GROSSHUESCH: Otto (Gasshuesch on mar. index) m: 26 Dec 1899 (co. mar. index v.7 p.86) to: Anna Grosshuesch NIPPED IN THE BUD. Romantic Lovers Plan an Elopement But Papa Appears On the Scene A PRETTY MISS OF SIXTEEN And Nervy Young Man of 21, Would Leave the Old Folks- Plans Well Laid and Nearly Executed. The little town of Newton, this county, is stirred from center to circumference over a sensational affair that promises to develop trouble for some one. Otto Grosshuesch is the cause of it all and he has set the gossip agog and furnished a nine days sensation for the people of that vicinity. Grosshuesch is a nervy young man, until recently employed at the Manitowoc Boiler Works, who had dared to drive to Newton and carry away a sixteen year old girl. It was not against her will, the plans were well laid, an elopement was on, and that it failed in execution is due to the fact that an enraged father appeared on the scene, just in the nick of time, nipping the affair in the bud and separating the two fond hearts. The young man is a son of William Grosshuesch, of Newton, and until a few weeks ago resided with his parents. The girl is Anna Grosshuesch, and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Grosshuesch, also of Newton, and cousin of Otto. For some time a warm attachment has existed between the two young people and they desired to marry. There was parental objection, owing to the extreme youth of the girl. But there is an old saying that love will find a way, and the youthful hearts were not bowed down. The young man left home, came to this city and secured work at the boiler shop. He saved his money, was in communication with the girl of his choice, and the elopement was planned. Saturday evening the young fellow jumped his job, presumably to complete arrangements for the execution of his plans. Wednesday he drove to Newton met the girl and returned to town. They proceeded to a boarding house where Grosshuesch secured rooms for himself and sister. Thus far the plan had worked beautifully. A few hours more and he could defy the old folks. It looked as if the lover of this romance in real life would be a winner. A little more time and the chances are that the fleeting lover and the darling of his heart, if overtaken, would meet the protests of the angry parent with a marriage certificate as a receipt for fees that jingled in the pocket of some Illinois justice. It was the intention to drive to some neighboring town, board a train and land in Chicago, where the knot would be tied. But "Papa" Grosshuesch was on the alert. The disappearance of his daughter had aroused him to action and Thursday morning, just as the lovers were about to leave the hotel, the storm broke. The young man yielded to the inevitable, in the form of papa, with as much grace as could be expected under the circumstances, the girl accompanying her parent, while her would-be life partner remained here, perhaps to arrange new plans. The Romeo is 21 years of age and not bad looking, while the Juliet of the romance is sixteen, pretty of face and graceful of figure. The plans were well laid and but for Papa's timely appearance the two hearts would have been united 'ere this. As it is, the daughter who has caused the parents so much anxiety, has been returned to the home she left and is now under close surveillance, the young man has had time to reflect and is able to see the folly of his course. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Friday, December 8, 1899 P. 1 ***** Otto Grosshusch and his cousin Anna Grosshusch, both from Newton, were in love and decided to get married. Anna's father took the position that she was too young, barely 16, so the young pair ran away. Anna came to Manitowoc where her lover works at the box factory and the two intended to head for Chicago. However, Anna's father got wind of it and stopped them. A large number of relatives and friends gathered to express congratulations and best wishes for long continued marital happiness and life. The guests were well entertained by amusements and were hospitably dealt with in the way of refreshments and a most enjoyable evening was spent by those present and no doubt the gathering succeeded in convincing the bride and groom of the esteem is which they are held by their neighbors. August Gulickson and his wife, whose name was Berit Berge, have resided in the town of Liberty for more than fifty years and are of the pioneer settlers. They have a family of five children, all of who were at home to celebrate the golden wedding anniversary. The names of the children are Mrs. Annie Troek and Iver Gulickson of Iowa, Miss Gusta Gulickson, who is teaching school in North Dakota, and Gilbert Gulickson and Ole Gulickson, who are both of this county. GUNDERSON: George T. m: Feb. 12, 1900 (co. mar. index v.7 p.89) to: Alma J. George A license for the marriage of Geo. Gunderson, of Sheboygan, and Miss Alma George, of this city, has been issued. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Friday, January 26, 1900 P. 3 ******** CAME HERE FOR BRIDE. George Gunderson, of Sheboygan, Weds Miss Alma George Of This City. A PRETTY HOME WEDDING. Solemnized at the Home of the Bride's Parents Last Evening-Many Out of Town Guests Present-The Principals. The home of Mr. and Mrs. John George, Sr., on Main street, was Monday evening the scene of a pretty wedding, when their daughter Miss Alma, was given in marriage to Mr. George Gunderson, of Sheboygan. Sixty invitations had been issued and guests to that number were in attendance. It was exactly 8 o'clock when the bridal couple entered the front parlors and took their place and as Rev. Father Gray, of St. James Parish, read the hymeneal service, the soft strains of exquisite music added to the impressiveness of the scene. The bride was becomingly attired in muslin desole while the groom wore the customary black. Miss Leona Weseman, as bridesmaid, was dressed in a gown of blue organdie. Mark Gunderson, brother of the groom, was best man. The parlors were effectively decorated in palms and cut flowers and the scene was very pleasing. Immediately after the ceremony the newly wedded couple were made the recipients of the hearty congratulations of the guests and if but a share of the happiness wished be theirs, the future indeed is bright. A delectable luncheon was served later in the evening and the guests remained to make merry. Although a resident of Sheboygan, the groom has made frequent visits to the city and is well known as a young man of industry and sterling qualities. He is in the employ of the city and holds a position as patrolman. The bride is held in high esteem by a large circle of friends and is the possessor of a charming personality and gracious manner which has made her a general favorite with her acquaintances. The HERALD unites with many friends in the wish that the bark upon which Mr. and Mrs. Gunderson have set sail may glide along smoothly carrying them to the end of their journey in safety and that the voyage may be on a calm sea. Out of town guests present were: Capt. and Mrs. F. Gunderson and son, Capt. and Mrs. A. Gunderson, Capt. E. Ingbretson and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. E. Sonnemann and the Messrs. J. Gunderson, Mark Gunderson and Andrew Gunderson, Sheboygan. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Tuesday, February 13, 1900 P.1
