SIXTA: Emil C. b: 1873 in Manitowoc, WI. p: Frank and Anna (Kolinsky) Sixta m: 15 Aug. 1904 (co. mar. index v.7 p.343) to: Irene W. Bleser, dau. of Dan Bleser children: Frank The announcement is made of the engagement of Emil Sixta and Miss Irene Bleser. Manitowoc Pilot, Wis., Thursday, June 6, 1901 pg. 1 ***** SUN'S RISE SEES A HAPPY MATING Popular Society Couple Start New Life With Birth of Day SECRECY AND QUIET. Miss Irene Bleser and Emil C. Sixta Steal March on Friends by Marriage at Daylight-Off For Trip. Another surprise ws perpetrated upon society circles of the city by the marriage, at an early hour this morning, of Miss Irene Bleser and Emil Sixta an event which while not unexpected had been unannounced to friends. The ceremony took place at 4:30 at St. Boniface church Rev. Peil being the celebrant and was witnessed by but five people all told, in addition to the principals. Miss Harriet Bleser and Dan Bleser Jr., sister and brother of the bride, respectively, were the attendants, the former having been hastily summoned from Kewaunee where she was visiting to officiate in that capacity, and arrived at a late hour last evening on the boat. The wedding was a profound secret not even the relatives of the contract-parties other than those of the immediate families, being aware of the fact. Miss Bleser, the bride's maid in bein summoned unexpectedly from Kewaunee had no intimation of the object of the message for the return to the city and was agreeably surprised to learn that instead of a death in the family the happy event of a marriage was on instead. After the wedding the couple intended to leave for Milwaukee at once, the ceremony being timed to conclude shortly before the early morning train's arrival. Fate, however, ruled otherwise and the train being an hour late, somewhat interfered with the plans to keep the marriage a secret until the couple had left the city. The smiling visages of the pair soon manifested to the depot attaches the fact that something of a character to warrant the suspicion of a wedding about to be performed or already taken place, was about to transprie. Knowing glances were directed in the direction of the party which consisted of the bride and groom and parents of the former who accompanied the two as far as Milwaukee and the secret thus leaked out. The newly made Mrs. Sixta is one of the most popular young ladies of the city and one who numbers her friends by the score. Attractions of both personal beauty and beauty of character are among the attributes that are responsible for this fact and she is well deserving of the happiness that will come to her in the advent into a new life. She has always made her home in this city, being the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Bleser, a family among the foremost in the city and is a graduate of the South Side High school. The groom is one of the rising business men of the city, being identified with many large business enterprises. He is the head of the newly incorporated Wisconsin Knitting Mills company, the Sixta Sons liquor company and has interests in others. Of genial good nature and possessed of manly qualifications he is amply deserving of the good fortune that brought him a bride of Miss Bleser's worth. He is a member of the local Elks organization. Many friends will wish the couple all the good fortune that is possible, a wish to which the Herald adds a second. After a visit at Milwaukee and Chicago the couple will proceed Eastward and take in points of interest at Buffalo, Niagara Falls and other places, and return to this city soon after, Mr. Sixta's business interst not permitting of a protracted absence. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, August 15, 1904 P. 1 ******** Emil Sixta and bride have returned from their honeymoon trip and will take up their abode and be at home to friends after October 1. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, August 22, 1904 P. 1

SKOEPOL: The following sent in by skocpol@buphy.bu.edu (With a name like SKOCPOL (pronounced "Skotch-pole"), I have learned to expect misspellings. My name is pseudo-Czech, and was created in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin between 1855 and 1874. The original name was SKOCDOPOLE, with a hacek ("hah-check") or small "v" above the c, to signal that it was pronounced like the ch in "ah-choo". The original name divides neatly into three words, pronounced "skuhtch--duh--puhl-yeh". They mean "jump into the field". My grandmother told me that my name had been shortened in Manitowoc County, before the Skocpol's (with a hacek) moved to Nebraska, where they gradually lost the hacek. So what do actual Wisconsin records show? The Manitowoc County "Index to Declarations of Intent" lists SCOCDPOLE, Anton, and SKOEPOL, Joseph. The Green Bay Area Research Center sent photocopies, along with a note about Anton saying "I don't know why the clerk wrote "SPRINGFIELD' at the top of the declaration. The signature is 'Anton SKOCDPOLE' in Gothic script." Knowing the Czech meaning, F.G. Olmsted, the Clerk who filled out the top apparently transformed Skocdopole into the German words SPRINGFELD (spring/jump, feld/field). Close examination shows that the clerk did write "feld". Even in old Gothic script, it is clear to me that Anton wrote SKOCDPOLE (with a hacek on the "c"). Thus the indexer misscopied the "k" as a "c", and Anton seems not to have included the "o" in "do". The Declaration of Intent for Joseph was in a different clerk's hand, and only partially filled out. In particular neither the clerk nor Joseph signed it. Contrary to the indexer, the top really said Joseph SKOCPOL (without a hacek). This was 1859, four years after Joseph had arrived in Wisconsin, but only a month after Anton got there. Anton's age was consistent with him being my previously unknown great-great-great grandfather. (sent in by researcher/see contributors page) See HOFFMANN

