Ramsdell was wounded at Vicksburg over five years ago. Manitowoc Pilot, October 16, 1868 P. 1 ****** SKILLFUL SURGICAL OPERATION.We mentioned a few weeks since that Dr. Easton had taken a large piece of bone from the thigh of Lieut. Daniel A. Ramsdell, who was wounded at Vicksburg over five years ago. On Wednesday Dr. Easton performed another operation upon Lieut. Ramsdell, and succeeded in extracting the ball which has been the cause of all his sufferings. It is a large enfield rifle ball, weighing an ounce and a quarter, and is badly battered, having embedded itself in the bone, where it has remained and caused him untold suffering ever since he was first wounded. The many friends of Lieut. Ramsdell will be gratified to know that there is now a prospect of his speedy recovery. Manitowoc Pilot, November 6, 1868 P. 1

At the time of his enlistment, Reed was age 20 and listed his occupation as a printer. He had blue eyes, brown hair and stood 5'8". ***** The announcement of the death of John M. Read(sic) was received by the hosts of friends of the deceased with profound sorrow and regret, for he was a general favorite in the large circle of his acquaintances extending not only throughout Kewuannee (sic) and Manitowoc counties, but throughout a considerable portion of the state. Mr. Read was born at Louisville, Ky., November 3d, 1842. In 1845 he removed with his parents to St. Louis, Mo., and in 1847 to Milwaukee. The following spring his parents located in Manitowoc county. He had the misfortune to lose his father while only eight years of age, and early began the battle of life. He received a common school and printing office education. At the breaking out of the war he enlisted as a private in Company E, 14th Wisconsin, and with that gallant regiment participated in the battles of Shiloh, Corinth, Spanish Fort, Vicksburg, and in Sherman's march to the sea. He was severely wounded at Corinth, and received special notice in the official reports by his commanding officer for bravery on the field of battle. He was discharged with his comrades in 1865, having been promoted from the ranks to the adjutancy of his regiment. His comrades speak of him in the highest and most enthusiastic terms of praise. After the close of the war he engaged in the publication of newspaper at Warsaw, Mo., and in 1868 purchased the Enterprise of Hon. E. Decker, and removed to Kewaunee, where he has since resided. Shortly after coming to Kewaunee he was married to Eliza, daughter of Judge Johannes, but lost his wife by death scarcely a year after their marriage. In 1872 he was married to his present wife. In 1870 he was elected county superintendent, which office held with slight intermissions up to 1880. In 1874-75 he was elected to and served in the state senate. Last fall he was elected member of Assembly, but on account of failing health returned his certificate of election. For four years past his health has been gradually, slowly but surely failing. Consumption had laid its insidious hand upon him. And yet all the while the buoyant, cheerful spirit of the man seemed unruffled and serene. Genial manner, ready wit and skillful repartee accompanied him to the last. But at length the resisting force of nature was exhausted; disease was the conqueror, and death kindly brought an end to his long suffering. Last January he resigned the control of his paper and went south in the hope of prolonging life. Growing worse, his wife was called to him, and when hope failed, he longed for one more glimpse of home and the old familiar scenes. He started for home with his wife. On Wednesday night he died on the cars at Louisville, his native town. And then passed away a man of brilliant parts, a man of warm heart, kindly impulses, and fine social qualities, who seemed peculiarly constituted for the enjoyment of heaven's bounties and life's pleasures. A devoted husband, a tender indulgent father, a dutiful and affectionate son, a genial gentleman who elicited the love of all, a good neighbor, a worthy, patriotic citizen, and a man of much more than average intellectual ability. That his memory will be cherished with unfeigned affection by his fellow citizens was testified by the large concourse of people who attended his burial at Kewaunee last Sunday. The Temple of Honor and Odd Fellows, of which societies he was a member, attended his funeral in regalia. The services were conducted by the Rev. John Churchill, of this city. The Odd Fellows also read their burial service, and the grave closed over all that remained of poor John Read-one of God's noblemen. If the background must show the frailties of his humanity, and some reproach mingle with his otherwise unstained career, it shall be remembered of him "more in sorrow than in anger"- "After life's fitfull fever He sleeps well." The deceased leaves a wife and three children, a mother and two sisters-Mrs. Richard Smith, of Kewaunee, and Mrs. John Maguire, of northern Michigan. Algoma Record Herald, Thursday, March 17, 1881 P.3 ********* In Kewaunee, on Friday, September 1st, Eliza Johannes, daughter of John M. Read, aged 1 month and 29 days. Though a large circle of friends and acquaintances had for some time been prepared for the worst, the sudden call came as a shock for hopes of his recovery were entertained up to Sunday. Mr. Reuther had been ailing for some weeks but had borne up so well that it was generally believed that he would conquer his ailment and secure at least a few more years' lease on life. It was not to be however, and a few minutes after midnight last Sunday evening, the grim Reaper claimed his own. Death came peacefully and the whole family with the exception of O.F. Reuther of Manitowoc were at his bedside at the final leave taking. Peter Reuther was born February 8, 1836 at Baubach, Rhine Province, Prussia and died at the age of sixty-nine years, six months and six days. He came with his parents to America in 1854 landing at New York and going directly to Centerville, Manitowoc County, where he lived until 1873, going thence to Two Rivers, living there until 1877, when he returned to Centerville but two years late removed to Brillion and purchased the Brillion House of which he had charge for three years. In October, 1861, he took to wife Miss Augusta Rossberg of Centerville. Seven surviving children bless the union. They are: Louis, local representative of the Standard Oil Co., George, Register of Deeds of Manitowoc County, Mrs. H.B. Schlichting of Deadwood, S.Dakota; Mrs. Dale Anderews of this city, Otto of Manitowoc, Sarah at home and Emil of Milwaukee. In 1864 decedent enlisted in Co. B, 45th Wisconsin Infantry, rising to the ranks of Orderly-Sergeant and taking part in the campaign around Nashville, Tenn. After disposing of the Brillion House in 1882, he engaged in the lumbering business for a time and later accepted a position as commercial traveler for the Victor Schlitz Co., of Milwaukee in which capacity he served for eight years. For a few years, he owned a saloon on the present site of the First National Bank. Mr. Reuther has been prominent in politics and held many offices of public trust, all of which he filled with honor and ability. He represented Manitowoc County in the legislature of 1872. Among the local offices he has held are village president, supervisor, clerk, trustee and police justice. He was also a member of Hiram Gibbs Post, G.A.R. and of two fraternal orders, the Sons of Herman of this city and of the Odd Fellow lodge of Manitowoc. He served as local postmaster during the Harrison administration. In addition to wife and children, he is survived by one brother, Jacob of Calumet, Mich., and two sisters, Mrs. Catherine Leonhardt of Centerville and Mrs. Valentine Paulus of Harvard, Nebraska. the funeral took place at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon and was one of the largest ever held here, testifying to the high esteem in which decedent was held by his fellow citizens for among those gathered to pay the last respects to the dead were old residents from various portions of Manitowoc and Sheboygan counties. Mr. Hubert Falge of Manitowoc, an old friend of Mr. Reuther delivered a touching funeral oration in the German language and Wm V. McMullen spoke in English. A choir sang also. The burial was in charge of the Sons of Herman. Members of the local lodge of Odd Fellows attended in a body, as well as ?? members -- illegible --- .
