Cemetery Clarks Mills Association Cemetery Cato, Wis. Row #6 Stone #1. Military Headstone. ******** Sudden Death The bridge across the little creek on the Rapids road, running past the farm of Mr. J. Richards, was the scene of a mishap on Thursday last which was the indirect cause of the death of Mr. Andrew Kendall, a well-to-do and highly respected farmer of the town of Cato. At the time mentioned Mr. Kendell, with two ladies, were crossing the bridge seated in a buggy, when they were met by a yoke of oxen, coming in the opposing direction, who became unmanageable and caused the horse to shy off, throwing the buggy and its occupants to the ground. The ladies sustained but slight injuries and turned their immediate attention to Mr. Kendell, who showed signs of having been seriously hurt. The assistance of residents in the immediate vicinity was summoned and the unfortunate man removed to the nearest house; but before it was reached, Mr. Kendell was dead. Physicians were called by whom a critical examination was made, which failed to show any bones broken or other wounds or bruises which would possibly have been fatal, and the opinion was reached that death resulted from heart disease- probably hastened by fright. Manitowoc Tribune - September 13, 1877 - page 3 ******** Kendall - on Thursday, September 6, 1877 of heart disease, Mr. Andrew Kendall, aged 48 years. Deceased was born in Dorchester, Eng., May 31st, 1829 and has resided in this county over 23 years. His funeral which occurred Sunday, September 9th, was attended by a large procession of sorrowing friends to the cemetery at Clarks Mills. He leaves a bereaved wife and two orphans, children to whom he was a father and who mourn his loss. He had no children of his own. Manitowoc Tribune - September 13, 1877

KOHN MARTIN WOUNDED FIVE TIMES, LIVES TO RIPE OLD AGE Martin Kohn, 88, Civil War Veteran Dies At Home of Daughter Here Martin Kohn, 88, veteran of the Civil War and a native of Centerville, being one of the builders of the Centerville pier, died this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Lang, 1911 Western Ave. with whom he has made his home for the past four years. He has been in failing health for the past five weeks. Burial will take place Monday morning at 9 o'clock, from the St. Paul's Catholic church, and interment will be at Sheboygan, where the deceased resided for many years before locating here. The deceased was born in Germany in 1840 and came to the United States at the age of 20, and after short stays in New York, and Detroit came to Sheboygan. He then proceeded to Centerville to work on the pier being built at that time. The Civil War broke out and Mr. Kohn enlisted and joined Company H, 26th Wisconsin infantry, in 1862. Wounded Five Times Mr. Kohn received his baptism of fire at Chancellorsville, Va., May 6, 1863 and participated in the battle of Gettysburg, one of the historical struggles of the war. He toook part also in the battle of Lookout Mountain and was with Sherman in the march to the sea. He was seriously wounded in May, 1864, receiving five bullets at one time. This ended his service in the army and nearly cost him his life. After many months in the hospital he was released and sent home to Centerville. He continued his occupation as a carpenter there until he retired from active work. He was a member of the Walter Post, G.A.R. here and later the Sheboygan post. Four children, Mrs. John Lang of this city, Mrs. Robert Gumz, Milwaukee, Mrs. John Bartzen, Butte, Mont., and Jacob Kohn, Milwaukee, as well as twenty grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren survive. A brother, Edward Kohn, Centerville, also survives. Manitowoc Herald News, Saturday, April 14, 1928 P.2 (Note: He was not in Dennis Moore's list, because he enlisted at Sheboygan.) ********** MARTIN KOHN, VETERAN OF THE CIVIL WAR SURVIVES VOLLEY OF BULLETS DIRECTED AT HIS BODY Martin Kohn, one of the early pioneers of Centerville, Manitowoc County, was born in Teutz, West Prussia on October 22, 1840 and at the age of 20 came to the United States landing at Castle Garden in the year of 1860. After a few months work at Dunkirk, New York, Toledo and Detroit, he gradually worked his way to Sheboygan, landing here with the Goodrich Line, the only means of transportation those days. From Sheboygan he proceeded to Lintz's Pier, just under construction at that time being located a few miles south of Centerville, where he was engaged by Contractor Day as carpenter receiving seventy-five cents a day, payable in store trade. Considerable shipping was done from this pier there being a number of sawmills in the surrounding country and often several vessel loads of wood and lumber were loaded in a single day at that point. About that time, Mr. Kohn's parents and the rest of the family arrived from Germany and immediately set about to clear