Brief History of Manitowoc County including Shoto 1831 to 1900
*1831-Menominee tribe sells to the United States all the territory
including Manitowoc County east of Green Bay, Fox River, Lake
Winnebago and the Milwaukee River.
*1835-Survey of Menominee Purchase of 1831 completed and land opened for
settlement. Land cost 48 cents to $1.25 per acre.
*1836-Chester Ford purchases 3-80 acre tracts of land for $350.00 in
Green Bay. {A.M. Burnham is "squatter" on Ford's land.}
*1837-Henry Stringham and A.M. Burnham become partners and purchase land
from Chester Ford and complete sawmill. Company called Neshoto
Lumber Company. They purchase in all approximately 5,000 acres in
Town of Two Rivers.
*1837-Population of Manitowoc County-180

*1837-Financial Panic
*1838-The whole county is named Conroe County, after Jacob Conroe, and
organized for county purposes.
*1839-A road from the mouth of Two Rivers to Neshoto was laid out.
*1840-Population of "Conroe County" -240
*1841-Neshoto Lumber Company filed for bankruptcy
*1842-Population of Conroe County-263
*1843-County is divided into four road districts
*1844-County Commissioners grant five tavern licenses to five individuals
at $5.00 a piece.
1- Neshoto, if applied for , 1- each at mouth of Manitowoc and Two
Rivers, 1- at Manitowoc Rapids,(fifth one was being held)
*1845-Petition for road from mouth of the Manitowoc to mills in Neshoto,
from Neshoto to Mishicot.
*1846-Population of county-629
*1847-Population of county-1258
*1848-Jacob King purchases 57 acres to lay out a village called
"Kingsville"
*1849-The first school meeting was held in District No.3, which included
Neshoto, at the house of Alvin Raymond.
*1849-Renamed Manitowoc County, divided into four towns: Two Rivers,
Manitowoc, Manitowoc Rapids and Meeme. The first Town of Two Rivers
town meeting was at the house of Sebastian Boldus.
*1849-Board of Supervisors met for the purpose of viewing and laying out
a Neshoto road to intersect with the Mishicot road at some feasible
point.
*1850-Population of County-3,702
*1850-The taxable real and personal property in the Town of Two Rivers
was $69,089.60
*1851-Jacob King and Alvin Raymond were appointed to build a bridge
across the Neshoto River.
*1852-Town of Mishicot separated from the Town of Two Rivers.
*1855-Population of County-13,018 , Village of Two Rivers chose H.H.
Smith to be President.
*1858-Jacob King lays out the village of Kingsville.
*1859-Jacob King builds flouring mill in Kingsville.
*1860-Population of County 22,416
*1861-Township system of schools abolished. The office of County
Superintendent of Schools created with B.J. VanValkenburg being the
first one.
*1862-Cooper and Jones purchase mills from Taylor and Pendletons widows.
*1865-Population of County-26,742
*1868-Jacob King leaves Kingsville, destination unknown.
*1870-Population of County-33,364
*1870-Manitowoc County has 12 steam sawmills, 22 water driven mills,
5 flouring mills
*1875-Population of County-38,456
*1878-Two Rivers Village becomes a city, M.Malory is Mayor. Population is
over 2,000
*1878-First Town of Two Rivers meeting held after the division, held at
the house of Herman Goedjen. Officers elected for town were:
Chairman- Henry Goedjen, Supervisor- Carl Schlundt, Fred Stueck,
Treasurer - Diedrich Dicke, Clerk- Fred Schwartz.
*1880-Post Office established at Shoto-August Gehling Post Master. Name
changed from Neshoto to Shoto.
*1880-Population of Manitowoc County-37,506
*1881-Reportedly very rough winter, high snow drifts and no mail for days.
*1885-Population of Manitowoc County-38,692
*1884-Mill from Kingsville moved to Neshoto, saloon followed shortly
after, named Neshoto House
*1888-Saloon license $200.00 for cities and incorporated villages,
$100.00 for towns
*1890-Population of Manitowoc County- 37,831, Town of Two Rivers-1,108
*1900-Population of Manitowoc County- 42,261, Town of Two Rivers-1,087
