SCHMIDT: Fredrick m: 25 Nov. 1866 (co. mar. index v.3 p.72) to: Wilhelmina Hormann GOLDEN WEDDING SURPRISE Mr. and Mrs. Frederich Schmidt enjoyed an unexpected celebration of their golden wedding anniversary, Saturday,, when many of their relatives came and surprised them at their cozy little home on 17th Street. They were married fifty years ago in the old brown Lutheran Church and Pastor Brown, one of the first ministers for St. John's Congregation here, officiated. They admit that they are getting old now and the silver threads are multiplying but they still feel strong and healthy, she is 73 and he is 80. They came to Two Rivers in war time in 1862. He worked on a farm and when the time came for the wedding he had a comfortable home ready on the farm. While yet on the farm, they took into their home as their own, a little girl who grew to womanhood under their care and is now Mrs. Fischer of Appleton. She was among those present at the celebration as their only child. For the past ten years, Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt have made their home in this city beloved by their neighbors as a kind hearted and genial couple. Saturday evening a number of young people gathered and gave the aged couple an old fashioned charvari. The Reporter, Fri., Dec. 1, 1916

EX-SHERRIFF(sic) HENRY SCHMIDT AND WIFE WEDDED 50 YEARS Pioneer Couple to Celebrate Golden Wedding Anniversary Quietly Tomorrow Wedded fifty years ago tomorrow, on Jan. 7, 1869, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schmidt, pioneer residents of the city, will observe their golden wedding anniversary in the residence which has been their home during the entire half century, the house in which Mrs. Schmidt lived as a girl and which was built by her father, the late John F. Zinns, sixty years ago. The home is on the corner of 7th and Jay streets. No formal celebration of the wedding anniversary has been planned, but Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt will receive their friends and the day will be a memorable one in the lives of the two. Children of the couple will be present together with three grandsons for a family reunion. Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt are among the best known pioneer residents of the city and county. Mr. Schmidt, who was born in Germany, Feb. 20, 1840, came to America in 1857 and settled in Kossuth where he was employed by the late August Schuette, father of Postmaster H.C. Schuette for some years. When the Civil war broke out Mr. Schmidt volunteered with Company B, 9th Wis., Inf. on Sept. 23, 1861 at the age of 20 and served three and a half years under Gen. Franz Siegel. Mr. Schmidt was wounded in action. After the war he was employed at Little Rock, Ark., with the late Capt. Blockl, of Sheboygan, in management of a large plantation and later returned to Manitowoc where he engaged in business, in operating a soda water factory and the Roeff's brewery. Later he engaged in the livery business in this city which he conducted for many years on site of the present postoffice building. During the time he was engaged in the livery business Mr. Schmidt's conveyances carried approximately 5,600 persons to their last resting places in this and adjacent counties. Mr. Schmidt served as a member of the county board and was twice elected sheriff of the county, on his second election taking office on his wedding anniversary, Jan. 7, 1894. He has served as commander of Walker Post G.A.R. for ten years, having been reelected for the present year to be installed Jan. 8. Mr. Schmidt has been prominent in political circles and the G.A.R. of the state. Mrs. Schmidt, nee Julia Zinns, who is four years the junior of her husband, having been born May 28, 1844, at New York, came to Manitowoc with her parents in 1848, locating in the town of Meeme. She is one of the county's early day school teachers and took a prominent part in music and theatricals of early days, being an accomplished musician and singer. In pioneer days many public entertainers were given and Mrs. Schmidt participated. Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt were parents of seven children, two of whom died in infancy. Those surviving are Judge Albert H. Schmidt, Mrs. F.C. Borcherdt, Jr., Mrs. Orville Stinson, Miss Mathilda Schmidt, this city, and William E. Schmidt of Portland, Ore. The latter may be unable to be here for the anniversary tomorrow. Congratulations will be tendered Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt by a large circle of friends and the community will join in the home that they may be spared to observe many more anniversaries of their union. Manitowoc County Chronicle - Dec. 8, 1891 ***** Msgr. Schorn Dies; Funeral at Oshkosh The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Louis M. Schorn, 81, who had resided at St. Mary Home, Manitowoc, since his retirement from the priesthood, died Saturday morning at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, where he had been a patient one day. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Vincent Church, Oshkosh, his first parish as a priest and his last before retirement. Bishop Aloysus Wycislo of the Green Bay Diocese will celebrate the funeral Mass and burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Oshkosh. Militiary graveside rites will be accorded him. Msgr. Schorn was a native of Two Rivers, born Dec. 5, 1892, the son of the late Jacob and Pravedis Monka Schorn. He studied at St. Lawrence College, Mt. Calvary, and St. Francis Semminary, Milwaukee, and was ordained Oct. 14, 1916, at the Cathedral, Green Bay. His first assignment as an assistant was to St. Vincent, Oshkosh, for two years. He was then assigned to a parish in Crandon for a short time before entering the Army in 1918 during World War I as a chaplain with the Fifth Infantry Division in France. Returning from service, Msgr. Schorn was assigned to St. Mary Church, Custer Wis., and in 1923 went to St. Augustine Church in Wausaukee. In 1939 he came to Manitowoc to be pastor of Sacred Heart Church, where he served until 1954 when he returned to St. Vincent's, Oshosh (sic). He served in the priesthood for 52 years before his retirement in 1968 when he came to St. Mary Home, Manitowoc. He was elevated to the rank of domestic prelate with the rank of right reverend monsignor in 1958. This is an honorary rank conferred by the Holy See and because of rank he occupied a position of honor at liturgical functions and in processions. (photo) When he marked his 50 years in the priesthood his golden jubilee celebration was attended by many Manitowoc area friends. Through the years he served as pro-syndical judge with the diocesan matrimonial tribunal and in 1927 served as state chaplian of the American Legion and for 10 years as its state poppy chairman. He had also been head of the Oshkosh deanery. While in Manitowoc he served on the Selective Service Board and had been active in the American Legion and Knights of Columbus. He now belonged to the Oshkosh K.C. Council. He also belonged to the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin. He had been active in civic affairs while in Manitowoc. He had been on HFH's Nursing School Advisory Board, and had been post commander of the Drews-Bleser American Legion Post. During his 15 years as pastor of Sacred Heart, he supervised many improvements including addition of six classrooms to the school and enlarging the convent of the nuns. Survivors are two sisters, Mrs. W.C. Oetinger of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Ben C. Kaster of Green Bay and nieces and nephews. The body will be in state at St. Vincent Church, Oshkosh, from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and there will be a prayer service there at 7:30 p.m. Herald Times Reporter, Saturday, December 22, 1973 P.2 (SCHORN, LOUIS Dec 05 1892/Dec 1973/SSDI)