a tract of land and erect a log cabin to house the family. A year later, the Civil War broke out and on August 20, 1862 he with about sixty others from the Town of Rhine and Mosel and the city of Sheboygan, enlisted and were sent to Camp Siegel, Milwaukee, where the addition of forty others, the men were organized into Company H, 26th Wisconsin Infantry. After a period of six weeks intensive training, the entire regiment embarked for Mason & Dixon's line via Washington on October 8, 1862. There the troops went into winter quarters and training at Brooks Station, Va., about twelve miles out from Washington and it was there the following spring that he saw Abraham Lincoln at a review in which he participated. Rushing the training, the regiment soon was dispatched into the thick of battle. Mr. Kohn received his baptism of fire at Chancellorsville, Va., May 6, 1863. Following much maneuvering with the Confederate Army, the forces met at Gettysburg, Pa., July 1, fighting for three days in one of the most bitterly contested struggles of history. The records of the war department show that his regiment suffered the fifth greatest losses in battle of any regiment in the Union Army, a total of 169 being killed. His own company was one of the hardest hit, nineteen being killed in action, 34 wounded and six dying of disease. From Gettysburg, his organization was transferred to Chattanooga, Tenn., where he participated in the battle of Lookout Mountain in November, Missionary Ridge and many skirmishes. His regiment was sent to Knoxville to take the siege instituted by General Longstreet on General Burnside's command and when this was successfully accomplished, the regiment returned to Chattanooga camping in Lookout Valley where the Battle of Missionary Ridge was started. On January 1, 1864, while in winter quarters, he was promoted to be corporal of his Company. Besides the battles mentioned he also took part in the battles of Chattanooga, Buzzards's Roost, --illgebile-- in the March with General Sherman to the sea. In the latter battle he was seriously wounded on May 15, 1864, receiving five bullets at one and the same time. Just as he was leveling his rifle at a Confederate, a volley of bullets rained upon him, striking each leg, one in each arm and one in the stomach ending his fighting career and almost costing him his life. After three weeks in the field hospital, the army surgeons wanted to amputate his right leg, which as his most serious wound but he refused to permit this preferring to take a chance which decision proved to be a sound one. He was later transferred to the hospitals in Chattanooga, Nashville, Louisville and then to Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, from which place at the end of the hostilities, when all wounded were returned to their respective states, he was transferred to Branch Harvey Hospital, Madison, Wisconsin. It was there that the physicians finally removed the bullet in his right leg which caused him much pain and which he has preserved to this day as a war relic. On May 28, 1865, he received his discharge and returned to the home of his parents although it was over a year before he was able to again resume his usual occupation as carpenter. Mr. Kohn was married twice. In January, 1866 he was married to Miss Margaret Wegner of Centerville after which he pursued farming for many years, following the carpenter and house moving ? as a side line. the union was blessed with nine children, five sons and four daughters, four of whom are still living. Mrs. John Bartzen, Butte, Montana, Jacob Kohn, Milwaukee, Mrs. John Lang, Manitowoc and Mrs. Robt. Gumz, Milwaukee. His first wife died in 1893 and in the year of 1897 he removed to Sheboygan. Here he was married a second time to Mrs. Nick Tholson at 1905 N. Fifteenth Street, where the family still resides, the step children being Jos. M., John and Miss Clara Tholson. In the year 1913, Mr. Kohn, together with Commander Steffen and a few other veterans of Old Company H took advantage of the appropriation made by the State of Wisconsin to permit all participants of the Battle of Gettysburg to attend the fiftieth anniversary of the battle and an entire week was spent there. It was indeed interesting when they stood on the same spot where they fought in the thick of battle a half century before. The grounds had been transformed into a beautiful park and cemetery as a lasting remembrance of the fierce battle, 3575 veterans being buried there. Mr. Kohn will be 81 years of age on his next birthday in October, but in spite of his age he is still able to do all chores and repair work about the premises, even performing carpenter work. Before his removal to Sheboygan, he belonged to the G.A.R. post of Manitowoc and since that time is a member of the local Gustavis Wintermeyer Post serving as junior vice commander several times.
