. Pritchard of this
city, was united in marriage to Rev. D.C. Jones, former pastor of the First
Presbyterian church of the city, at 12 o'clock, p.m. last Thursday, at the home
of the bride's parents at the corner of North Eighth and Park streets. Rev. Oliver
C. Johnson, present pastor of the Presbyterian church, perfumed the nuptial
ceremony. The home was prettily decorated for the event, which was a quiet
affair, the bridal pair being unattended and only near relatives being present.
The ceremony over, a wedding dinner was served; and at 2:55 p.m. the couple
departed for Chicago. From there they went to London, Ohio, where Rev. Jones
has accepted a charge.
The bride is a graduate of the North Side high school, of the Milwaukee normal
school, and of Wellesley college. She was a member of the Clio club and of the
Lois society.
The groom was the predecessor of Rev. Johnson in the pastorate of the Presbyterian
church, which charge he held for nearly four years. He was very popular, but
tendered his resignation because he needed a rest to regain his health, which had
been failing for some time.
The numerous friends of the couple will wish them a long, happy, unclouded
married life.

A Wedding in High Life
We have hardly been in the city long enough to get posted in society matters and we
have therefore to copy from the Chronicle the following notice which is fully endorsed
by the people of Manitowoc.
Last Thursday evening a large number of invited guests assembled at the residence of
Mr. and Mrs. T.C. Shove, Manitowoc to witness the ceremonies to join in the festivities
connected with the wedding of their daughter, Lucy to Frank P. Jones, a promising young
businessman of this city. The occasion was an unusually pleasant one, as the friends of
both the contracting parties are numerous and the congratulations showered upon them
were hearty and genuine. The bride is a handsome and amiable young lady and has received
what few ladies can boast of -- a good, sensible and practical business education under the
tuition of her father, in his banking business and while all her friends wish her success and
happiness in the future there are few who doubt her as capable of winning the one as she
is deserving of the other.
Frank is well known through-out the county and very popular. There are none who are the
least acquainted with him who have any fear that he will fail to secure his share of what the
future may have in store. With kind thanks for being remembered on this happy occasion,
the Tribune extends its congratulations. The Rev. M.V. Averill, rector of the St. James
Episcopal Church, officiated and the ceremony of the Episcopal church was adhered to.

GEORGE JONES AND BRIDE COME HERE
MARRY AT MANITOWOC AND THEN EVADE FRIENDS BY TAKING
AN APPLETON TRAIN
Of the wedding of George W. Jones, who was formerly employed in the local office of
the Jones Lumber company, and Miss Aimee Higgins, the Manitowoc News says:
In the presence of over 100 guests that assembled at the home of the bride's parents,
711 N. Main street, Miss Aimee Higgins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Higgins,
and George Wright Jones, were united in marriage at 6:30 New Year's evening, the
wedding proving to be a society event of no small importance. In the list of guests were
over 50 from outside the city who witnessed the ceremony, which was performed by
Rev. E. Talbot rogers of Fond du Lac.
The Higgins home was prettily decorated for the occasion, with palms, ferns, cut flowers,
smilax and lilies of the valley. The music was furnished by an orchestra composed of
Profs. Kaiser and George Urban of this city, J. Vilim of Green Bay, and Louis Urban
of Kaukauna. The regular Episcopal ring ceremony was gone through with. Miss Eva
Higgins was maid of honor and wore a gown of pink mousseline, while the four bridesmaids,
Miss Helen Higgins of this city, Florence Harwood of Lincoln, Neb., Helen Hunt of Neenah
and Grace Pitchard of this city, wore gowns of light green, while little Geraldine Higgins
of Neenah, the ring bearer, wore white. The groom was attended by his brother, Ted
Jones of Minneapolis, as best man.
The ceremony began at 6:30, the groom, accompanied by his best man, and Rev. Rogers
entering from the east room, and as the orchestra played the wedding march the four
bridesmaids came down the stairway carrying ribbons and followed by Geraldine Higgins,
the ring bearer. The bride, Miss Aimee Higgins, wearing a gown of satin with a train and
trimmed with Princess lace, accompanied by her father, followed. The wedding ceremony
was performed under a band of ferns and palms. Following the wedding there was an
elaborate wedding luncheon served, Mrs. Harth of Marinette being the cateress.
Mr. and Mrs. Jones succeeded in getting away from the wedding guests, in a hack, and
got to the C. & N. W. in time to catch the Ashland Limited train for Appleton. From there
they go to Milwaukee, today and will take a honeymoon trip to Chicago, Memphis, and
St. Louis for two weeks after which they will go to Forest City, Ark., to reside. The bride
is a daughter of Thomas Higgins, president of the Manitowoc & Northern Traction company,
and was born and educated in Neenah. After graduating from the Neenah high school the
bride attended Ferry Hall at Lake Forest. She removed here with her parents, six years ago,
and has since made her home here. She has been prominent in the younger social set of this
city.
George Wright Jones is the youngest son of Mrs. Frank Jones and was born and educated
in Manitowoc. He was a graduate of the North Side high school, and was a prominent athlete
of the school, playing on the foot ball team, and being captain and quarter back his last two
years. Entering the University of Wisconsin, he pursued his education there for two years
and was prominent in athletics at the varsity, playing quarter on the Badger team one season.
For the past year he has been located in Forest City, Ark., being identified with the G.W.
Jones Lumber Co. which has large interests there.
