BLANCHE PECH INJURIES SHE RECEIVED IN CRASH FATAL Mrs. Joseph M. Pech Jr. Was Injured When Car Was Forced Off Road Injuries suffered when the car driven by her husband was forced off the highway near Kellnersville early Monday morning caused the death at the hospital last night of Mr. Joseph M. Pech Jr. She was 44 years of age. The fatal accident came at the end of a day of reunions at which Mr. and Mrs. Pech, who reside on a farm in the town of Kossuth, had been guests of relatives and friends on the occasion of their 20th wedding anniversary. Mr. Pech escaped with cuts and bruises. A maid, Olive Worel, returning to the farm home with the Pechs also escaped serious injuries. According to Mr. Pech a car drove up behind him just before he met an oncoming car on County Highway H, a short distance off Highway 141. He sought to avoid the accident but one of the cars forced him off the highway and the car turned over on its side to the adjoining field. Mrs. Pech sustained fractured vertebrae and a severed spinal cord and __ _____ to the hospital here. Seek Identity Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Cizek came here from Petersburg, Virginia when advised of the accident and Mrs. Pech recognized them before she lapsed into unconsciousness. Since the accident county authorities have been checking in an effort to learn the identity of the drivers of the two other cars which failed to stop after the Pech car went off the highway and turned over. The maiden name of the deceased was Blanche Cizek and she was born in Kossuth in 1889. Twenty-eight years ago she accompanied her parents to Virginia and eight years later returned here to wed Joseph Pech Jr. They took up their home on the present homestead farm. EDWIN PECH (d. 1929) ONE DEAD AS AUTO HITS COUPLE YOUNG HUSBAND KILELD AND WIFE IS INJURED Appalling Tragedy Claims Life of Edwin Pech on Washington street Saturday Night In one of the most appalling traffic accidents of years, in the downtown section Saturday night, Edwin Pech, 21, was fatally injured and his wife, Florence, 19, a bride of but a few months, sustained serious bruises, when they were run down by an automobile occupied by six Oshkosh high school students on Washington street. Mr. Pech died at the Holy Family hospital three hours after the accident from internal injuries and skull fracture. Mrs. Pech, who escaped with slight injuries, was able to leave the hospital today. The accident happened on Washington street, between Eleventh and Twelfth streets, shortly after 9 o’clock and was witnessed by many automobilists and pedestrians on the street. Mr. and Mrs. Pech were taken to the hospital where the husband died at 11:45. (snip) Were En Route to Movie Mr. and Mrs. Pech were on their way to attend a picture showing at the Mikadow theatre, the young husband driving out into the country during the early evening, so that his wife could accompany him to witness the performance. They parked their light coupe about 40 feet west of the intersection of Eleventh and Washington streets shortly after 9 o’clock and were walking across the street when the accident occurred. The two were crossing in traffic, which at that time is heavy on Washington street and had halted in the lane, when struck. Mr. Pech was carried fifty feet by the impact while his wife was thrown ten feet by impact of his body. It was said that the boys had been observed by a number of people about the city as they paraded about the city streets with their collegiate flivver during the day, were driving east on Washington street and were passing cars at the time of the accident. The street was crowded with cars as many persons were returning to their homes after witnessing first performance at downtown show houses. Owing to the fact that rain was falling at the time, the reflection on the black preparation placed on the street to cover the holes made when the street car tracks were removed, prevented the driver from seeing the young couple as they stood in the center of the street, it was claimed. Wife Thrown to Side Immediately after striking the husband, the car struck Mrs. Pech and hurled her through the air for a distance of about eight or ten feet. Principal C.E. Bray of the Valders high school, who witnessed the accident, declared. Bray was entering his car, parked in front of the Park View Tavern, and said that after hearing the sound of the collision he turned about to see Mrs. Pech thrown in his direction. He picked her up and removed her to an automobile near the scene and she was taken to the hospital. After the husband was extricated from the bottom of the machine at the intersection, he was removed to the waiting ambulance and rushed to the hospital. An examination revealed that he was suffering from internal hurts and from skull fracture and death occurred at 11:45 o’clock. Is Kossuth Youth Edwin Pech, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Pech of the town of Kossuth, was born in Kossuth on January 21, 1908 and made his home with his parents until coming to Manitowoc to secure employment at the White House Condensery here. CHARLES PEITHER CHAS. PIETHERS(sic) STRICKEN AS HE RESTS TODAY Retired Workman was Employed By Goods Co. For 20 Years; No Known Relatives Stricken by an attack of heart failure as he was seated in a chair perusing a newspaper at the Northwestern hotel this morning, Charles Piethers, 68, retired, and for twenty years an employee of the Aluminum Goods Mfg. Co. of this city, succumbed before medical aid could be summoned. Piethers had not been ill and was in his apparent health this morning. His death was a shock to associates and friends at the hotel. Piethers was 68 years of age and came here from Germany more than twenty years ago, securing work at the Goods plant which he continued up until about six years ago when he retired. He spent most of his time about the hotel where he had made his home for years and was well liked by all who knew him. He made a practice of reading the papers each morning and had been engaged in that task for some time when it was noticed that he was not breathing and investigation revealed that he was dead. A physician was summoned but nothing could be done. Death was due to heart failure. No Known Relatives. Piethers has no known relatives here and in America and it is not known whether he has relatives in Germany or not. He had never referred to his family and is not believed to have ever married. Piethers was found dead at 11 o’clock and the body was removed to the Vogelsang Undertaking rooms from where the funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock. ANTON J. PEKULIK Yards Workman Died Soon After current Hit Him (photo) Anton Pekulik, 44-year-old Manitowoc Ship Building company employe, who was electrocuted while at work in the yards Thursday afternoon, was dead only seconds after 2,300 volts passed through his body, Dr. Gerald Rau said today. Pekulik, an unmarried man, had been at work with several other members of a shipyard labor gang moving huge timbers with the aid of a Speedcrane in the southwest corner of the yard when the fatal accident happened about 2 p.m. According to fellow workers, a steel cable with tongs at the end hung directly down from crane's 100-foot boom. Pekulik was said to have had his hands on the tongs in securing them around one of the timers to be moved. As the boom swung around into position the vertical cable accidentally came in contact with the Wisconsin Public Service corporation's 4,000 volt power line which runs along the railroad right of way at the south edge of the yards. ......... When Dr. Rau arrived shortly before 2:30 he said he was unable to detect any heartbeat in the man and arrangements were made to remove him in the Meihsner ambulance to the Holy Family hosptial. Firemen continued their resuscitation efforts without let-up in the ambulance while enroute to the hosptial. Pekulik was placed in the iron lung at the hosptial and efforts to revive him were continued until 4 o'clock, the doctor said. No Inquest Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner, announced there would be no inquest. ......... Funeral services for Mr. Pekulik will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Leschke funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. He was born in this city in 1904 and always lived here.
