Mr. Taugher was born in County Mayo, Ireland in 1934. The resourses of his parents were impoverished by the famine which devastated the country in 1848 and they decided to make their home in America. Together with their family of five sons and three daughters, they set sail, but before they reached New York, both parents died and were buried at sea. The young family left to themselves shifted about for means of a livelihood and spent the subsequent five years in Canada and New York. They then decided to move to the West and landed in Wisconsin, Manitowoc County in 1853. They carved homes for themselves in common with many others, from the timber lands they settled on this county and in spite of hardships and obstacles managed to provide for themselves and their children. It is needless to recall their history further for it is an open book for the residents of this county. Anthony Taugher was married to Bridget Howley of Manitowoc at St. Nazianz, July 18, 1860 and spent the main portion of his life as a farmer in the Town of Newton. Nine years ago himself and wife moved to Milwaukee and took up their abode there, whither their children had already preceded them. Mr. Taugher might be described as a man simple and just, fearing God and loving his fellow man. Anthony Taugher was an old resident of Newton and a highly respected man. He was a man whom all held in very high regard for his sterling worth and kind disposition. His acquaintance was large, his friends were many and his noble traits of character will not soon be forgotten. And he too, has gone now - gone down the long road into which all roads lead. Peace to his soul. He was stricken with a mild form of apoplexy July 19th and despite all medical aid and attendance he gradually sank until September 26 when he passed away fortified by the last sacraments of his church surrounded by his family, relatives and Rev. Fr. Milet, S. J. of Milwaukee. His end was peaceful as his life had been. The funeral was held on Tuesday September 28th, from the Gesu Church in Milwaukee with interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. He is survived by his widow, two brothers, Michael and Thomas of Manitowoc County; five children, Rev. Thomas Taugher, Drs. J.P. And A.J. Taugher, Mrs. Catherine Koge of Milwaukee and Mrs. John Earles of Seattle, Wash. Relatives and friends of the family from outside who attended the funeral were Dr. P.J. Taugher, Wausau; Mr. and Mrs. John Taugher, Kaukauna; Mrs. Michael and Patrick Hayes, Green Bay; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Morris, Mrs. Ed Gallagher and Wm Morris, Newton; Thos. Taugher and Jas Taugher and Mrs. B. Murphy, Manitowoc, Mrs. Josephine O'Loughlin, Fond du Lac. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., Sept. 30, 1915 ******* Mrs. Anthony Taugher of Milwaukee a former resident of this county, passed away in that city at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Katherine Koge, early Friday morning, January 21st. She survived her husband by only four months, he having died Sept. 26, 1915. She was broken-hearted over his death and pined away, using up in a short time the forces of a sturdy institution. Mrs. Taugher whose maiden name was Bridget Howley, came to this country from Ireland in the year 1853 at a tender age. She had one sister and four brothers, who have all gone before her. At first she settled in New York and later came to Manitowoc where she met Anthony Taugher, to whom she was married in the Village of St. Nazianz, July 18, 1860. Her nature was most amiable. To meet her meant to admire her kindly disposition, which on further acquaintance ripened into a feeling which is called love. Her domestic life was marked by a devotion and self-sacrificed to her husband which was remarkable while her unselfishness in the care and love of her children was constant and cheerful. Her life was gentle but like the still waters it was deep. In her heart of hearts she carried those she loved and her hand was never weary, her step never failed in ministering unto, caring for, waiting upon those, who were in any way dependent upon her. The end was peaceful as the close of a beautiful summer day, when daylight fades into night with increasing loveliness. May her soul rest in peace. She is survived by three sons and two daughters, Rev. Thos. E. Taugher, Drs. J.P. And A.J. Taugher, Mrs. Catherine Koge of Milwaukee and Mrs. John Earles of Seattle, Wash. Her funeral was held on Monday from the Gesu Church, with interment in Holy Cross Cemetery. The funeral was attended by Rev. J.B. Smith, Geneva Lake, Rev. J.P. O'Reilly, Mineral Point, Rev. Jos. J. Ryan, Holy Cross, Rev. Fr. McCann, Granville and the Rev. Fathers Reidl and Schmitz, St. Francis, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Hayes and Mrs. P.E. Hayes of Green Bay, Mr. and Mrs. John Taugher of Kaukauna, John McCully, James Taugher, Mrs. B. Murphy, Stephen Morris and Wm Morris of Manitowoc, Thomas Howley of Waterslirt, Mich., David H. and Grace Carden, Mrs. Lillian Davies, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mulverhill of Chicago, Mrs. Michel Hussey of Waukegan, Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Galligan and Mrs. John Cleary of Kenosha. Taylor of Two Creeks was married to Miss Esther Bushannan of the same town on Tuesday evening last. A number of relatives from abroad were present, among them Capt. D. Buchanan (sic) of Sheboygan. Manitowoc Lake Shore Times, Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1884 P.4 ****** (NOTE: "Tuesday evening last" was Dec. 2, 1884/I think the writer got the surname of a guest mixed up with the bride's surname..) ****** The following obituary which is taken from the Wittenberg Enterprise is re-published by request: A heartbroken husband and two little motherless boys are all that is left of the Taylor family, than which, prior to December, no happier, more contented or pleasanter could have been found. At eleven o'clock Saturday night the poor mother, heartbroken by the loss of her two little girls gladly yielded up her life and passed to that bourne whence no traveler ever returns. Though she had been ill with diphtheria for some time her condition was not considered critical until the death last week of little Esther which completely broke her spirit and in spite of all that medical skill and careful nursing could do she sank rapidly to the end. Esther McNeil was borne in the little hamlet of Two Creeks in Manitowoc County this state, Jan. 1, 1867. There she continued to reside with her parents until Dec. 2, 1884 when she was united in marriage to William Taylor. Shortly after they came to this place where they have since resided. Four children were born to them and home and the world looked exceedingly bright until diphtheria, one of the very worst diseases with which medical skill has to contend, made its appearance and in but little more than a month, took away first Kittie, then Esther and finally the mother. The deepest sorrow pervades every heart, sadness depicted on every face and to the stricken husband, the warmest sympathy of the whole community goes out. His cross is indeed a heavy one to bear. May his grief be tempered by the knowledge that he is not alone in his sorrow. Mrs. Taylor was a model wife and mother, a kind neighbor and friend and the whole community deeply mourns her untimely demise. The interment was made Tuesday, services being held only at the grave. Information regarding early life of Mrs. Frank X. Sandt, 2414 Sixty-third street, Kenosha, is being sought and she today directed a communication to Register of Deeds Gust. Eggert asking his cooperation in furnishing any available data from his records. Mrs. Sandt wrote that she and a sister had been taken from Manitowoc and were admitted to the St. Rose's Orphan Asylum at Milwaukee on December 20, 1890. Records at the institution show that Mrs. Sandt, nee Alice Tiecher, was born on March 25, 1882 and her sister Maude was born on June 2, 1885 but information regarding the names and occupations of her parents are not available. Mrs. Sandt left the orphanage on August 16, 1895 while her sister died there on February 15, 1899. The files at the register of deeds office do not record any Maude Tiecher but a birth registration certificate was issued for an Allicia Teiger who was born on March 26, 1882 and who is believed to be Mrs. Sandt. Her parents would be Mr. and Mrs. Wenzel Teiger. Manitowoc Herald News, Manitowoc, Wis March 4, 1932 P. 2.
