this city and Michael Sabel of Franklin were wedded in the city and Emma Hessel
and Lucas Herman at Francis Creek.
The Cizek-Sabel wedding was celebrated at the Clipper hotel with only a small party
of relatives present, Judge Chloupek officiating. The bridal couple departed for Chicago
for a wedding trip. Mr. Sabel is a cheese maker of the county, located at Branch where

MARRIED
In this place on the 3d inst. at the residence of the bride's father, by the
Rev. W. J. Stoutenburgh, Mr. Chas. H. Sabin and Miss Maggie W.
Burnett, all of Manitowoc.
Charley we are glad to welcome you to the ranks of married men. When
we saw you inscribe your name on the enlistment roll of the 32d Regiment
we considered you sensible to the last degree; but that was to fight; you
have now enlisted for life--a life of peace--and we think you are sensible
still. We hope that the Piece you have will be peace personified and that
you, having learned the arts of war, will now worship the said Piece, and
prove the truthfulness of the old maxim that "only the brave deserve the
fair" by courageously meeting all the ills of life, and extracting from the
sweets around you contentment and unalloyed pleasure.
"If solid happiness we prize,
Within our breast this jewel lies,
And they are fools who roam:
The world has nothing to bestow;
From our own selves our joys must flow,
And that dear hut--our home."

MRS. HENRY SANDFORD of this city died at 12:30 p.m., April 27 at Madison whither
she had gone the Monday preceding with her husband. She had been ailing for some
time but no one anticipated so early a fatal termination.
She was born in London, England, May 4, 1840 and came to this country when eight
years old. She was married July 18, 1864 and came with her family to this city in
1880. It was in the domestic circle that Mrs. Sandford’s good qualities were best
shown. There never was a kinder mother or a more devoted wife. The mutual affection
existing between her and her family had an intensity which makes their sorrow
particularly poignant.

In those days I don't think it mattered very much.
Some of the children kept the Miller spelling and some changed to Mueller.")

*****
Schallern-Easton-At the St. James Episcopal church in this city on Monday, June 23,
by Rev. M.V. Averill. Mr. Bruno Schallern and Miss Lizzie Easton, all of Manitowoc, Wis.
The contracting parties are well and favorably known in this city and it is safe to say few
persons receive more heartfelt congratulations on the consummatirn (sic) of so important
an event in their lives. Mr. Schallern is not only a promising young business man, but he
also has the deserved reputation of being a man possessed of superior talents. Miss Easton
has long enjoyed the respect of all who know her, and she is in every way worthy the man
whose love she has won. We hope the young couple will find life's pathway bright with prosperity.
Manitowoc Pilot, June 26, 1879 P. 3
*****
A very pleasant event of the past week was the marriage of Mr. Bruno
Schallern and Miss Isadore Easton, which occurred at St. James Episcopal
Church last Monday morning. The ceremony was performed by Rev. M.V.
Averill, rector of said church, assisted by Rev. Jos. DeForest of Lacrosse.
The church was very nicely decorated, directly over the head of the bride
and groom a floral horseshoe was suspended in the center of which were the
initials "S.E." At 10:30 the bridal party entered the church, the bride leaning
on the arm of her father, the groom following with the mother of the bride
headed by ushers Messrs. "Ed" Nash and Charles Bressler. During the
ceremony, Miss Ida Patchen played Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" after
which the happy pair boarded the noon train for Ripon, Wis. A large number
of handsome presents were made the happy pair.

Regina, Julia and Anton
This is a photo of Regina Adolph with her two youngest children
Julia (who married John Scharenbroch) and Anton. The photo dates
from late 1875 or early 1876.
Following is a quote from a genealogy written by Janice North of
Bloomington, Minnesota.
"Regina was married to Christian Adolph on 8 July 1858 by Rev. Ambrose
Oschwald of St. Nazianz Catholic Church at St. Nazianz, Wisconsin with
Christ's brother, Peter Adolph, and Johann Trachessen (Trageser) as
witnesses. Christ was born about 1829 in Prussia to Reinerius and
Margaret Adolph. He and Regina made their home on the northeast quarter
of section #13 in Meeme township next to his brother, Peter's home. Here
were born their eight children: Catherine, Peter, John, Anna, Christian,
Mary, Julia, and Anton. The property remained in the Adolph family until
1943 when Anton died."

