THIEDE HENRY 5th Wis. Inf. Company F Union Army Enlisted as private: June 3, 1861 at Pewaukee, Wis. Mustered out: Sept. 24, 1862 as disabled Born: March 1829 Germany Died: June 4, 1908 Two Rivers, Wis. Cemetery: Pioneers Rest Cemetery, Two Rivers, Wis. Plot No: 3 - 85 Tombstone ***** (From the correspondent in Two Rivers, 08 June):  Heinrich Thiede, a resident of the South Side, died Thursday morning. He was a  veteran of the Civil War, for which service he drew a pension. His well-attended  funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the Evangelical Church. He is survived by  a widow and several grown children in good circumstances. Der Nord Westen, 11 June 1908 ********* OLD TIMERS - Henry Thiede who had served four years in the Civil war then became  married to Mrs. Mandel in 1867. Mrs. Thiede who is in good health at 76 came to  this vicinity in 1856 with the entire Schwantes family consisting of six boys,  four boys, the father and mother. The father bought a farm of eighty acres a few  miles west of here soon after. He was proprietor of a hotel in Pomern, Regen Walde,  Germany where Mrs. Thiede was born. To satisfy his children who did not like the  business he sold out for a good price and they emigrated to America. Left alone  during the war with her two babies Fred and Henry who are now upright citizens of  this vicinity, Fredericka went back to live with her father on his farm. The  Schwantes boys, Carl, August, Fred and William had all gone to the war and she and  her sister helped harvest the crops and did all they could to take their place.  There was much work to do. And besides, they made home spun garments which they gave  in exchange for help in farm work from the neighbors. The Thiedes lived on a farm a  few miles north of this city for eight years and then sold out and took up their  residence in Two Rivers. Here the family has since resided. Since the death of Mr.  Thiede eight years ago Mrs. Thiede has lived with her son Ernst, contractor. Two Rivers Reporter, Saturday, Dec. 13, 1913

TREAT ELLERY B. U.S Navy Born: Aug. 20, 1836 Aurora, Erie County, New York Died: Nov. 18, 1880 Manitowoc, WI Cemetery: Evergreen, Manitowoc WI Tombstone ***** E.B. Treat died on Thursday evening last after a sickness of one week's duration. When first taken sick about one week before his death, no one believed that for him “life's fatal fever” was so near over. The man seemed so strong, so active in the pursuits of his profession, so entertaining a companion in social gathering that it seemed difficult to realize that he should so suddenly be called to pay the great debt of Nature. During he brief illness he suffered indescribable pain but bore it with manly fortitude. He did not share the hope of his friends that his sickness was one of those ills which checker life without terminating it. He believed it to be the final struggle and that Death was to be triumphant. But no repining of his added to the anguish of his sorrowing family. He contemplated death without a murmur as he had suffered pain without complaint. E.B. Treat was born in Erie county, N.Y., August 30, 1838. He attended school at Aurora Academy until he was 16 years or age, when he went to Buffalo and entered the law office of Backus & Lanning as a student. He was admitted to the bar December 1st, 1859. He came to Wisconsin in 1860 and taught school for six months in Sharon, Walworth county, this state. At the opening of the war he returned to Aurora organized a company of volunteers and was commissioned Lieutenant, but was compelled to resign on account of ill health. He was admitted to the bar in Milwaukee, April 16, 1861, and at Chicago, April 19, 1861. From Chicago he came to Sheboygan on law business and was so well pleased with the county that he resolved to settle there, which he did in 1862. In the fall of the same year he was elected district attorney of Sheboygan county. June 29, 1863, he married Charlotte H. Farnsworth, daughter of one of the oldest settlers of Sheboygan county. The following spring he came to Manitowoc and purchased the law business of Wm. F. Nichols, and formed a partnership with Wm. Hamilton. The partnership then formed continued for four or five years. He was elected district attorney of Manitowoc county for a number of terms. After the dissolution of partner- ship with Hamilton, Mr. Treat continued the practice of law by himself, and in 1872 formed a partnership with L.J. Nash. This was dissolved a short while after and Mr. Treat gradually discontinued his law practice and went into other business. But some unfortunate speculations compelled him to resume the practice of his profession. At the time of his death he was in partnership with John Franz and had quite a lucrative practice. In 1870 Mr. Treat became the proprietor of the PILOT and it was edited by him for the period of one year. Although the work was a new experience to him, he gave evidence of a journal- istic ability of high order. He was a pithy nervous and graceful writer and under his management the PILOT wielded quite an influence in the county. As a lawyer Mr. Treat was painstaking, conscientious and honorable. His perceptions were acute and his legal knowledge was always available. He never made his duty as a man subservient to his success as a lawyer. No false hopes were ever held out to a client to encourage fruitless litigation. His success attested his sincerity, his prudence, and the faithfulness with which he discharged trusts confided to him. He was not a showy lawyer but he was diligent, well read and faithful to the interests of his clients. The more intimate the acquaintance with Mr. Treat the higher ones opinion of his ability became. But highly as Mr. Treat was esteemed in a professional sense, much as he was respected as a good citizen, a faithful officer, and an honorable business man, in his private life his good qualities shone forth most conspicuously. In acts of friendship, charit- able deeds and the many offices of a kindly and generous heart, E.B. Treat was the peer of any man living. The writer has known him intimately for the last two years and has witnessed many acts of unostentatious benevolence which produced for the subject of this sketch a respect, now bordering on reverence since the heart that prompted these deeds has ceased to throb and the hand that never refused to give to need lies still and clammy on the breast which held a manly soul.
