1859: Something To Be Thankful For.-We now receive Milwaukee papers on the second day after publication. Thanks to the Wisconsin Stage Company, who, we understand, will hereafter run their coaches direct to Milwaukee in one day and a half. This will be the cheapest and most comfortable route for travelers during the winter months. They have stocked the route with good teams, warm coaches, and careful drivers, and we trust our people will appreciate the convenience by patronising the line. The Manitowoc Pilot, Manitowoc, Wis. Friday, December 16, 1859 P. 3 ******** TRAVELER'S DIRECTORY. STAGES. For Fond Du Lac.-Stage leaves for above place via Chilton, every morning at 8 1/2 o'clock. For Menasha.-Mail leaves every Friday noon for Menasha. For Two Rivers.-Stage leaves every day at 4 A.M. For Sheboygan.-Stage leaves every morning for Sheboygan at 5 o'clock. WISCONSIN STAGE CO. AND ITS CONNECTIONS.- Stages leave Two Rivers at 4 o'clock A.M. every day (except Sundays) via Manitowoc and Sheboygan to Milwaukee in 1 1/2 days and Chicago in two Days, with good warm and comfortable Stages and Bufallo Robes for the comfort of the Passengers. T. Windate Agent, Manitowoc, L.M. Philips, Agent Two Rivers. The Daily Tribune, Manitowoc, Wis. Friday, January 7, 1859 P. 3 ******** Our Fire Department.-We learn that since the arrival of the new Engine for Co. No. 2, the "Boys" of No. 1 are making extra exertions, and filing up their vacant ranks with new members. Our town now possesses two first class Engines and Companies, and with a proper feeling of friendship existing between the members of both, they will be a great benefit to Manitowoc. The only rivalry should be a spirit of doing good. Their motto should be-"In Union there is Strength." The Manitowoc Pilot, Manitowoc, Wis. Friday, December 16, 1859 P. 3

1937: VIE FOR OLD CITY RECORDS State and Local Historical Groups Ask Council For Books Evidently musty old city records stored for years in basement vaults at the city hall, have some historical value. The State Historical society and the Manitowoc County Historical society are vying for possession of the records, which will probably be discarded when the city hall addition is completed. Both requests were referred to the legislative committee of the council Monday night. Letters were read from Emil Baensch and Ralph Plumb, urging that the old records be sent to the State Historical society at Madison. This course was also urged by Stanley J. Pierce, who has been at work for more than a year on a Historical Records survey here. John G. Johnson, president of the County Historical society expressed surprise that two charter members of that society should urge turning over old records to the state. He felt that the Manitowoc society should be given first pick. He added there should be plenty of old receipts and data for both societies. "The Manitowoc society has one of the best collections of marine photographs and clippings in the United States." Mr Johnson said. "There are 12,000 exhibits in this department alone."
