LEIBINGER: Johann m: 23 Dec. 1849 by Lor Petersen, J.P. (co. mar. index v.1) to: Odelia Camel FOUND DROWNED.-On Monday, the body of a man was discovered in the water, at the foot of Franklin street, which on being taken to land proved to be that of John N. Leibinger, a former resident of the town of Gibson. Some four weeks ago he came to this city and stopped for the night with Mr. Chas. Winton. About two o'clock in the morning he got up and went out, and from that time until his body was found floating in the lake nothing was heard or known of what had became of him. It is supposed that the rash deed was committed during a temporary fit of insanity, although it is possible that his death may have been the result of an accident while walking near the river in the dark. Leonard, and Miss Martha L. Gould, all of Manitowoc. Sensible to the last, James you shall have the credit we have always considered you entitled to, that of being a brave man. If your three years' service was not enough to prove your valor, your present "enlistment for life" certainly is. But now we think of it, wasn't it a little strange that you should get married just at the commencement of "Court week?" And then to go and surprise us as you did? We had always expected to dance at your wedding, and there is nary a dance, while you snap your fingers at us and go dancing over Lake Michigan's bosom with your fair bride in an ecstasy of delight! We came near wishing you might get awful sea-sick, but when we came to taste that cake we felt differently and wished you a pleasant journey, a happy time and a safe return to the classic shades of Manitowoc where you may enjoy long life and see many branches on your olive tree. LEVENHAGEN: Henry From Der Nord Westen, 30 Sept. 1909: On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Henry Levenhagen, eminent residents of our city, celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Their actual anniversary of 23 September fell on Thursday, but to allow all family members to attend, the celebration was moved to Sunday. It was a large gathering of sons, daughters, grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. Only one son was unable to attend, Henry, who lives across the world in Alaska. The joyous party was held in their home on South Main Street, which the couple has called their residence for the past 26 years. Mr. Levenhagen, who learned horticulture in Germany, came to Manitowoc in 1856, then a place just beginning. Naturally, there was no opportunity for founding a plant nursery here, so he moved to St. Louis and established one nearby. In 1859 he was married in St. Louis and might have remained there if the Civil War hadn’t broken out and he did not wish to remain in a slave state. He came back to Manitowoc and established a nursery here. Since then he has always resided here and been busy with his business until this very day. 5 children were born to the couple, of whom 4 are still living. His son Hermann of Milwaukee came here with his own son Arthur and the latter’s little daughter, together with all their families. The daughter, Mrs. W.J. Schaefer of Milwaukee, and family also were here. Gus Levenhagen lives here and naturally attended the celebration with his family. In addition, a whole host of other relatives and friends were in attendance. Both Mr. and Mrs. Levenhagen are 73 years old, but sound of body and mentally alert, with the best outlook for celebrating their Diamond Anniversary.
