ERNI STATFELD Erni Statfeld, age 93, of Felician Village, died November 16, 2017 at St. Mary's Home. Erni was born in a taxicab in Berlin, Germany March 23, 1924 "because my mother, a nurse, thought she knew how to time a birth to happen at the hospital. She was wrong." Her father was a salesman throughout Europe and her mother, Christiane, was a Bavarian Lutheran who converted to her father's Judaism. They lived prosperously in Berlin, where she attended public school and attended both Lutheran and Jewish religious classes. In high school she learned the trade of dressmaking and design, which provided her with career skills that helped her to survive concentration camp and then working after she came to America. As a Holocaust Survivor she experienced persecution after Hitler came to power in 1933. Her father and 90-year-old grandmother disappeared after interrogation by the Nazis about 1941. She was in a Berlin work camp for three years until liberation in May 1945. During the first year after liberation she worked for the secretary of United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) in Berlin and helped many refugees (primarily displaced Polish) to emigrate to America. She then "put myself on a ship to America" in 1946, met her future husband Bernard Statfeld on board the ship, married him in New York City on February 23, 1947, and became a US citizen January 24, 1949. She worked as dress designer and dressmaker in New York City and served as a union steward. Motivated by her experiences with her teen-age son's descent into drug abuse and schizophrenia, she received her High School Equivalency Diploma in 1977, attended Empire State College in 1982, and graduated from Hunter College with a Masters in Psychiatric Social Work in 1985. As an intake worker for Jewish Social Services, she admitted and worked with the mentally ill in groups. Upon retirement in 1993 and move to Felician Village in Manitowoc, she served as a volunteer at Felician Village and read with students at Jefferson Elementary School and Washington Junior High School. She shared some of her experiences with friends at Felician Village and with students from Washington Junior High School. In 2010 she dictated her Holocaust experiences over the phone with students from D.C. Everest Area Schools in Weston, Wisconsin. Their research led to her 11-page memoir in a book about 72 Wisconsin witnesses and survivors of the Holocaust. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Christiane Krodel Grunwald, her husband Bernard Statfeld, and two sons Erwin Dennis Statfeld and Elliott Donald Statfeld. Graveside services will be held Monday, November 20 at 11 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Rabbi Moishe Steigmann of Cnesses Israel Temple in Green Bay will officiate. Friends may enter the cemetery at the Northwest entrance on Michigan Avenue. The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, is assisting with funeral arrangements. JOHN STAUDT Death Friday, following a long illness, of John A. Staudt, a well-known resident of our city. The deceased was born 10 September 1853 in Town Kossuth and grew up on his father's farm there. After leaving school he learned the cabinetmaking craft which he worked at for many years. About 28 years ago he came to Manitowoc and took over a rooming house which has since operated under the name Staudt House. Mr. Staudt was a beloved and esteemed man throughout the entire city. He served one term as County Supervisor from the 1st Ward, and at the time of his death was City Weights and Measures Officer. His funeral was held Monday afternoon at the local city cemetery under the direction of the local Eagles Lodge with the participation of the choral groups "Freier Sängerbund" and "Concordia" and the mutual insurance society "Germania", of which the deceased was a member. He leaves his widow and 5 children along with a stepson, as well as his elderly mother, 4 brothers and 5 sisters. Der Nord Westen, 14 Jan. 1909 ******* There passed away Friday in Manitowoc in the person of John Staudt a man of the kind that we have been taught to believe is typical of the German race. His own common sense would resent imputing to him the capacity of a Bismark but in his own small sphere he showed the trait attributed to his people of getting things done while making no fuss. Conservative and practical without being stagnant he was a successful business man. His stern probity was so manifest that his fellow citizens turned instinctively to him when semi-public funds were to be handled, and made him many times improvement fund treasurer and for many years the same official for the County Fair and custodian of Democratic campaign funds. He was born in Kossuth, this count, 53 years ago and has been in business in the city for nearly 30 years. For about a year Mr. Staudt had been failing. He was afflicted with kidney and heart trouble. The deceased is survived by his wife, four sons, one daughter and a stepson, an aged mother, four brothers and five sisters. The children are Walter of Duluth, Mrs. James Spalsbury of Sawyer, and Lester, John, Jr., and Elmer of this city. His stepson, Arthur Haukohl, also resides here. The sisters are Mrs. F W. Meyer and Mrs. Jos. Biehler of this city, Mrs. J. P. Armitage of Seymour, Mrs. Wm. Lange of Clintonville, Miss Lizzie Staudt,a sister at St. Benedict convent in Missouri. Willinger, all members of the Order of Eagles. Interment was at Evergreen cemetery. CARL P. STAUSS (d. 1911) CRUSHED TO DEATH Karl (sic) Stauss, aged 18 years, died Wednesday evening at Emergency hospital in Milwaukee where he was removed after sustaining severe injuries when he was crushed between an elevator and the ceiling at the Western Hat company, where he was employed. He is a son of Max Stauss of this city, and his sister, Miss Rose Stauss, is a teacher in the First Ward school here. The body will be brought here for burial. