Ferris and Grace Hafner both of Manitowoc ********* IN THE SHADOW OF A PRISON CELL Reached the Love Of Miss Grace Huffner, Who Was Wedded Sunday Night. With the shadow of a prison cell, with love undaunted and true to a promise made before adverse circumstances had worked their spell to make George Ferris an outcast. Miss Grace Huffner, a pretty Manitowoc girl Sunday night braved the criticism of the world and swore lifelong fidelity to the man of her choice. The marriage was performed in the corridor of the jail and was witnessed by only a few of the immediate relative of the bride. After the ceremony Ferris was taken back to his cell to await the action of the court in sentence upon conviction of robbery while the bride returned home with her parents to remain until such time as freedom shall restore her to the arms of her husband. Ferris, who originally came from Ohio, won the promise of his bride months ago and the wedding day was set for an early date. His arrest, upon a charge of hold-up, interfered with the plans, but the love of the girl remained true, and even after his conviction, she expressed a wish to keep her promise and the marriage took place. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, June 17, 1901, p. 1 ********* Two years at the Green Bay reformatory is the sentence which Judge Kirwan this afternoon imposed upon George Ferris, convicted of robbery from the person of Henry Cordes, a Cooperstown man. The case was tried in Circuit Court last week and the jury returned a verdict of guilty. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, June 17, 1901, p. 1
