Have war time picture of GIBSON in uniform. ********* CIVIL WAR VET, FORMER RESIDENT, DIES IN THE WEST Lieut. Aaron Gibson Was Member of Co. A 5th Wisconsin, First Local Company to Leave in 60’s Letters to relatives in the city brought news today of the death of Lieut. Aaron B. Gibson at Long Branch, Cal., on March 4 at the age of 82. Lieut. Gibson was a pioneer settler. He came here with his brother, the late George Gibson of this city about 1857. From that time up to 1861 he was engaged in the lumber business. When the Civil war began he enlisted in the first company raised here which became Company A. Fifth Wisconsin infantry. Starting as a corporal he passed through all the intermediate grades to a captaincy. He was not commissioned as such because by that time the company had become to reduced by battle casualties as to be no longer a captain’s command. As first lieutenant he commanded the company through the Wilderness campaign until disabled by wounds at Spotsilvania, Va. He had also been previously wounded in the Chancellorsville campaign. After his wounds, he joined the company in its last fight at Fort Stevens, Washington, walking to the company when he heard it was there with the formality of a discharge from the hospital. Lieut. Gibson was the last surviving commissioned officer of those who were mustered out with the old regiment. Two others, Capt. Joseph B. Oliver of Milwaukee and Capt. Richard Carter of Dodgeville, Wis., still survive, but they served only a part of the time and were not mustered out when the old regiment returned from the war. Of the original company commanded by Lieut. Gibson, only nine now survive, four of whom reside in the county. Lieut. Gibson was a splendid officer; one who had the confidence of his superiors and equally the respect and affection of his men. On his return from the army he married Miss Carrie McAllister, daughter of Charles McAllister, pioneer resident of this city. For a time he engaged in farming in the town of Rapids. Later he removed to Kansas where he again engaged in farming and prospered. Several years ago he disposed of his property there and established a home at Long Beach, near Los Angeles, Cal., where his last years were spent. His widow and two daughters survive him. HEMSCHEMEYER, a resident at Manitowoc, Wis., and a member of G.A.R. Post No. 18, was born May 19, 1833, in Hanover, Germany. When he was 14 years old he came to America with his parents, C. H. and Sophia (Rickmann) Hemschemeyer, and they located on a farm in Manitowoc county, Wis., where he assisted his father until he was 19 years old, with the exception of winter seasons, when he attended school. In 1852 he engaged in business, in which he operated until the second call of the President for troops in the first year of the civil war. August 21, 1862, he enlisted in Company F, 26th Wisconsin Infantry, at Manitowoc for three years. He passed through the several non-commissioned grades and was commissioned 1st Lieutenant of Company I of the same command, April 13, 1864. Oct. 19th of the same year he was promoted to the Captaincy of Company I and was mustered out as such. He was in the first regiment raised for Sigel’s command in Wisconsin and left the State for Washington, October 6th. He was in the movements to Gainesville, and afterwards to Falmouth, and did not miss the “Mud Campaign” at a later date. He was in the disastrous battle of Chancellorsville, fought afterwards at Gettysburg, and went with the command to join the troops in the West and was in the action at Wauhatchie on the Tennessee. He fought at Mission Ridge and went thence to Knoxville and back to Lookout, and in May was in the reconnoissance and skirmishing at Buzzard Roost. He was in the fight at Resaca, Pumpkin Vine Creek, in the movements at Kenesaw Mountain and in the fight at Peach Tree Creek, in the siege of Atlanta and started with Sherman in November for the march to the sea and traveled through Georgia 34 days, engaged in the varied operation which marked the progress of the triumphal march. He was in the fight at Averysboro in March and was under fire at Bentonville, three days later, going thence to Goldsboro and Raleigh, where the command delayed until the surrender of General Johnston, when he again took up the line of march and journeyed for weary days through heat and dust to Washington, where he was a participant in the Grand Review. The regiment left Washington June 13th and reached Milwaukee on the 17th, where it was welcomed by the German citizens, and was soon after paid off and discharged. After his return home Mr. Hemschemeyer was engaged in the sale of groceries and afterward in the management of a hotel in which he was occupied 10 years. In 1886 he opened a hotel at Silver Lake, four miles from Manitowoc, at a point which is rapidly becoming noted and popular as a summer resort. He was married August 20, 