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, November 23, 1911 pg. 8 ******** LIFE CRUSHED OUT ON LIFT OF AN ELEVATOR Carl Stauss, Manitowoc boy, Meets Tragic End DIES ON WAY TO CITY HOSPITAL Caught between the lift of a freight elevator and the iron door of the covering, Carl Stauss, a former Manitowoc boy, was fatally injured at Milwaukee Wednesday night and died in an ambulance while being rushed to the emergency hospital in hope of saving his life. Stauss is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Max Stauss and up to three years ago resided in this city with his parents and was a student at the First Ward School. The body will be brought to this city for burial, the funeral being held Saturday. Stauss was employed by the Western Hat Company at its Milwaukee offices and store and was leaving his work for the city at the time of the fatal accident. he had been in the basement and stepped onto the elevator which is one of the kind leading from the basement to the street and used for freight only. the iron doors covering the elevator had been fastened down, a fact of which Stauss was not aware and when he reached the doors and attempted to push them up he was unable to do so and not being able to stop the elevator, he was crushed to death when the elevator pressed his head and body against the iron doors. Fellow employees who heard cries of the boy, rushed to the elevator shaft and pulled the reverse chain, sending the lift to the basement floor again. Stauss was taken from the elevator unconscious and it was evident that he had been seriously, if not fatally, injured. The ambulance was called and the boy was rushed to the hospital but before the hospital was reached, the injured lad was dead. The body was taken to the morgue and later removed to the home of the mother of Stauss at 689 1/2 First St. A pathetic scene occurred at the hospital when Mrs. Stauss, who had been notified by telephone of the accident and removal of her son to the hospital, insisted upon seeing the body of her son. Mrs. Stauss swooned and it was more than an hour before physicians could restore her sufficiently so that she could be taken to her home. News of the death of Mr. Stauss reached here Wednesday night in a message to relatives and Milwaukee papers give details of the accident. Stauss was 18 years of age and made his home with his mother at Milwaukee and had been employed by the Western Hat company for some time past. The accident happened at 5:40 Wednesday night as the boy was planning to leave his work for the day. Besides his mother at Milwaukee, Stauss is survived by his father, who has made his home at the Holy Family Hospital in this city, one sister, Miss Rose Stauss, a teacher in the city school here and one brother, Max Stauss of Chicago, formerly employed with O. Torrison Co. The body will be brought here this evening or tomorrow and funeral arrangements will be announced later. Death of young Stauss will be a painful shock to friends of the family and to many young friends who knew him here. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Thurs. FRIEDERIKA LOUISE STAUSS Mrs. Friedericke Stauss, widow of the late F.X. Stauss, died on Friday, 21 July. Der Nord Westen, 27 July 1876 ******* [Mrs. Stauss/bur. 07-23-1876] ******* Within a week past death has again spread its dark wings and visited our community carrying away to that great unknown country from whence no travelers returneth, three of its weary pilgrims. On Friday of last week, Mrs. Fredericke Stauss died at the residence of Mr. John Schuette, aged 60 years. Mrs. Stauss was the step-mother of Mrs. J. Schuette and of Robert and Max Stauss, a woman of rare excellence both of heart and mind. Her mission in life seemed to be one of love and patient labor. Her children, though not her own, clung to her with an affection as fervent and real as if they were indeed her own flesh and blood. Her departure from life leaves a void in their hearts that time can never fill. May she rest sweetly and peacefully in her endless slumber and the earth rest lightly above her silent heart. EMMA STECHMESSER SHORT ILLNESS TAKES MRS. H. STECHMESSER The grim hand of Death exacted a heavy toll at the Herman Stechmesser home, 727 North Twelfth street early last evening when Mrs. Stechmesser was suddenly taken after a short illness of less than two weeks. Death came entirely unexpected though Mrs. Stechmesser had been troubled with heart complications for a short time, and her passing is mourned by a wide circle of friends her kindly and loving disposition had acquainted. Mrs. Stechmesser, nee Ladwig, was born in the Town of Manitowoc, a short distance north of this city and spent the early years of her life there, later removing to Two Rivers with her parents where she grew to womanhood. Upon her marriage to Herman Stechmesser in 1898, the couple removed to this city, taking residence at 727 North Twelfth street where they have since lived and where Mrs. Stechmesser was summoned. AUGUST STEFFEN GOES FISHING UP RIVER; LOSES LIFE IN FALL Body of A. Steffin(sic) Found in River Near Dry Dock Yards LOST BALANCE; FELL INTO WATER Manitowoc River has claimed its first victim of the year, August Steffin, a Seventh Ward man