STOEHR: Anton m: 15 May 1884 (co. mar. index v.5 p.191) to: Katie Meisnist ******** MISSING FOR YEARS. Anton Stoehr, of this County has Estate Left Him by his Mother EXECUTOR CAN'T FIND HIM. Unless Word is Received Soon, His Sons, George and Randolph will Get Property. Information of the whereabouts of Anton Stoehr, a former resident of Manitowoc, is wanted by the executor to the Mary Stoehr estate. Anton Stoehr, who was a machinist by trade was married about twenty years ago to a Miss Meisnest, whose parents resided at Cato, this county. About eight years after their marriage Mrs. Anton Stoehr died, leaving two children, George and Randlolph, aged six and two years respectively, who were taken charge of by the childrens' grand parents Meisnest. Shortly after the death of his wife Anton left for parts unknown, and since that time, which is twelve to fourteen years, but little information concerning his whereabouts has reached his relatives. About a year ago the surviving grandparent of the two Stoehr boys died, leaving each of them the sum of $400 in cash. Mrs. Stoehr also left a number of small bequests to friends and relatives, but the bulk of her property amounting to $500 in cash and a house and lot in the town of Cato, was left to her son Anton. After the absence of any person for seven years without any intelligence of his whereabouts being known by his relatives the law presumes that the absent person is dead and his property will go to his heirs by representation. If the fact can be clearly established in regard to Anton Stoehr his two children George and Randolph, who now reside in this county will come into that portion of the estate left to their father. Inquiry as to Anton Stoehr's whereabouts made by the exector of the estate has developed little information to show that Anton is living. It has been ascertained that after he left here he went to Peoria, Ill. A letter from August Seibold, a hotelman of that city states that Stoehr stopped at his hotel while there and that after leaving Peoria Stoehr went to Rockford, Ill., where he was in the employment of the Rock Island and Peoria R.R. This was over twelve years ago and the officials of the R.I. & P.R. Co. could shed no light on the case. From LaCrosse, Wis., word has been received that a man by the name of Anton Stoehr had worked in the Machine shops at that place about thirteen years ago. This is all that is known about the missing heir and unless definite information is received within a reasonable time the residue of the estate will go to his sons. Any information regarding the missing Anton Stoehr can be sent to Judge Choloupek, of this county. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Wednesday, May 13, 1903 P. 1

Stoelting, of Oconto, aged 75, died from the result of an automobile collision at Eighth street and New York avenue in this city Saturday evening. Dr. Stoelting, an uncle of Mrs. John Carey, was coming to the Carey home from Oconto to consult with physicians in attendance upon a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carey. Coming east on New York Avenue in a fog he apparently did not see the arterial stop sign at Eighth Street and crashed into a northbound car driven by James Morris. He got out, said he was unhurt and drove in his car to the Carey home two blocks away. When arriving there he collapsed and expired at 3 o'clock am. He had suffered no discernible physical injury. Dr. Stoelting was born in Sheboygan county in 1853. In 1880 he married Emma Teitgen, sister of Emil Teitgen of this city. He practiced at Kiel for a few years and since then for about 35 years at Oconto where he was a leading physician over a wide territory for many years. The funeral was held at Milwaukee yesterday. STOER: Joseph m: 18 Oct. 1877 (co. mar. index v.4 p.123) to: Maria Goetjen History of Stoer family dates back to 19th century TWO RIVERS- The history of the Stoer Dairy of rural Two Rivers dates back to just 1928, but the history of the family in the area dates back earlier than that. Joseph Stoer, an immigrant from Germany, purchased land from Xavier and Anna Blust in 1877. This land, along with 40 acres given to him and his wife, the former Mary Goedjen, as a wedding gift, constituted the establishment of Stoer Dairy Farms. The total acreage at this time was 112 acres. The couple had 11 children, with the youngest being Walter, who was known in the area as "Ike." Walter took over the family farm in 19233(sic) after marrying Viola Schmoock, according to a family history. Walter and his family realized after five years of selling milk from their 17 Guernsey cows