1856, to Wilhelmina Storch at New Bremen, Ohio. They have three children, a son and two daughters, all of whom are deceased. Mr. Hemschemeyr has officiated as City Clerk of Manitowoc and as Register of Deeds of the county. Thirty-One Persons Lost. In fulfilling the painful duty which devolves upon us at this time we have endeavored to present to our readers a correct report containing all the information in regard to the lost which we could obtain. We fear there will be some errors, but we have as far as possible obtained the statements of relatives or immediate friends of the deceased. We would that some other hand than ours--one better skilled in soothing afflicted hearts--might perform the sad office of saying comforting words to the distressed of our Village, but it may not be and we can only say to those who suffer, you have our heartfelt sympathy--and the sympathy of every person in Manitowoc. We have known your friends, respected them, loved them; and your loss is our loss. Let us hope that He who doeth all things well hath not permitted our friends to fall in vain. JAMES A. HODGES, Was born July 4th, 1827 at Taunton, Massachusetts. He was of good family, his father having represented his district in Congress. At an early age James received a good education and then went to New York city to learn the trade of a bookbinder. In 1850 he came to Milwaukee where for several years he was a clerk for Kellogg & Strong. Came to Manitowoc in the Spring of 1857 and for nearly six years was in company with Peter Johnson in the pier business. In the fall of 1862 he went into the army as a member of Co. K. 21st Regiment and was made orderly sergeant. Was in the battle of Perrysville, and shortly after was taken prisoner and sent to Libby Prison. Here he remained some months when he was exchanged and returned to his regiment. On the march to Atlanta he received a severe sun stroke which nearly proved fatal, and as he never possessed a strong physique he was transferred to the invalid corps, where he served out his time as private secretary to Gen. Sweet, stationed at camp Douglas Chicago Ill. In 1866 he was appointed a clerk by Mr. Goodrich and when the Orion came out took his place on her. This spring the Orion went to the other shore but at Mr. H. preferred to change boats rather than routes he was transferred to the Sea Bird. Leaves a wife and four children. The writer of this article was a personal friend of James Hodges. We have spent many, very many happy hours in his society. We mourn for him as a brother, and we are not alone in our sorrow. Of the hundreds who knew him here and elsewhere he had not one enemy that we know of. His fund of good humor was inexhaustible and no company was sad long at a time where he was one of the number. He was generous to a fault; was in fact his own worst enemy. If he had a dollar his friend could share it to the last cent. In this he was defective as a business man, for he cared more for others than himself, which is wrong, but as a clerk, or an accountant, he had no superior. Capt. Kirtland, who till this spring sailed the Orion, says Mr. H. was no ordinary man; he was superior in every way. Strictly honest and reliable his work was as good as his note and had he worked as hard for himself as he did for others he would have been a wealthy man beyond a doubt. It is sad to see a man so wholly unselfish cut down right in his prime--just at time too when he had commence laying up something for his old age--sad because this work is far too selfish for its own good. But we must not murmur at the ways of Providence which are past finding out. Friend James, Good-Bye! Would to God there were more such men as you. Whether thy final resting place be'neath the white crested wave, or under the pine and willow where friends may pour their tears and the breezes sigh their requiem, may angel keep their watch until thy Maker calls. (Article continues in the same manner for each individual lost on the SEA BIRD; Geo. W. Emery, Capt. N.T. Nelson, Capt. John Sorenson, Charles Riechen, Joseph Doucett, Henry Nieman, Henry Pfeffer, James Leykom, August Wilde, Richard Flossbach, Amos Meyer, John Melka, Martin Rozezguiatee, Wm. Barter, Casper Klimer, John Foucks, Herman Jacoby, Wenzel Hawlichek, P.C. Danahy, Raymond H. Hunt, Fred Henning Jr., and Thorine Oleson.) OTHERS. We hear of others who were on the boat beyond a doubt--one a Norwegian who has been chopping wood in this vicinity, could not learn his name; and two girls from the country who took passage from here with the intention of going either to Milwaukee or Chicago have not been heard from since the disaster. So it will be seen there were Thirty-one from here certainly, and two doubtful, lost on the SEA BIRD. The Manitowoc Tribune Thursday, April 16, 1868 pg. 4 ********* (Note: Regina Johnston (listed under Hodges and Johnston in Evergreen) was his wife)