having lost his life while fishing up river Sunday night. Steffin's dead body was taken from the river near State Street where the body had been carried by the current after Steffin had probably fallen from the C & NW bridge where his net was found later. Steffen was 34, unmarried and a mason and had been employed by William Bartels, a West side contractor. Steffin was last seen alive Sunday night at 8 when he left the home of his mother on Twenty-First Street to go fishing, carrying a net with him. Ira Smith, F. Egan and other employes of the Goodrich and Dry Docks companies, enroute to work this morning, discovered the dead body floating in the river off State Street, near the Goodrich Steamer, Columbus and immediately gave the alarm notifying the police. The body was recovered and was later identified by a brother of Steffin. The finding of the net owned by Steffin on the C & NW bridge is taken as evidence that the man had been fishing from the bridge and probably in attempting to launch his net lost his balance and fell into the river. Though Steffin could swim the weight of his clothing and the darkness of the night probably cost his life. There is a strong back current up river and the body was carried up river to the point where it was found. There were no marks on the body to indicate that Steffin had been injured or attacked and the death is believed to have been accidental. Steffen was well known on the West side where he made his home with his mother and brother on Twenty-First Street between Washington and Marshall Streets. He was about with his friends Sunday and early in the evening returned home and announced his intention to go sucker fishing and left home about 8 o'clock which was the last seen of him until the body was found in the river. The body was taken in charge by Vogelsang and Murphy and later removed to the home on Twenty-First St. where the funeral will be held Thursday. Steffin is survived by his mother and three sisters, Mrs. F. Dueno, Mrs. August Berber and Mrs. Ernst Dueno and one brother, William. No inquest will be held, the authorities being satisfied that the death was accidental and that an inquest is unnecessary. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Apr. 8, 1912 ************ August Steffen, a brick-layer residing in the 7th ward was drowned in the river last Monday morning. Steven was 34 years of age, unmarried and resided with his mother on 21st street. He left home Sunday evening, taking a net for sucker fishing. The net was found Monday morning at the north western bridge and the body was found at the same time floating at the foot of State street. Mr. Steffen had evidently fallen off the bridge accidentally. The heavy clothing, darkness and cold water would then make saving himself difficult. He is survived by his mother, three sisters, Mrs. F. Dueno, Mrs. August Bellber, and Mrs. Ernest Dueno and a brother William. The funeral was held today. FRED H. STEFFEN (d. 1930) DROPS DEAD AS HE GETS OUT OF AUTOMOBILE Fred H. Steffen, Well Known Plumbing Contractor, Dies Suddenly This Morning Stricken with a heart attack shortly before seven o'clock this morning, as he took his brother, Reinhardt, back to Manitowoc Rapids, Fred H. Steffen, well known Manitowoc plumbing contractor, dropped dead beside his car. Although he had complained at times of not feeling well his condition was never such that he was compelled to leave his work. His death was a sad shock at the Steffen home, 1018 South Ninteenth street, where he leaves a widow and six small children. Mr. Steffen had just left his brother out of the car at the Rapids and had himself stepped from behind the wheel when he threw up his hands and fell forward on his face. Dr. Kemper was summoned and pronounced his death due to heart failure. Spent Entire Life Here The deceased was 39 years of age, having been born in this city and spent his entire life here. For the past twelve years he has been engaged in the general plumbing business, having his business located at his home on South Ninteenth street. In 1912 Mr. Steffen was married to Miss Della Duveneck who survives him with four daughters, Sylvia, Ethel, Hazel and Mary Jane and two sons, Frederick and Querin. Two brothers, Reinhardt of Rapids, and William of this city, and one sister, Mrs. Emil Dehne of this city also survive. Manitowoc Herald News, May 16, 1930 P.2 ******* STEFFEN DEATH TO BE PROBED ORDER INQUEST IN THE DEATH OF LOCAL PLUMBER State Pathologist is Called into Case as Rumors Circulate Through City An inquest to determine cause of the death of Fred H. Steffen, well known plumbing contractor of the city who dropped dead at Manitowoc Rapids on Friday morning and the events immediately preceding the death was ordered Saturday evening by Coroner W.G. Kemper. Decision to hold an inquest tomorrow afternoon came after rumors had gained circulation through-out the city that Steffen had engaged in an altercation shortly before he toppled over at the farm home of a brother. Another of the trio out together on the night preceding the death came to the office of the coroner on Saturday afternoon and stated that the older Steffen had engaged in an altercation with a younger brother, Reinhart, immediately before the death. While it was believed that no blows had been struck, it was decided that everything connected with the death should come under the closest official scrutiny State pathologist Bunting, frequently called in cases of violent or sudden death, was called into the case yesterday morning and was to be in Manitowoc today to examine the body before