WEDDED A HALF CENTURY TODAY
Scherer Home on South Eleventh St. Scene of Joyous Gathering
WEDDED IN THIS CITY 1856
Couple Removed to New York But Returned Here After Few Months
and Have Continued Residents.
Today completes a half century of wedded life for Mr. and Mrs. Henry Scherer, Sr.,
pioneer residents of the city and in commemoration of the event the family home at
1210 South Eleventh street is the scene of a joyous celebration n which children,
grand children, neighbors and friends are assembled to tender congratulations and
gladden the heart of the aged pair with assurance of the love and esteem which is
entertained for them. During the day Mr. and Mrs. Scherer exchanged the vows
which they spoke fifty years ago and the service was one of the pretty and impressive
feature of the occasion.
A family reunion was the only celebration that had been planned by Mr. and Mrs. Scherer
in honor of the event but neighbors and friends came in large number to make the anniversary
a notable one. The marriage of the couple, August 15, 1856, was celebrated in this city where
the families of the two had resided for only a short time. Mrs. Scherer's maiden name having
been Fredericka Stueck. After the marriage the couple removed to New York, intending to
make their home there, but remained only a few months and then returned to Manitowoc
where they have since been continuous residents.
Long residence in the city has given Mr. and Mrs. Scherer a wide acquaintance and they
are blessed with a large circle of friends who unite in well wishes on the occasion (sic) of
the golden wedding day. For years Mr. Scherer was engaged in the shoe business and
even at this time follows that trade. Though advanced in years, both Mr. Scherer and his
wife enjoy excellent health and in welcoming their guests, renewed the youth of their
marriage day. Five children blessed the union of the couple, being Henry, Jr., William
and Edward of this city, Mrs. Dora West and Mrs. Elizabeth Miller, of Milwaukee and
they are present for the celebration of the day.
There was nothing elaborate about the anniversary celebration but it was a joyous one
and the aged couple were made to feel that they possess the greatest treasures which life
affords-dutiful and loving children and the sincere friendship of a host of friends. During
the afternoon "open house" was held and this evening there will be another gathering.
The couple was remembered with many gifts.

Yesterday Mr.and Mrs. Joseph Scheuer of that portion of the town of
Mishicot known as "School Section" celebrated their golden wedding, they
having been united in marriage fifty years ago in St. Luke's Church,
this city and yesterday, in the same sanctuary, they repeated and
renewed the vows then plighted. Mrs. Scherer's maiden name was Catherine
Geip. The ceremony was solemnized by Rev. Father Geissler who for
nearly 20 years has been their beloved pastor. The celebration of their
golden wedding took place out upon the farm which their labor developed
from the primeval forests. Five sons were born to them, all of whom are
living and all were present to help celebrate the glad anniversary,
together with grandchildren, relatives and old neighbors and friends. It
was a very pleasant affair for all present. Mr. and Mrs. Scheuer are
well known old settlers and are held in high esteem by all who know them
and the Chronicle takes the liberty of tendering them its sincere

Schill-Schneider.-Mr. Frank Schill and Miss Mary Schneider, by the Rev
Father Th. A. Brubin, at the Catholic church of St. Wendelin (sic), town
of Cenreville (sic) July 31st, 1877.
The happy occasion was one of so much interest that I cannot forego
giving the readers of the Pilot a short description of it.
Both parties were numbered among the foremost of our young people, and
command the respect and good will of all who know them, coming from
highly respected families in our town. The bridegroom is the only son of
Mr. Nicolaus Schill, on the Union road, and bride is the oldest daughter
of our well-known chairman, Mr. Dominic Schneider.
At nine o'clock a.m. the invited guests assembled at the residence of
the bridegroom, and formed in procession to the church, some three miles
distant. More than thirty vehicles, headed by the celebrated band of Mr.
Chas. Riek, made up the long train. On the approach to the church the
bells began to chime, and as the bridegroom, aided by Messrs. Joseph
Schneider and M. Pfeifer and followed by the bride with Misses Louisa
Schneider and Mary Schill as bride maids, stepped up to the Sanctuary,
the church organ struck up the lively air of "Marriage Bells." The
ceremony was performed according to the impressive rites of the Catholic
church, and a union of two hearts was blessed, not to be severed until
death. The usual High Mass was then celebrated by the Rev. Burhin, the
choir singing the beautiful Peter's Mass in "D." The duet "Et in
Carnatus" was most enchantingly rendered by Mrs. Albers as first soprano
and Miss Anna Priester as alto. Indeed, I rarely found a better trained
choir anywhere than we have here. After High Mass the pastor preached to
the assembled congregation from the gospel of the Lord's presence at the
wedding of Cana. (Perhaps some Christian readers do not like this
particular gospel.) In the course of his discourse he pointed out the
six main virtues necessary for a Christian family to insure lasting
happiness, comparing them with the six jars filled with the mystic wine.
After the usual congratulation, the party went back to Mr. Schill's
residence, where, in the meantime, quite a transformation had taken
place. Wreaths of green and flowers spanned the road in several places,
and the house appeared inside like a large hotel about dinner time, the
tables being laden with substantial as well as dainty viands in
abundance. Allow me now to throw the veil of silence over the scene, for
you may know what happened-everybody caring for the inner man.
Soon we heard the Band strike up some lively airs, and found a large
party already engaged in tripping the fantastic toe. A large dancing
floor was prepared for that amusement. Every eye beamed with joy, and as
the company was a select one, on restraint manifested itself in the
search of amusement. Papa Dominicus "smiled his sweetest smiles" (whew!)
while he, with many of the guests, wet their whistles in one corner of
the establishment with "Scheide's Gambriniants." Among the many guests
from abroad we noticed especially Mr.T.G. Olmsted, of the Pilot, and his
accomplished sister; also Mr. John Franz and wife-(John dancing with all
the good looking girls of the party), and Mr. J.L. Miller and wife, of
the Miller H??? Manitowoc. The enjoyments were (unreadable) disperse,
long to remember this happy occasion. May the choicest blessings of
Heaven be the lot of the young couple, and may they live to see their
descendants to the third and fourth generation is the wish of - Summer
Boxer.