that something had to be done to make additional money for the family. In 1933, Walter and Viola started their own route, selling milk by the pitcher. Later they purchased glass milk bottles to sell the product. The original dairy plant was built in 1936, before the time of Grade A regula- tions. Tank vats were used to pasteurize the milk, with all the heat coming from a coal boiler. The milk on the routes was sold as pasteurized. It was priced at 10 cents per quart. Eggs and cream products were added to their line of retail sales items. Walter saw an increased demand for his milk, so five cows were added to the herd. Not being able to keep up with the demand, the family history recorded the fact that the couple purchased additional milk from area farmers. Russell, the only child of the two, and his wife, the former Joyce Bohm, took over management of the operation in 1964. At that time, the Stoers expanded their herd to 64 cows. Due to the increase in milk and decrease in cream and butter sales, the herd was gradually changed over to the Holstein breed. Also in that year, an addition was made to the dairy plant. In 1966, the Stoers installed a pasteurization flash unit to increase efficiency in the dairy. The milk routes flourished and grew until 1973. With the rising costs, the era of home delivery was on the down-swing. Realizing this, the Stoers constructed a dairy store across from the plant and called it the "Stoer Dari Drive." The plant was increased in size in 1974, bringing it to its present size. In August of 1977, the last delivery on the retail milk route was made. Today, Russell and Joyce have a herd of 87 milk cows and a farm of 515 acres, in addition to renting another 150 acres. Other members of the family, employed part-time on the farm, in addition to John and Lors Theiss, are Russell and Joyce's sons Kris and Kevin. Herald Times Reporter, August 4, 1982 p.3

Photo compliments of the Manitowoc Library FORMER MAYOR STOLZE, DEAD Henry C. Stolze, four terms mayor of Manitowoc and for many years head of the Stolze Manufacturing Company of this city died at Los Angeles last Thursday morning. Mr. Stolze was 65 years of age and was born in Germany. He was born on December 8, 1859 and came to Manitowoc as a boy of nine years with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Stolze Sr., who for many years resided on a truck farm up river, known as the Stolze farm. In youth, Mr. Stolze took up the cudgel of his father and in controversy of the elder Stolze with railway companies and was embittered by his experiences to combat what he declared to be evils of the system. He identified himself with the old Populist party and later became active in the Socialist Party, at one time being the party nominee in Wisconsin for United States Senator. In 1905 Mr. Stolze became active in municipal affairs and as a candidate for mayor was elected as the first Socialist Mayor in Wisconsin. Little was accomplished in the first term of Mr. Stolze and he was defeated for re-election but continued the campaign inaugurated and in 1911 was again returned to office with sufficient backing in the council to carry out the programs for purchase of the water works plant and later on the electric light plant. Mr. Stolze retired from the office of mayor in 1917, declining to be a candidate for re-election, declaring that he had accomplished the aims which he believed for the benefit of the city. Later he disposed of his factory plant and located at Milwaukee where he made his home for a short time and then removed to California where he has been for the past six years. Mr. Stolze is survived by his wife and two sons, Dr. Henry Stolze and Dr. Engel Charles Stolze, both residents of Los Angeles. Three brothers, Andrew and Charles of Tacoma and Gustave of this city and four sisters, Mrs. Charles Selk and Miss Dora Stolze of this city, Mrs. Mary Kolas of Milwaukee and Mrs. Charles Kittleson of Keewaten, Minnesota also survive. The funeral was held at Los Angeles Monday. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., Feb. 19, 1925

