Graduate law school JUDGE OSCAR M. TORRISON Judge Oscar M. Torrison of Evanston, Ill., passed away at the Deaconess Hospital in Chicago Wednesday morning of pneumonia and complications. He was born in Manitowoc, August 28, 1861 at the Torrison homestead t Fifth & York Street. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. O. Torrison, pioneer merchant of this city. Mr. Torrison attended the public schools of Manitowoc and was a graduate of the class of 1878 of the Northside High School. After graduating, he attended Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, from which he graduated in 1881. He then attended the Law School, University of Iowa, graduating in 1882 and then attended Law School, Columbia University of New York, graduating in 1884. He was married Feb. 27, 1889 to Miss Ida Mickelson of Chicago, daughter of the late Captain and Mrs. H. Mickelson. He is survived by his widow, two daughters and one son, Miss Margaret A. Torrison of Saranac, New York; Mr. Osuld Torrison of Chicago and Miss Helen of Evanston, Ill; one sister, Mrs. Charles Stewart and four brothers, Dr. George A. Torrison,, Aaron J. Torrison, Norman G. Torrison, all of Chicago and William L. Torrison of this city. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister, namely Thomas E. Torrison and Gustave Torrison of this city and a Rev. I. B. Torrison of Decorah, Iowa and Mrs. Inanda Torrison Bredeson of Stoughton. Mr. Oscar Torrison held many positions of trust and importance, not only in Chicago and Evanston, but in other places as well. He was very prominent in civic, social and church circles in Evanston and Chicago and was a very active member of the St. Paul Lutheran church. At the time of his death, Mr. Torrison was practicing law in Chicago with offices at 10 South LaSalle Street. Prior to this Mr. Torrison was Judge of Municipal Court and later Judge of Circuit Court of Cook County, which judgeships he held for nearly twenty years. He was also president of the O. Torrison company of this city since 1922 and was a frequent visitor here. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Chicago, Rev. George Gullixson officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery. It is difficult to speak sincerely of the death of a man like Judge Oscar Torrison without employing some of the language to which eulogists of the dead more conventionally than sincerely, are often given. Judge Torrison was such an outstanding figure in the life of Chicago, his qualities of citizenship so well-known and appreciated that praise of him which might ordinarily be regarded as extravogent will be generally approved as nothing more than his due. It is the statement of a recognized fact to say that he stood in the front rank of his profession. His leadership as a lawyer was freely acknowledged. The death of Judge Torrison removes a figure in the public life of Chicago who honored the bench by his official conduct during his twenty years of service. He possessed a judicial temperament above the average, found pleasure in the routine of court procedure and deliberation, yet was one of the most companionable of men. He was a gentleman within the highest definition of the term. He was a well versed lawyer a man of strict integrity though not a man with what Edmund Burke termed "the cold neutrality" of an impartial judge. He was a two fisted patriot. To hi is profession was only less sacred than his country. He was a level-headed, high-minded American. Manitowoc is justly proud to have developed such a prominent character. Mr. and Mrs. Torrison were wedded in this city and have always made their home here. Mrs. Torrison was formerly Miss Louise Koehler, daughter of the late John Koehler, one of the city's prominent business men of early days. Mr. Torrison is local manager for the Western Union Telegraph Co. and has a host of friends who cherish his friendship. Mr. and Mrs. Torrison proved royal hosts and the guests departed with regret that the evening had passed so soon.