the interment. Jurors who viewed the remains and who will hear the testimony tomorrow afternoon are Henry Wilda, Albert Zych, Joe Weber, John Kaufman, Henry Revolinski and Charles Schlei. The death of Steffen created considerable of a shock about this city on Friday as he was one of the well known and popular contractors of this city. He was 39 years of age and had been a life-long resident of the city. Services were held for him this afternoon. Manitowoc Herald News, May 19, 1930 page 1 ********** STEFFEN DEATH WAS CAUSED BY BROKEN NECK Dr. Bunting, State Expert, Says Autopsy Reveals Heart Attack Not Cause The Fred Steffen, plumber, who sudden death at Rapids early Friday morning is the subject of inquiry by a coroner's jury today, died from the effects of a broken neck and a hemorrhage in the cavity of the brain which could not be due to heart trouble, was the testimony of Dr. C.H. Bunting, state pathologist, as a witness at the inquest this afternoon. Dr. Bunting declared that Steffen undoubtedly had some slight organic heart affliction but he was positive in his statement that it was not responsible for his death. Dr. Buntin was called here by Coroner Kemper to conduct an autopsy on the body of Steffen yesterday after a statement had been given the authorities by Elvern Walberg, a companion of Steffen and the latter's brother, Reinhardt, at the time of the death, who said that there had been a fight or scuffle between the brothers just preceding the discovery that Fred Steffen was dead. The autopsy was made last night by Dr. Bunting with Coroner Kemper. Preceding Dr. Bunting on the stand, Reinhardt Steffen, brother of the death man and Walberg, who was with the pair Thursday night and early Friday morning, were called and the statements by the two differed materially. Reinhardt said that he found Fred Steffen in a Washington Street drink parlor late Thursday night while Walberg declared that Reinhardt was in the place at the time of his arrival with Fred Steffen. The two witnesses differed also as to other facts and movements of the trio during the later evening and as to the scuffle at the Rapids, Walberg testified that Reinhardt, who he said had been drinking, became involved in an altercation during the rounds; a statement which the latter said he had no knowledge of. Walberg told of trouble between the brothers at Rapids when Fred insisted upon Reinhardt leaving the car and going to his cottage; of a scuffle in which Reinhardt was pinned to the ground by Fred and freed only when he said he "had enough"; of a second scuffle in which he saw Reinhardt on top of Fred, pulled him away and then discovered that Fred did not move and that when he sought to carry him to the car, found he was dead. Reinhardt, who was the first witness called, testified as to the meeting with his brother and Walberg, a visit to several road houses and of going to sleep in his brother's car and of having no knowledge of time of happenings until Fred roused him and told him to get out at Rapids. He said there had been no trouble and no fight, saying that he had held onto Fred when he left the car to steady himself. He noticed, he said, that Fred was pale and evidently ill. Wallberg, who followed Steffen on the stand said that after having been ejected from the car by Fred, the brother had attempted to re-enter the machine and had tried to reach the starter. The dead man had prevented this and had left the car and there was a scuffle between the brothers. Walberg said he separated the two brothers to return to the car. He turned on hearing a noise and discovered the brothers again in a mix-up with Reinhardt on top of Fred. When he pulled Reinhardt away, Fred did not get up and when he started to carry the prostrate man to the car, Mr. Wicke, who had arrived, said there was something wrong and urged that a physician be called. The doctor said Fred was dead. Dr. Bunting was the third witness and gave testimony as above. He said that death could not have been due to heart trouble because there would have been no blood in the cavity of the brain in that case. Dr. Bunting said that the fracture of the vertebra, commonly known as a broken neck, was due to the head striking the ground or being struck by some heavy body. A large crowd is present at the inquest which was still in progress at time of going to press. Manitowoc Herald News, May 20, 1930 page 1 ********** STEFFEN DEATH NATURAL IS JURY VERDICT Inquest Jury Deliberates Only About 20 Minutes Before Reaching Verdict Fred Steffen, well known Manitowoc plumbing contractor who died on May 16, came to his death from natural causes, an inquest of six men decided after twenty minutes of deliberation at the court house last yesterday afternoon following their hearing contradictory testimony from several witnesses. The verdict proved a decided surprise and Coroner Kemper and District Attorney Fischer were at loss to issue statements in view of the fact that Dr. C.H. Bunting, state pathologist attached to the medical staff of the University of Wisconsin, declared that death was due to a dislocated vertebra commonly known as broken neck and from hemorrhage of the brain cavity. - omitted recap of testimony - Jury Verdict Ends Matter, says Fischer "I am going to abide by the decision of the jury in the Steffen case," District Attorney L.F. Fischer said this morning. "While I believe the jury intended to state that the death was accidental and without fault of anyone, the fact that they said the death was 'natural' does not indicate anything to me but that they held no one to blame for it."