Luckow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin (age 19 at marr.) p: Johann Kruger and Charlotte born Goldenbogen THE MIST OF YEARS Lifted, and the Scene of Quarter Of a Century Ago Is Recalled BY MR. AND MRS. STROTHOFF In Celebration of Silver Wedding Anniversary Sunday marked the twenty-fifth anniversay of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Strothoff and at their pleasant home, 913 South Twelfth street, the day was made one of great rejoicing. The mist of gathering years lifted from the past and out from the silent tomb of buried memories came that day when they stood together in a house on South Tenth street, exchanged the solemn vows and received the nuptial blessings at the hands of Rev. Thiele, at that time pastor of the Lutheran church. Surrounded by their children and loved ones, their minds traveled back o'er the rugged pathway, recalling the joys and sorrows of a quarter century and the days before the years had left their impression on the brow. Married Dec. 3, 1874, the couple at once took up their residence in the house prepared by the groom at 913 South Twelfth street, and have since resided there. Seven children came to bless the union, six of whom were present to assist in celebrating the silver wedding anniversary. They are William, Adelia, Amanda, Lizzie, Lillian and Martha. One child died in infancy and this has been the one real sorrow of the journey of married life to Mr. and Mrs. Strothoff. Over 75 guest participated in the festivities attendant upon the celebration of the anniversary and throughout the afternoon and evening, the home was the scene of merry making. Many and beautiful were the gifts presented, testifying the high esteem in which the bride and groom of a quarter century are held by a large circle of friends. The HERALD extends congratulations and the wish that Mr. and Mrs. Strothoff may have many more years of happiness. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, December 4, 1899 P.1STRODTHOFF: John

Catholic Priest of Francis Creek. It is the wish of their many friends that the midday and evening of their maried life may be as bright as the morning began. We understand on good authority that one of the Kewaunee "fair ones" has captured one of our Franklin well to do young men. As soon as the marriage is consumated we will join with their many friends in a hearty congratulation and give them a "send off" in the Lake Shore Times. SWEENEY: John Steele Jr. p: John steele Sweeney/Alice Monon m: 16 Aug 1905 (co. mar. index v.7 p.398) to: Grace Leigh Hamilton p: James Edward Hamilton/Etta Shore Hamilton-Sweeney At the home of the bride's parents in the city of Two Rivers, August 16, 1905, Grace Leigh Hamilton and Dr. John Steele Sweeney of Chicago In the glory of the sunset at the end of a perfect day, with radiant skies above her and smiling friends around her, Grace Leigh Hamilton, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Edward Hamilton was united in marriage to Dr. John Steele Sweeney. The ceremony that cemented the twain for life took place on a little gem of a stage with green settings and floral decorations, at the bottom of the terraced garden that surrounds the imposing Hamilton mansion. The state was crescent shaped and located in the walk that leads down to the river from the east entrance. On the green terraces above, the guests were grouped. The walk was covered with white canvas and broads white ribbons (silken barriers) guarded it on either side from encroachment and guided the bridal party to the little state on which the officiating clergyman awaited them. At the right and left of the state the relatives of the bridal couple ranged themselves to witness the climax and closing scenes in Love's melo-drama. The orchestra was placed near the steps at the east entrance which the wedding party came forth and from which the wedding march began. The wedding march was a most interesting and impressive scene, a drifting down to the plighting place to the strains of music soft and low, sweet and solemn. First came two ushers, Mr. Carl Volrath of Sheboygan and Dr. J.J. Andrews of Chicago. About twenty feel behind followed the brother of the groom, Mr. E.S. Sweeney of Paris, Kentucky and G.S. Hamilton, the brother of the bride. Their function was also that of ushers. The ushers marched arm-in-arm but the bridesmaids and maid of honor walked singly, each maintaining a distance of about 20 feet from the other and last of all came the bride-to-be on the arm of her father. The procession was so impressive that tears were seen to glisten on smiling faces, as is often the case when the tender emotions are most deeply moved. The first bridesmaid was Miss Margaret Sweeney, a sister of the groom and she carried with her, as she moved down the descending path to the slow measured music of the orchestra, an armful of blossoms with which to shower the bride. The second bridesmaid was Miss Pritchard of Manitowoc. She also cried an armful of flowers to be strewn along the bridal pathway. Miss Irma Schuette of Manitowoc followed the bridesmaids and preceded the bride as her maid of honor. So stately and so