BERTH: Carl Herman August m: 21 Oct. 1874 (co. mar. index v.4 p.86) to: Wilhelmine Wegner Marriage of C.H. Berth to W. Wegner, Schleswig Taken from official sources, of those who have become entangled in the matrimonial noose. The time runs from the first of November till date. By statue the official performing the ceremony, is enjoined to file a certificate in the Register's office. We find they are somewhat remiss. Another requirement of law is, that the married couple should file in the Register's office a record of the result, generally within one year from date of marriage. This law is seldom complied with. BEST: Charles m: 22 Apr. 1876 (co. mar. index v.4 p.103) to: Louise Meyer AGREE MARRIAGE IS FAILURE AFTER 44 YEARS' TRIAL After forty-four years of companionship as man and wife, Charles Best and Louisa Best, aged Kiel residents have decided that marriage is a failure and have elected to go their seperate ways. Judge Kirwan, in circuit court yesterday, approved the decision and granted a divorce. Mr. Best, who is 76, filed the complaint but it was his wife, who is 68, who was granted the decree. Cruel treatment is alleged in the complaint and counter complaint. The court awarded Mrs. Best a division of property in amount of $8,000. The property issue was the real contest and Judge Kirwan, when the parties appeared in court with a large number of witnesses, suggested that attorneys take up the matter to negotiate an agreement and this was done. The bride-to-be is a daughter of our well known townsman Mr. Joseph Staehle, and the happy man of her choice is an employee of the C.M. & St. P. railway, in the construction department. The wedding will take place next Tuesday. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Manitowoc, Wis. Wednesday, October 19, 1898 ******* THEIR SOLEMN VOWS Caroline Staehle and Joseph Betz Married at St. Boniface Church Today BEAUTIFUL FLORAL EFFECTS The Ceremony Is Performed in the Presence of Numerous Relatives and Friends Will Reside in Milwaukee St. Boniface Church was the scene of a pretty wedding ceremony this morning when Miss Caroline Staehle, was united in marriage to Mr. Joseph Betz, of Milwaukee. The church was beautifully decorated for the occasion, the altars and railings being covered with a profusion of palms, evergreens, flowers and potted plants. Promptly at 9 o'clock the bridal party entered the church to the joyous strains of the wedding march from Mendelssohn. Nuptial high mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Peil and at the prescribed time the young couple took their places at the foot of the altar where the solemn and impressive marriage ceremony of the Catholic ritual was read and the vows taken that bound together the destinies of two young lives, "for weal or for woe, for better or worse." The bride was attired in white cashmere, made en traine and trimmed with chiffon. In her hand she carried a bouquet of bride roses and as she stood beside the man of her choice and took the vow to love, honor and obey she was the admiration of all eyes. She was attended by Miss Gesine Schuette as bridesmaid, who was charmingly attired in white mull. The groom wore the conventional black and was attended by Mr. Paul Schuette as best man. During the ceremony of the mass the choir sang an "Ave Maria" and another devotional hymn. At the conclusion of the service the newly married couple received the warm congratulations of those present, after which the wedding party proceeded to the home of the bride's parents where a sumptuous wedding breakfast was served and preparations made for their departure at 1 o'clock to-day for Milwaukee, where they will make their future home. To the young couple the best wishes of a host of friends will be extended. The bride is one of Manitowoc's most popular young ladies. Of an amiable, sunshiny disposition, she will take to her new home that atmosphere of inspiring influence, which comes of true nobility of character. The groom is well and favorably known here as a young man of sterling integrity, and manly character. He is an electrician in the employ of the C.M. & St. Railway. The Herald joins in wishing for Mr. and Mrs. Betz a happy and prosperous voyage on the matrimonial sea, with favoring winds and smiling skies and just enough of fleecy clouds to make life's sunset beautiful.
