Tombstone ******** WAR VETERAN HEARS TAPS Frederick Saubert was Pioneer Settler of Two Rivers Two Rivers, Feb’y 7th—Forty-nine years ago, when the bugle sounded, Fredrich Saubert joined the ranks of his neighbors and comrades and marched with the boys of “61.” Today at the age of 89 years, after a life of toil, he joined the army of the unnumbered dead. Mr. Saubert came to this city when a young man and for years worked at diversified industry. However about forty years ago, when the northern portion of Manitowoc county was still an unbroken wilderness, he purchased a small farm about six miles north of this city. Shortly thereafter he established a wayside inn, naming it the Rangline (sic) house. For those traveling forth between this city and the town of the “peninsula” his hostelry became a home like a stopping place. Mr. Saubert was a soldier during the Civil war, enlisting Co. H (or R?) Wisconsin Volunteers and served until the war was over. He is survived by nine children, five daughters and four sons, as well as one brother. The funeral took place this afternoon from the residence of his son, Fred Saubert under the auspices of the Jos. Rankin post G.A.R. with Rev. Ueberle officiating. A, Fifth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry which departed from your city on June 23, 1861. In the passing of John Gilbert, there were still living 3 veterans, John Mills of Hika, Wm Crocker at Milwaukee and Joseph Strouf of Montana. At this writing, I wish to inform you that Jos. Strouf passed away at the home of his daughter at Coffee Creek, Montana on April 29 at the age of 91. He had been in fairly good health with mind quite alert up to the time of his death. He was buried in the family lot at Stanford, Montana on May 1st beside his wife and two sons who preceded him years ago. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Albert Simon and Mrs. Jos. Fogeltanc of Montana and one son, James Strouf of Stratford, Wash., also by 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Mr. Strouf was a staunch American citizen and a great lover of the land he fought for from 1861 to 1864. He had made his home with his two daughters for 16 years, who cared for him tenderly doing everything for his comfort. His grandchildren also loved and respected him highly, granting him everything for his comfort. I have read the Pilot for twenty years and could hardly be without it. K, 21st Regiment, recently died in Tennessee. He was a resident of Kossuth, and a young man of good character. His aged parents feel the loss of a dutiful son. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, February 27, 1863 pg. 2 ******** Death of Timothy Sullivan, Jr. In our last issue we announced the death of Timothy Sullivan, Jr., of Kossuth - a member of Co. K, 21st Regiment. The following letter, addressed to his father, will give the circumstances: Camp Near Murfreesboro, January 30, 1863 Timothy Sullivan, Esq.: Dear Sir: - I have just received the painful intelligence of the death of your son Timothy. He died at the hospital at Nashville, on the 28th of this month, of quick consumption. He was sent to hospital, I think, on Christmas day. We did not suppose at that time that he was dangerously sick, and the news of his death was very unexpected to us. I feel his loss very much. His faithfulness in the performance of duty - his cheerfulness under every deprivation and hardship - and the good example he gave to the men of the company - made him one of my most valuable men. A few days before his sickness I had promoted him as a reward for his uniform good conduct. He was universally respected and his loss will be deeply felt in the Company. I sympathize deeply with yourself and family in this great loss. It will console you to know that he died like a true, brave man, in the faithful discharge of the highest duty of the citizen - in the defense of his country. Very Respectfully, Yours, &o (sic), CHAS. H. WALKER. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, March 6, 1863 pg. 1