SKUBAL: Albert A notation regarding the "SENTA" family listed in the 1870 Federal Census for Mishicot. The census taker actually wrote "SCUBA" and poorly at that. This is the Albert Skubal family that arrived in Mishicot in 1867, and undoubtedly spoke very poor English by 1870. The family should be as follows: Albert Senta....Albert Skubal....55 Rosalie Senta...Rosalie Skubal...43 Joseph Senta....Joseph Skubal....16 Wenzel Senta....Wenzel Skubal....11 Antone Senta....Anton Skubal......7 Joseph Senta....Josephine Skubal..4 John Senta......John Skubal.......? (between 1 and 3. Born in the US after spring of 1867) The adults didn't know how old they were, and probably weren't to clear on the children's ages. My great-grandfather was Wenzel, who became James Skubal, and he never knew how old he was. Age wasn't a concern to Czechs. They didn't celebrate birthdays in Bohemia, but naming days. To get the actuals on the family, I had to write to the Czech Archives. (sent in by researcher/see contributors page.)

SMACKELS: Edward m: 04 Jun 1898 (co. mar. index v.6 p.457) to: Lucy Pahlkoetter ***** Married: At the home of the bride's parents, at high noon at Tuesday, June 4, 1898, by W. J. Wrieth, Circuit Court Commissioner, Mr. Edward Smackles of Valparaiso, Indiana and Miss Lucy Pahlkoetter of this city. The wedding was entirely a family affair but it was nevertheless a most pleasant and memorable occasion for those so deeply concerned. The bride is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. Pahlkoetter of this city, where she was born and reared. She is a handsome and amiable young lady and highly accomplished in all the feminine arts that endears a wife to the husband and makes her a treasure in the home. The Chronicle wishes for her and her husband, who is a young businessman of Valparaiso, Indiana, a long and happy life. Manitowoc County Chronicle, Tues., June 7, 1898 ***** Charging desertion and non-support Mrs. Lucy Smackels, of Two Rivers, was given a divorce from her husband Edward without contest on the part of the defense. The complaint in the case told a long story of neglect and marital woes. The couple were married at Two Rivers in 1898 and soon after removed to Valpariso, Ind., and later to Chicago. Smackels made a pretense of being a song writer and theatrical manager, but was a poor success according the recital of his wife. Since early last year the two have had no communication. There are two children and the mother will likely be given the custody. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Thursday, June 30, 1904 P. 1

Langworthy MARRIED: At the residence of E.J. Smalley, Esq., on Wednesday evening, Sept 15, by Rev. T.B. Dooley, Mr. Herschel V. Smalley, to Miss Agnes Langworthy. This happy occasion was witnessed by a large number of our citizens, and was one of the most brillian affairs which has ever been consummated in our village. The rooms of the spacious residence were handsomely decorated, and when Herschel led the beautiful and accomplishhed Miss Langworth beneath the arch of evergreens and flowers, to be joined in the holy bonds of matrimony, a silence impressive as befitted the occasion was maintained until the performance was over, when hearty congratulations poured in upon the happy couple. The gifts presented were numberous and elegant, and we are sure the best wishes of all went with them. By this marriage the young folks are robbed of one of the merriest of their number--but as he is in good hands, we won't complain, and can only wish him and his beauteous bride the fullest of happiness and enoyment this world can give. May their pathway ever be twrewn with Heaven's choicest blessings, and joys attend them during a long and happy life. "Hersch," farewell! Manitowoc Tribune Thursday, September 16, 1869 pg. 4 ***** SMALLEY GOLDEN WEDDING Herschel D. and Mrs. Smalley came back to the old home to celebrated their golden wedding. They were married here September 15, 1869 and celebrated the semi-centennary at the home of their son, John at Huron and Ninth Streets last Monday. There was a family reunion and open house all day. All afternoon and evening the folks came to pay their respects to the people whom Manitowoc could not forget while one remained who knew the ever genial "Hersch" and his faithful wife. Herschel came to Manitowoc, a lad in 1856 and went to the Civil War at the age of 16. He saw a lot of service and was a prisoner of war for eighteen months, most of which he spent in the big stone tobacco warehouse at Richmond, called Libby. This was a prison mainly for officers, who were usually older men then the enlisted men and the surviving Libby prisoners are getting mightily scarce. For years, Mr. Smalley was connected with the Smalley Manufacturing company founded by his father but left here twenty years ago and has made his home in Minnesota. Mrs. Smalley came to Manitowoc in 1865 with her father, John Langworthy and taught in the public schools up to her marriage in 1869. Four of their five children survive and the four were here. They are John of this city; Fred of Hillsdale, Wis., Mabel Atwood of Mpls and Fanny Griffith of Kansas City. