Colby-Brauniger.- At the residence of the bride, in this city, by W.H. Glover, Justice of the Peace, Mr. G.W. Colby and Miss Friedericke Brauniger. Manitowoc Pilot, Thursday, June 13, 1878 P. 3 ********* GOLDEN WEDDING OBSERVED VERY QUIETLY BY COLBYS Friends who visited the home or sent messages and tokens of esteem made the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Colby, 308 North Ninth street, a memorable occasion to the pioneer couple today and brought to them the knowledge of the regard in which they are held. Owing to ill health of Mrs. Colby, who for years has been afflicted by blindness and the fact that Mr. Colby is also in poor health, no celebration was planned but the couple received many friends. Mr. and Mrs. Colby have both been residents of Manitowoc for sixty years and for fifty years have been companions and reviewing the half century of life together, found golden memories that made the day a happy one. Mrs. Colby is 73 and Mr. Colby 79 years of age. Their marriage took place in this city, Mrs. Colby having come here with her parents from Germany while Mr. Colby, a native of Vermont, came here the same year, 60 years ago. One daughter blessed their union, Mrs. Charles Steffens, now a resident at Milwaukee and who is here today for the observance of the anniversary. COLBY: J.H.W. m: Oct. 29, 1850 to: Emily Jones Marriages At Chicago, October 29, by the Rev. W.S. Keys, J.H.W. Colby, Esq. of Manitouwoc, and Miss Emily Jones, of Chicago. Manitouwoc County Herald, Saturday, November 30, 1850 ******* FORMER PIONEER IS DEAD Widow of County's First Probate Judge Dead at Chicago MRS. COLBY, NIECE OF LATE P.P. SMITH Dispatches from Chicago today brought the announcement of the death in that city of Mrs. Colby, a former well known pioneer resident of this city, widow of the late Judge Jermiah Colby and daughter of Benjamin Jones, founder of the city. Mrs. Colby's death resulted from her advanced age. The funeral will probably be held at Chicago. Mrs. Colby was the widow of Judge Jermiah Colby, who was the first probate judge of Manitowoc County and was one of the first three attorneys to be admitted to practice in the county. Her father, Benjamin Jones was the founder of the city and its most prominent resident in early days, his name having been identified with the early development of this section. Mrs. Colby was a niece of the late P.P. Smith and had visited the city and was well known. Though Mrs. Colby will be buried at Chicago, the body may later be brought to this city. Judge Colby's body was the first to be interred at Evergreen Cemetery here. Mrs. Colby of late years had made her home with her sister at Chicago and friends here had been advised some time ago that she was in failing health and the news of her death was not unexpected. Mrs. P. P. Smith received a letter this morning saying that the end was near and a short time later, the message announcing death was received. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Thurs., June 2, 1910 page 2

The home of Fred Mahnke on South Main street was the scene of gayety and revelry last evening. A lively crowd of about fifteen couples, the friends of Miss Augusta Mahnke and Mr. William Croll, had assembled to congratulate that happy pair on the announcement of their engagement and to celebrate the occasion in cine (sic) form. All present felt the pervading influence of the spirit of gladness, and joy and levity ran to a high pitch. The festal board, which fairly groaned under its load of palatable pastries, contributed largely to promote the sociability and to dispell formalities among both the entertainers and the entertained. The merry making continued to a late hour, and when the visitors began to take their departure, their hearts were full of good wishes for the couple that have announced their determination to become man and wife. Manitowoc Pilot, Wis., Thursday, June 7, 1900 pg. 8 ***** One of the pleasant social functions of this year was the marriage last evening of Dr. Carey Culbertson of Piper City, Ill., and Miss Katherine Graham of Manitowoc, which took place at the home of the bride's parents, Gen. and Mrs. Harvey Graham, Tenth and Huron streets. The ceremony was performed at 7 o'clock by the Rev. Walter Johnston of the First Presbyterian church, the couple standing in front of a large bank of palms, ferns and pink and white flowers. It was a "pink and white" wedding, these colors in floral effect being carried out in each room. This combination in color was especially noticeable in the dining room, a large bow of pink satin ribbon being attached to the chandelier, from which radiated streamers, to the corners of the table, of the same ribbon. A bunch of La France roses in a setting of asparagus vines, was placed in the center of the table and the mellow light which came from bunches of pink candles, set in silver candelabra, with pink shades, gave a unique coloring to the scene. The marriage was performed in the presence of relatives and a few intimate friends, the bride coming from an upper room on the arm of her father, preceded by the bridesmaid, Helen Culbertson, the maid of honor, Clara Belle Roe of Kansas City, and the ribbon bearers, Marie Rummele and Master Graeme O'Geran. At the place where the vows were pledged the bride was met by the bridegroom and by his best man, Charles Henry Bartlett of Evanston, Ill. Mendelssohn's wedding march was played and at the conclusion of the ceremony Miss Waldo of Pittsburg sand "Dear Heart." The bride wore an Empire gown of white ivory satin with garnitures of point lace, and a tulle veil caught in the coiffure with gold and pearl pins. She carried bride's roses and valley lilies. The bridesmaid's gown was white muslin over pink silk and that of the maid of honor pink silk muslin. Each carried bridesmaid's roses. Marie Rummele wore pink dotted Swiss muslin and Master O'Geran a continental costume of ivory satin. When the service was finished the home was opened for the general reception that followed, Mr. and Mrs. Culbertson receiving the guests. Those assisting them were Gen. and Mrs. Graham, Mrs. Clara Freeman, Mrs. O'Geran, Mrs. Edward James Roe, Kansas City, Mrs. George Bass, Chicago; Mrs. Robert Walker, Menominee, Mich. Those serving in the dining room were Mrs. Gus. Torrison, the Misses Alice Nash and Rose Schuette and Nellie Booth of Milwaukee. Among the out of town guests were: William Wescott, Roy Jones, Mrs. George Jones, Miss E. Eddy, Harry Hurd, Beatrice Casson, Appleton; Fannie Mitchell, Marinette; Dr. and Mrs. Alexander Walker, Menominee, Mich., Miss Waldo, Pittsburg; Nellie Conway, Chicago. The bride, who is the youngest daughter of Gen. Graham, is greatly respected by a large circle of friends in Manitowoc.