graceful was the movement of these maidens toward the altar erected to Hyman,, so soft and low and entrancing the music that it almost seemed as though they were but fairy phantoms and the scene a product of dreamland. The bride was gowned in white. The terms used to describe materials and styles of gowns are not familiar terms with the writer but he confesses to being impressed with the simplicity and exquisite taste of her attire and with the becoming modesty in which she was led by her father to the spot where the expectant groom would meet her. On the little stage, the officiating clergyman, the father and uncle of the groom awaited the coming of the groom and his brother, W.E. Sweeney of Buffalo, Wyo., who acted as best man,, appeared from a side entrance and took position by the side of the bride and her father and the wedding ceremony began. The wedding ceremony was something unique, original and impressive. There was not a particle of ritualistic formalities in any portion and yet it was so simple, so appropriate and so deeply devotional that all present agreed that they had never heard or witnessed a more admirable or more impressive wedding ceremony. The ceremony was the conception and largely the impromptu effort of Rev. John Steele Sweeney Sr. of Paris, Kentucky, the venerable and honored father of the groom. The blessing of God was invoked by Rev. Z.T. Sweeney, an uncle of the groom. In beginning the marriage ceremony, Rev. John Steele Sweeney said, "The first wedding on earth was like this, in the open air, under the canopy of cloudless skies. God gave the bride away at the wedding ?" The response of the bride's father was "I give the bride away". The officiating clergyman then said that custom did not demand that the groom be given away but he would take the liberty of doing so. The son he was about to give away in marriage, from boyhood to manhood, had proven an honor and a comfort to him. He had never by action or word caused him a moment of sadness or regret. And the handsome, honest face of the groom was simple confirmation of the fond father's commendation. At the close of the interesting and impressive ceremony, the wedded couple remained upon the state and received the congratulations of the assembled guests. To the right of them stood the father and mother of the bride and to their left the father and mother of the groom and of course, the congratulations were passed along the happy line. Before the congratulations were concluded the gloaming had begun and the guests were invited to reenter the house where the wedding dinner was waiting to be served. This was prepared and served by an experienced caterer from Milwaukee. The decorations of garden, veranda and interior were beautiful and in most excellent taste, as indeed, was every detail of the wedding. There was a careful avoidance of everything suggestive of display but there was nothing lacking. The decoration and the dinner were artistic creations. Simplicity, yet exquisite taste, was the rule throughout. The young couple were the recipients of a large number of beautiful and costly presents. Indeed the large billiard room of the Hamilton family residence was not too large for their display. A list of the articles received would be too long for publication, besides it is not the desire of either the donor or the receivers to have them published. But those who saw them not only wondered at their beauty but also wondered what the bride and groom would do with them all. At 9 o'clock the young couple took their departure. It was announced that they were to take the Ashland Limited at Manitowoc and a crowd of the wedding guests took the street cars for the Manitowoc depot to give them a shower of rice as they started on their wedding trip. But a special trip had been quietly provided for their departure from the Two Rivers depot and arrangements made for them to get on board the Ashland Limited at the junction just west of Manitowoc. So the crowd waited for them at the Manitowoc depot had rice to cook. They are now taking a tour of the Lakes. The groom is a physician who has already established himself in the city of Chicago. He is very genial and capable young an and will no doubt, make a loyal and devoted husband. He certainly finds no difficulty in making friends. The bride is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Hamilton. She was born and reared in Two Rivers and is an amiable and accomplished young lady. list of guests follows-- Two Rivers Chronicle, Tues., Aug. 22, 1905