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., Sept. 18, 1919 ***** In Prison. - Two young men who formerly were employees in the Pilot office, are now prisoners of war in Danville, Va. They are Herschall Smalley, of this village, and R.M.C. Freeman, of Menasha. From recent letters we learn that their treatment is far better than that which they received at Richmond. Mr. and Mrs. P.P. Smith celebrated their golden wedding on Saturday last. There is more than passing interest in this event to people of Manitowoc because of the relation both bear to the early history of the county. They came here children in the long ago. Mr. Smith having arrived in 1935, a lad of spirit, young and full of adventure. He was a close observer, studied people's peculiarities and is a storehouse of reminiscence unfortunately, almost the only one left in the city. He grew up with the straggling village with early impressions indelibly stamped upon his mind. Mrs. Smith was also a pioneer, a loving helpmeet to the man who is today a sturdy landmark of the early days. Had the fact of the golden anniversary been known in season there would have been a celebration of the event which would have been pleasing to the couple who still take interest, beyond that of most young people in matters affecting the city's prosperity. Manitowoc Pilot, Wis., Thursday, January 13, 1898 pg. 3 ***** Mr. and Mrs. Perry P. Smith will observe their 56th Wedding Anniversary on Mon. There was no party, but many of their friends dropped by to express their good wishes. Mr. Smith has lived in Manitowoc uninterruptedly since 1837. Der Nord Westen, 12 Jan. 1905 ***** Monday was the fifty-sixth anniversary of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Perry P. Smith. Mr. Smith has been a continuous resident of this city for sixty-eight years. He will be eighty-two years old next month. Manitowoc Pilot, Thursday, January 12, 1905 P. 5 ***** Mr. and Mrs. Perry P. Smith Celebraate Their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary A History of Manitowoc The Only Couple on Record There Have Lived FiftyYears Together in This County The early history of Manitowoc city and county is so intimately connected and associated with the lives of Perry P. Smith and his wife, Esther A. Champlin, that the celebration of their Golden Anniversary of their wedding in this city today becomes an event of more than ordinary local interest, as it is the first Golden Wedding recorded where the initial ceremony was held in this county. It is also a golden historical link as it were, connecting the matter of fact present with the legendary past, the days when the Winnebagos, the bravest of alll the still unconquered Dakotoes, roamed and hunted in the aboriginal forests and fished and trapped in the unsullied crystal lakes and rivers of this beautiful Manitowoc County. This community is not without its numerous old citizens who have seen kaleidoscopic changes so called improvements in this span of life; but the wreath of bay at this day and date belong to Perry P. Smith alone to recall the time when Manitowoc was a lonely settlement of four houses in course of erection of more or less doubtful completion. The story of the hardy pioneer is always interesting. Perry P. Smith was born in Victor, Ontario Co., New York, April 15, 1828 and emigrated to Chicago to live with his brother-in-law, Benjamin Jones and family. The style of traveling in those days was over land by team and this trip was made in the dead of winter. The party arrived at their destination February 17, 1836. On the 17th of July, 1837, Perry, a lad of fourteen years, arrived at Manitowoc in the schooner Oregon, still in the company with Mr. Jones who had in the meantime acquired from William Jones, his brother and one of the original owners of the town sites of Manitowoc, what was known as the Jones interest, having exchanged Chicago city property for Manitowoc holdings and considered that he had made a good trade. The first five years of the young pioneer's life in Manitowoc was one of hardship and toil, few pleasures and many disappointments. The time for starting new towns was unprosperous and Mr. Jones returned to Chicago leaving Mr. Smith in charge of his Manitowoc interests. The history of Manitowoc from 1837 to 1849 saw the building of the first vessel, the schooner Citizen in the year about 1840 by J. E. Edwards Sr., father of J. L. Edwards Jr., the latter still a resident of this city, who by the way was a boy about five years old when Mr. Smith came here. Mr. Smith was early prominent in ship building and vessel owning and bought first the schooner, Convoy and came hear having his prospects prematurely blasted by ?, a storm on Lake