Page: 028 Bernice H. Kutz: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice Winnetka Talk (IL) - November 6, 1997 Deceased Name: Bernice H. Kutz Bernice Higgins Kutz, who died last month in Rhinelander, Wis., just before her 91st birthday, was one of the last survivors of her generation of a North Shore pioneer family. Her great-great-great-grandfather John Happ was the first judge between Chicago and Waukegan, and was instrumental in naming this area New Trier Township after the city he had left behind in Germany. In the mid-1800s John Happ owned large sections of Winnetka's lakefront property before moving to Northfield. Mrs. Kutz's great-great-great-grandfather Benjamin Emerson Emerson used part of his fortune from the 1849 California Gold Rush to buy a 640-acre section of land along the Evanston-Skokie border. The Emersons had originally emigrated from England to Massachusetts, and several of her ancestors served under General George Washington in the American Revolution. The Higgins branch of Mrs. Kutz's family were early settlers in the Lake Forest and Hubbard Woods area in the 1830s. Her father, Charles Higgins, was an executive with the North Western Railroad, and part of his duties involved checking, in person, on gold freight shipments out of Cripple Creek, Colo., at the turn of the century. As a child she was taken along on combination business-pleasure trips to the mining area in an era when the west was still a frontier. She often reminisced about how train passengers were advised not to sit in the last car, because gamblers often got into shoot-outs over card games. Mrs. Kutz was preceded in death by her husband, Albin. She is survived by six children: (private); 21 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.