SZCZEPANSKI: Stephan m: 10 May 1897 (co. mar. index v.6 p.402) to: Catharina Kadow NEWTON WOMAN SHOT BY HUSBAND Gets Bullet That Was Intended for Her Father Who Sought to Protect Her RECALLS OLD TROUBLE Mrs. Stephen Sczepanski Slightly Wounded This morning – Details of Story of Family Trouble Wounded in the shoulder by a bullet intended for her father who had interfered in a family dispute, Mrs. Stephen Sczepanski Jr., of Newton was brought here and her husband is now in custody on a charge of attempted assault with intent to murder. Mrs. Sczepanski's injuries are not serious. Sczepanski was arrested by Sheriff Pellett while making an effort to escape disguised in women's clothing. The trouble occurred in Newton this morning and resulted over the attempt of Sczepanski to force his wife to join him in removing to Milwaukee. Stephen Kadow, father of Mrs. Sczepanski interfered to aid his daughter and the angered husband drew the revolver and fired a shot, aimed at the aged man, but which struck his wife. Sczepanski dressed himself in woman's apparel and sought to make his escape but was taken by Sheriff Pellet who had been summoned. Sczepanski and his wife have had trouble before. Mrs. Sczepanski was recently returned from the Oshkosh asylum and her parents objected to her again living with her husband, who having determined to remove to Milwaukee insisted that she accompany him. This led to the fray of today. Mrs. Sczepanski is a cousin of John and Wenzel Kadow of this city. Manitowoc Daily Herald - Tues., Nov. 8, 1904
SZCZEPANSKI: (Divorce - 1899) Szczepanski, Stephan, vs. Szczepanski, Catherine Married 10 May 1897 in the County of Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Defendant deserted plaintiff. Defendant sued for divorce in 1897, but divorce not granted. No children. ******** AGED FARMER'S WOES. Newton Man Sues Sheriff Henry Lehrmann and Deputy Thos. McCarty FOR $177 ON WRIT OF REPLEVY Son's Marriage Leads to Trouble In the Family and Old Man Stands by His Off-Spring--Case is of Long Standing. Sheriff Henry Lehrmann and his deputy Thomas McCarty are defendants in an interesting case on trial in municipal court to- day (sic). Isczepan Szczepanski, an aged farmer at Newton, is the plaintiff and the suit results from a replevy action involving $177. The troube dates back nearly two years and Stephen Szczepanski, a son of the plaintiff is responsible for the old man's woes. Stephen was married some years ago and family dicord led the wife to institute proceedings for divorce. The husband contested the action and Judge Gilson, presiding at that time, denied the complaint, allowing, however, the costs of the action, taxed against the defendant. A judgment was given for the amount, some $60 or $70 and Schmitz & Burke, who appeared for Mrs. Szezepanski, issued an execution, which was delivered to Deputy McCarty for service, Nov. 30, 1899. The officer proceeded to Newton, but when he attempted to serve his papers and levy on the property, he encountered trouble. Stephen put up a fight for the chattels and his father and mother joined in. The deputy was prodded with pitchforks and was given his money's worth in defiance of the law on the part of the Sczepanski family. After summoning assistance, however, he succeeded in carrying away considerable grain to satisfy the execution. Szczepanski, Sr., drove to town with all due haste and instituted an action replevying the goods; claiming that the grain was his property and that he had so informed the officer. Sheriff Lebrmann was hunting in the north at the time and being a party to the action, his deputy having served the papers, it was impossible to hear the case at that time an adjournment was taken. The defense claims that the property belonged to the son and will endeavor to establish this. Schmitz & Burke appear for the defense and Attorney C. Gonski, of Millwaukee, is in the case for Szczepanski. A number of witnesses were sworn this morning, but it is not thought the case will be completed to-day (sic). Szczepanski, Sr., is a man of 70 years of age and he presented a picturesque appearance when he came into court this morning. He was bundled in three overcoats; his hair was matted and the gray beard extending to the eyes and completely covering the face gave him a very uncouth appearance. He is unable to speak a word of English and it was necessary to employ an interpreter. In answering the questions of attorneys the plaintiff did so in an emphatic manner and exhibited a spirit of dogged determination to win at any cost. His wife was in court also. The outcome of the case is watched with interest by attorneys. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, March 5, 1900 P.1