Michigan near Manistee in 1852. Afterward as a member of the firm of B. Jones and Co., he built the schooners Transit and El Tempo, fast sailing clippers who carried the honors for Manitowoc for many years as the ?? and fastest sailing craft of their class on the eastern chain of lake and gave this port its first prominence as a ship building point. During this period also the lumber interest came to the front and the first saw mill was built on a site on the south side of the river just below the Eighth Street bridge but it remained for Mr. Smith and his associates to build in 1858 the celebrated (at that time) Jones Mill on the bank of the river, present site of the Wisconsin Central Coal Docks. The new mill was one of the seven wonders for the people of Manitowoc and a modern mill in every respect, giving direct and indirect employment to ? Hunderd men with a cutting quantity of 50,000 feet in ten hours times. The supply of logs from the - illegible-- early stock of merchandise ever brought here was $554 worth of goods bought in Chicago by Mr. Smith in 18?? and shipped by schooner and opened up on a corner of what was known as the old warehouse on the river, foot of the North 6th Street. The good were bought on a credit. The venture was a success and a short time a new purchase of $1600 worth of goods was added to the stock. Afterward in 1847, a new store on Sixth Street between Commercial and York was built and this is the early history of merchandising in Manitowoc. During this period also and later Mr. Smith became the owner of considerable real estate. The present family residence on North Sixth Street came into his possession in 1845. In 1849 Manitowoc had grown to be a fine town of 700 or 800 people and had clearly out stripped its most formidable rival, "The Rapids" in the race for commercial supremacy and the doom of the latter place was forever sealed by the burning of the county buildings, the act of a crazy man and the consequent removal of the county seat to the Lake. From 1849 to 1860 Manitowoc was a city of great expectations and few realizations. A wonderful railroad scheme was projected to build a road from Manitowoc to the Mississippi River, but it never materalized sufficiently to be of any benefit except to temporarily boom the place and to ruin in the reaction, many local capitalists and investors. Mrs. Smith is hardly less of a pioneer than her husband. She landed at Manitowoc with her mother and family in October, 1848, coming from her native state Vermont, via Canal to Buffalo and propeller Independence, one of the first screw steamers that navigated the lakes to Manitowoc. Her father, Hiram H. Champlin Esq., had already preceded his family and had blazed the way for a new settlement of a saw mill adjoining lands of a thousand acres or more and the property was known for many years afterward as Champlin's Mills. Mrs. Smith and her sister, Mrs. Laura A.W. Morse are the only descendants of the Champlins living in the county at this writing. The wedding of Perry P. Smith and Esther A. Champlin on January 8, 1849 was characteristic of the principals and a very quiet, modest affair and took place at the bride's home, Champlin Mills, witnessed only by immediate numbers of personal friends. The ceremony was performed by Mr. J.H.W. Colby, County Judge, for as Mr. Smith expressed himself, "we were not bothered much with preachers those days." After the ceremony the happy couple went on their wedding journey, a trip to Kenosha, Wis., 110 miles in an open sleigh, returning to Manitowoc within a week and started housekeeping in their own comfortable home on the north side of Chicago Street between 7th and 8th. The manual life of Mr. and Mrs. Smith is well known and happily remembered by the older residents of Manitowoc. It need only be said that no family ever lived here that enjoyed more the respect and esteem of their friends and neighbors from all the walks of life. Three children were born of this union, all boys who have long since left the paternal hearth and whose faces now would hardly be recognized by any except the old timers, but who in the halycon days of '60 to '65 were regarded as pretty lively propositions on the streets of Manitowoc. H.C. Smith,, the eldest claims San Francisco for his home and has extensive business interests throughout California and the Republic of Mexico; A.R. Smith, has resided in Missouri for the past 29 years and is well and favorably known in connection with the wholesale dry goods trade of that city. Both of these gentlemen are here to attend the Golden wedding. Ira P. Smith, the youngest is one of the superintendents of the Territorial prison at Yuma, Arizona. All of the boys are married. The Golden Wedding is being celebrated this afternoon and evening by an entirely informal reception at their home to all their friends who care to call. No special invitations were sent out but the latch string is on the outside and a large concourse of neighbors and friends have availed themselves of the opportunity to congratulate the bride and groom of half a century. The well wishes are cordial and sincere and this happy event will long be remembered by the good people of Manitowoc. The HERALD happily joins the throng of congratulators and well wishes.
